Waterlogging on croplands is increasing in various areas of the world. This study evaluated the yield penalty by early and late waterlogging on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and field pea (Pisum sativum L.). Plants cultivated outdoors were exposed to a 14-day waterlogging during vegetative (at 65 days after sowing (DAS)) or reproductive (at 85/87 DAS) stages, followed by drained conditions until maturity. Yield (seed weight per plant) and its components (number of spikes/siliques/pods per plant, number of grains per spike/silique/pod and 1,000 grain weight) were assessed at maturity, along with morphological (number of tillers/branches) and shoot and root dry weight responses after waterlogging and during recovery. Wheat was the most tolerant species achieving 86% and 71% of controls in yield with early and late waterlogging, related to fewer grains per spike. Barley and rapeseed tolerated early waterlogging (yields 85% and 79% of controls) as compared to late waterlogging (32% and 26% of controls), mainly due to fewer spikes per plant (barley) or reductions in seeds per silique (rapeseed). Field pea was greatly affected by waterlogging at both timings, attaining a yield of only 6% of controls on average due to much fewer pods and fewer seeds per pod. So, wheat could be an option for areas facing either winter or spring transient waterlogging (i.e. early or late stages); barley and rapeseed are recommended only with if water excess occurs in early stages and field pea is intolerant to waterlogging. 相似文献

Cover crops under different managements vs. frequent tillage in almond orchards in semiarid conditions: Effects on soil quality 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Frequent tillage has been widely used in rainfed orchards in SE Spain in order to impede weed establishment and to increase water reposition in the soil profile. However, this practice may lead to soil degradation by decreasing structural stability, organic carbon content and microbial activity. This work examines the effect of different cover crop managements and frequent tillage on soil physical, chemical and biological properties in almond orchards in SE Spain. Two cover crops (oat – Avena sativa L. and oat-vetch – Vicia sativa L.) with two fertilization managements (mineral and organic) and three harvesting regimes (grazing in mid May, hay in early June, and grain-straw in mid July) were compared to a frequently tilled orchard system (three or four tillages per year). Most parameters were sensitive to soil management. Wet aggregate stability, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon:nitrogen ratio, phosphatase, and β-glucosidase activities increased with cover crops, whereas the soil–water content declined, especially for the grain-straw treatment. The kind of fertilizer affected the available P content, which was higher for mineral fertilizer, and influenced the β-glucosidase activity, which augmented for the organic fertilizer. Livestock dejections depressed phosphatase activity, and increased WSC and available P.This study suggests that cover crops in semiarid environments improve soil quality compared to frequently tilled management, by increasing the organic matter content, improving the chemical and physical fertility of the soil, and enhancing the soil biological activity. Only higher water extraction by the plants could affect the orchard development and/or productivity; however, early cover crop removal would minimize possible yield losses. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the zootechnical performance and water quality of a cachama blanca (Piaractus brachypomus) culture using biofloc technology (BFT) versus a system with daily water exchange (DWE). To do this, 180 juveniles (mean initial weight: 5.40 ± 0.19 g) were distributed in 12 circular plastic tanks with stocking densities of 20 or 40 individuals m3; then, they were cultured for 91 days. BFT treatments kept a C:N ratio approximately of 15:1. Temperature, pH and oxygen were monitored daily, while the other variables were measured weekly. Most productive variables were significantly influenced by both culture system and stocking density with significantly higher values of daily weight gain, total weight gain and total length for fish kept in DWE 20. However, only minor differences were observed within the BFT system. With the exception of the toxic nitrogen compounds (NH4+ and NO2?), all the other water quality parameters were within the acceptable ranges for the cultivation of tropical fish. Microorganisms started to settle from the first week. A total of 23 genera were present, the most outstanding of which being seven genera of ciliates and three rotifers, rhizopods and chlorophytes. In conclusion, both systems BFT and DWE are useful for increasing the production of P. brachypomus in captivity. From a battery of microsatellite markers (100 loci), recently identified by our group, we have selected eight for parentage assignment in Senegal sole ( Solea senegalensis ). This tool is based on microsatellite loci obtained from four genomic DNA libraries and one cDNA library. Within the eight loci (six from anonymous genomic DNA sequences and two located in expressed sequence tags of known genes), we have found, in an analysis of a reproductive broodstock, between nine and 16 alleles. The expected heterozygosity was between 0.616 and 0.860. In addition, we have optimized the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) conditions to amplify all loci simultaneously in a single multiplex PCR reaction, and we have tested three lots of male and female (five to six individuals) and three offspring (50–60 larvae each). The use of the eight microsatellite loci, the possibility of amplifying them in a single PCR reaction and the high value of the exclusion probability (0.9992) make this multiplex PCR method a unique tool for parentage assignment.
Finally, analysing one meiotic gynogenetic progeny, we have determined the relative distance of six of these loci to the centromere, and we have also found that all of them are unlinked. Free-living cells of the social amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum can aggregate and develop into multicellular fruiting bodies in which many die altruistically as they become stalk cells that support the surviving spores. Dictyostelium cells exhibit kin discrimination--a potential defense against cheaters, which sporulate without contributing to the stalk. Kin discrimination depends on strain relatedness, and the polymorphic genes tgrB1 and tgrC1 are potential components of that mechanism. Here, we demonstrate a direct role for these genes in kin discrimination. We show that a matching pair of tgrB1 and tgrC1 alleles is necessary and sufficient for attractive self-recognition, which is mediated by differential cell-cell adhesion. We propose that TgrB1 and TgrC1 proteins mediate this adhesion through direct binding. This system is a genetically tractable ancient model of eukaryotic self-recognition. 相似文献

