The therapeutic value of antibiotics depends on the susceptibility of the infecting microorganism and the pharmacological
profile of the drugs. To assess the value of an antibiotic combination of polymyxin B and miconazole this study examined the
in vitro synergistic potential of the two drugs on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and yeast. Antifungal and antibacterial
activity was tested by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of broth macrodilution and urea broth microdilution, by fluorescence
microscopy and flow cytometry. Synergism was calculated using the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICi). With Staphylococcus intermedius as target we found up to an eightfold reduction of the individual MICs when both drugs were combined. However, the FICi was
0.63 suggesting no real interaction between the two drugs. With Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Malassezia pachydermatis as targets the antimicrobial drug combination reduced the MICs of polymyxin B and miconazole from fourfold to hundredfold
resulting in FICi between 0.06 and 0.5 which defines a synergistic action. Thus, if polymyxin B and miconazole are combined
their effect is greater than the sum of the effects observed with polymyxin B and miconazole independently, revealing bactericidal
and fungicidal synergism. Our results indicate a strong therapeutic value for the combination of these antimicrobial agents
against Gram-negative bacteria and yeast and a weaker value against Gram positive bacteria for clinical situations where these

Early food regimes literature tended to concentrate on the global scale analysis of implicitly negative trends in global food
relations. In recent years, early food regimes authors like Harriet Friedmann and Philip McMichael have begun to consider
the sites of resistance, difference and opportunity that have been emerging around, and into contestation with, new food regime
relations. This paper examines the emerging global-scale governance mechanism of environmental food auditing—particularly
those being promoted by supermarkets and other large food retailers—as an important new dynamic in our understanding of the
politics and potentials of food regimes. Commencing with an examination of Friedmann’s corporate environmental food regime,
two key dynamics are identified as being pivotal in the rise and decline of global-scale regimes: securing social legitimacy
for food relations and the importance of ecological dynamics in global food relations. By extending McMichael’s notion of
‘Food from Nowhere’ versus ‘Food from Somewhere’, the paper interrogates the emergence of a cluster of relations that comprise
‘Food from Somewhere’ and examines whether this cluster of relations has the potential to change some of the constituent ecological
dynamics of food regimes. These ecological dynamics have historically been problematic, amply demonstrating Marx’s metabolic
rift as the early food regimes solidified relationships between ‘ecologies at a distance’. By using socio-ecological resilience
theory, ‘Food from Somewhere’ is characterized as having denser ecological feedbacks and a more complex information flow in
comparison to the invisibility and distanciation characterizing earlier regimes as well as contemporary ‘Food from Nowhere’.
The conclusion of this article is that while ‘Food from Somewhere’ does provide one site of opportunity for changing some
key food relations and ecologies, the social legitimacy of this new form of food relations does rely on the ongoing existence
of the opposite, more regressive, pole of world food relations. The key question for resolving this tension appears to be
whether new food relations can open up spaces for future, more ecologically connected, global-scale food relations. 相似文献

Little is known about the extent of work-related accidents occurring during the performance of forestry work by the non-industrial private forest owner or their assistant (hereafter called self-employed NIPF). The absence of an effective accident registration system largely excludes this group from accurate representation in official statistics. In this study, data from 1996 to 2001 were collected from hospital injury records managed by the Umeå Accident Analysis Group at the University Hospital in Umeå. During that period, it was found that 485 persons in the Umeå region were given medical attention due to injuries possibly acquired during self-employed forestry work. Questionnaires about the accidents were sent to each of the 485 injured persons and 80% were returned. Responses revealed that 225 of the respondents were injured during self-employed forestry work. Out of these, 81% performed fewer than 31 days of forestry work annually. Due to the injury, 29% had been on sick leave for some period of time and 42% had persistent symptoms. On average, each injury led to 13 days of sick leave and 24 hours of institutional care. Firewood production was shown to be a key factor behind the large number of accidents for self-employed NIPF. Further studies on the lack of knowledge about how the work should be done and conscious risk taking should be considered as an important link to the development of effective accident prevention strategies. 相似文献

Purpose
Remediation of metal contaminated soil with biochar is attracting extensive interest in recent years. Understanding the significance of variable biochar properties and soil types helps elucidating the meticulous roles of biochar in immobilizing/mobilizing metals/metalloids in contaminated soils.Materials and methods
Six biochars were produced from widely available agricultural wastes (i.e., soybean stover, peanut shells and pine needles) at two pyrolysis temperatures of 300 and 700 °C, respectively. The Pb-, Cu-, and Sb-contaminated shooting range soils and Pb-, Zn-, and As-contaminated agricultural soils were amended with the produced biochars. The mobility of metals/metalloids was assessed by the standard batch leaching test, principal component analysis and speciation modeling.Results and discussion
The changes in soil properties were correlated to feedstock types and pyrolysis temperatures of biochars based on the principal component analysis. Biochars produced at 300 °C were more efficient in decreasing Pb and Cu mobility (>93 %) in alkaline shooting range soil via surface complexation with carboxyl groups and Fe-/Al-minerals of biochars as well as metal-phosphates precipitation. By contrast, biochars produced at 700 °C outperformed their counterparts in decreasing Pb and Zn mobility (100 %) in acidic agricultural soil by metal-hydroxides precipitation due to biochar-induced pH increase. However, Sb and As mobility in both soils was unfavorably increased by biochar amendment, possibly due to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion and competition with phosphate.Conclusions
It is noteworthy that the application of biochars is not equally effective in immobilizing metals or mobilizing metalloids in different soils. We should apply biochar to multi-metal contaminated soil with great caution and tailor biochar production for achieving desired outcome and avoiding adverse impact on soil ecosystem.985.