The hyphomycete Chalara paradoxa CH32 produced an extracellular beta-glucosidase during the trophophase. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity by ion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. The purified enzyme had an estimated molecular mass of 170 kDa by size-exclusion chromatography and 167 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The enzyme had maximum activity at pH 4.0-5.0 and 45 degrees C. The enzyme was inactivated at 60 degrees C. At room temperature, it was unstable at acidic pH, but it was stable to alkaline pH. The purified enzyme was inhibited markedly by Hg(2+) and Ag(2+) and also to some extent by the detergents SDS, Tween 80, and Triton X-100 at 0.1%. Enzyme activity increased by 3-fold in the presence of 20% ethanol and to a lesser extent by other organic solvents. Purified beta-glucosidase was active against cellobiose and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside but did not hydrolyze lactose, maltose, sucrose, cellulosic substrates, or galactopyranoside, mannopyranoside, or xyloside derivatives of p-nitrophenol. The V(max) of the enzyme for p-NPG (K(m) = 0.52 mM) and cellobiose (K(m) = 0.58 mM) were 294 and 288.7 units/mg, respectively. Hydrolysis of pNPG was inhibited competitively by glucose (K(i) = 11.02 mM). Release of reducing sugars from carboxymethylcellulose by a purified endoglucanase produced by the same organism increased markedly in the presence of beta-glucosidase. 相似文献

Post-harvest toughening of asparagus spears is associated with a large increase in monomeric and diferulic acids in the cell walls of stem tissues. The purpose of this study has been to investigate the distribution of these phenolic components among cell wall polymers and the role they play in the formation of associated pectic-xylan-phenolic complexes in relation to post-harvest toughening. The phenolic esters are found in all the extractable polysaccharide fractions, particularly the 0.5 M KOH fraction, as well as the insoluble cellulose-rich residue. The storage-related increase occurs in all fractions but is most prominent in the 0.5 M KOH-soluble components. Degradation of 0.5 M KOH subfractions with pure polysaccharide degrading enzymes has confirmed the occurrence of pectic-xylan-phenolic complexes in which ferulic acid and its dehydrodimers are attached to the xylan component but not to the pectic component. Studies on cell separation show that the maturation- and storage-related increase in thermal stability of cell adhesion (and therefore texture) is probably due to an increase in phenolic cross linking of xylans mainly in the parenchyma tissues. This overcomes the thermal lability of the pectic polysaccharides that are responsible for cell adhesion in immature tissues. The storage-induced appearance of some of the diferulic acid moieties in a number of wall polymer fractions supports the hypothesis that the storage affect is a wound-induced response rather than a continuation of maturation-related activity. 相似文献

Secondary cavity-nesting birds (SCN), which cannot create their own breeding cavities, are expected to be influenced by habitat alteration caused by forest management practices, but the mechanisms underlying the distribution pattern of SCN subjected to different management systems are poorly known. To improve our knowledge on these mechanisms, we examine cavity abundance, cavity occupation and reproductive performance of SCN in Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) forests subjected to two management systems: (i) dense “young forests”, maintained at such stage by clear-cuttings and burns, and (ii) “old forest”, subjected to extensive traditional grazing and scarce firewood extraction by selective cutting. Young forests had considerably lower density of cavities (1.29 ± 0.71 vs 15.09 ± 2.00 cavities ha−1), SCN species (0.18 ± 0.11 vs 0.61 ± 0.07 species ha−1) and nests (0.40 ± 0.27 vs 2.67 ± 0.25 nests of all SCN ha−1) than old forests, indicating that a low availability of cavities may limit SCN assemblages in young oak forests. However, reproductive parameters of great (Parus major) and blue (Cyanistes caeruleus) tits associated with the availability of food (laying date, clutch size, nestling number and weight, adult weight) did not differ between both forest types, suggesting that food supply was not reduced in young forests, at least for tits during the breeding season. Large diameter (up to 170 cm dbh) decayed trees were the most likely to hold cavities, but birds preferred smaller living cavity-trees for nesting (90% of nests in 21-65 cm dbh trees). The preservation of cavity-trees within traditionally managed old oak forests is crucial in providing nesting opportunities to SCN. Besides, the protection of these traditionally managed forests would also benefit to other forest organisms that depend on old and open oak forests. 相似文献

Lameness and mortality of 0.55% to 1.00% per week occurred in 32-to-33-wk-old broiler breeder hens in a complex involving eight houses. Males were not affected. Laboratory evaluation of 19 birds, over 2 wk, revealed complete rupture or partial tear, primarily of the gastrocnemius tendon; the fibularis longus, fibularis brevis, and flexor muscles and their tendons were injured in a few birds. Rupture of the gastrocnemius tendon has been observed in broiler breeder chickens older than 12 wk of age and it is characterized by lameness secondary to unilateral or bilateral rupture of the tendon. The cause of this condition has been primarily attributed to reovirus infection but rupture by other causes can also occur. In this case, there was no evidence of synovitis or reovirus infection in the birds. The cause of the ruptures was attributed to aggressive males when the ratio of males to females was increased from seven or eight males per 100 females at 22-23 wk to nine or 10 per 100 at 31 wk of age. 相似文献