I explore the role of nature in the agrifood system and how attempts to fit food production into a large-scale manufacturing
model has lead to widespread outbreaks of food borne illness. I illustrate how industrial processing of leafy greens is related
to the outbreak of E. coli 0157:H7 associated with spinach in the fall of 2006. I also use this example to show how industry attempts to create the
illusion of control while failing to address weaknesses in current processing systems. The leafy greens industry has focused
efforts on sterilizing the growing environment and adopting new technologies, while neglecting to change the concentrated
structure of processing systems. Repeated breakdowns in these systems illustrate a widening fault line between attempted and
failed control of nature in industrial food production.

Diploid wheat (Triticum monococcum L, AmAm) is an ideal material for induced mutations which can be easily characterized and transferred to polyploid wheats. The EMS-induced brittle culm mutants, brc1, brc2, and brc3 used in the present investigation, were isolated from T. monococcum. All the brittle mutants had brittle roots, leaves, leaf sheaths, culms, and spikes, and were also susceptible to lodging. The mutants had 47–57% reduced α-cellulose in the secondary cell walls than that of T. monococcum indicating that all of them had defective synthesis of cellulose. All the mutants were monogenic recessive. Bulk segregation analysis of the mutants, using Am genome anchored SSR markers in their F 2 populations with T. boeoticum, located the mutants, brc1, brc2, and brc3 on chromosome 6A, 3A, and 1A of T. monococcum, respectively. Molecular analysis of the putatively linked markers showed that brc1 mapped on chromosome 6AS between Xbarc37 and Xbarc113 markers, brc2 on chromosome 3AL between Xcfd62 and Xcfa2170 markers whereas brc3 mapped on chromosome 1AL between Xgwm135 and Xwmc470 markers. Isolation and mapping of three different brittle culm mutants in wheat for the first time shows that there might be many more genes in wheat which affect synthesis and deposition of cellulose. 相似文献

Purpose
The present paper concerns the distribution and mobility of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe) in the soils of some abandoned mine sites in Italy and their transfer to wild flora.Materials and methods
Soils and plants were sampled from mixed sulphide mine dumps in different parts of Italy, and the concentrations of heavy metals were determined.Results and discussion
The phytoremediation ability of Salix species (Salix eleagnos, Salix purpurea and Salix caprea), Taraxacum officinale and P?lantago major for heavy metals and, in particular, zinc was estimated. The results showed that soils affected by mining activities presented total Zn, Cu, Pb and Fe concentrations above the internationally recommended permissible limits. A highly significant correlation occurred between metal concentrations in soils.Conclusions
The obtained results confirmed the environmental effects of mine waste; exploring wild flora ability to absorb metals, besides metal exploitation, proved a useful tool for planning possible remediation projects.988.
In this work, the novel chitosan derivative ethylamine hydroxyethyl chitosan (EHC) was synthesized and blended with cellulose in an aqueous N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) solution in order to fabricate antibacterial chitosan/cellulose fiber. The rheological behaviors of the obtained co-solution in both steady and dynamic states were carefully investigated to determine the spinnability of the co-solution. In steady state, the addition of EHC was found to preserve the power-law flow characteristics of cellulose in the aqueous NMMO solution, while broadening the first Newtonian fluid-flow area. Under dynamic conditions, both Han-plot and viscoelastic analyses indicated the homogeneity of the co-solution. EHC/cellulose antibacterial fibers were successfully spun via the lyocell process using aqueous NMMO as the solvent, confirming the excellent spinnability of the EHC/cellulose co-solution. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the morphology of the obtained EHC/cellulose fibers; they were also investigated for antibacterial activity. The obtained EHC/cellulose fiber exhibited good spinning consistency and strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, demonstrating potential applications for the material in antibacterial textiles. 相似文献

Conjoint analysis is a method for measuring and modeling consumer preferences for multiattribute alternatives. The purpose
of this research was to determine the preferred high-performance fabrics for a mountaineering jacket to identify those fabric
attributes best suited to the consumer’s needs. A conjoint analysis was conducted using 120 samples taken from mountaineering
club members including university students and amateur hikers, who ranked their preferences in the selection of a hypothetical
jacket based on the profiles derived from an orthogonal design. Our results show that the water/windproof attribute was the
most important in choosing a hypothetical jacket (27.6 %), followed by price (24.9 %), breathability (24.8 %), durability
