Prevalence, causative factors, treatment, and preventative measures for O149:K91:F4 Escherichia coli infection of postweaning pigs was determined by using a cross-sectional study including 70 farms in Ontario. Surveys were distributed and samples cultured bacteriologically, resulting in 30% of farms testing positive to E. coli 0149:K91:F4. Possible causative factors, such as housing or nutrition, were not significantly different between positive and negative farms. Use of injectable antibiotics (P = 0.05) and zinc oxide (P = 0.003) was higher on E. coli O149:K91:K88 (F4)-positive farms. A higher level of biosecurity and the presence of other diseases may be associated with an increased risk of isolating E. coli O149:K91:F4 from weanling pigs. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate canarypox-vectored equine influenza virus (EIV) vaccines expressing hemagglutinins of A/equine/Kentucky/94 (vCP1529) and A2/equine/Ohio /03 (vCP2242) for induction of antibody responses against canine influenza virus (CIV) in dogs. ANIMALS: 35 dogs. PROCEDURES: Dogs were randomly allocated into 4 groups; group 1 (n = 8) and group 2 (9) were inoculated SC on days 0 and 28 with 1.0 mL (approx 10(5.7) TCID(50)) of vCP1529 and vCP2242, respectively. Dogs in group 3 (n = 9) were inoculated twice with 0.25 mL (approx 10(5.7) TCID(50)) of vCP2242 via the transdermal route. The 9 dogs of group 4 were control animals. All dogs were examined for adverse reactions. Sera, collected on days -1, 7, 13, 21, 28, 35, and 42, were tested by hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and virus neutralization (VN) assays for antibodies against CIV antigens A/Canine/FL/43/04-PR and A/Canine/NY/115809/05, respectively. RESULTS: Inoculations were tolerated well. The HI and VN antibodies were detected by 7 days after primary inoculation. Most dogs of groups 1 and 2 and all dogs of group 3 had detectable antibodies by 14 days after initial inoculation. The second inoculation induced an anamnestic response, yielding geometric mean HI titers of 139, 276, and 1,505 and VN titers of 335, 937, and 3,288 by day 42 (14 days after booster inoculation) in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Canarypox-vectored EIV vaccines induce biologically important antibodies and may substantially impact CIV transmission within a community and be of great value in protecting dogs against CIV-induced disease. 相似文献

Gallibacterium was recently established as a new genus including organisms previously reported as Pasteurella anatis, [Actinobacillus] salpingitidis and avian Pasteurella haemolytica-like organisms. The aim of the present study was to develop a PCR method allowing unambiguous identification of Gallibacterium. PCR primers positioned in the 16S rRNA (1133fgal) and 23S rRNA (114r) genes were defined and their specificity was subsequently tested on 122 strains. Twenty-five of the strains represented all of the presently available 15 phenotypic variants of Gallibacterium from different geographical locations, 22 other strains represented other poultry associated bacterial species or bacteria which could pose a differential diagnostic problem including members of the families Pasteurellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Flavobacteriaceae, and finally 75 Gallibacterium field strains isolated from Mexican chicken egg-layers. Specific amplicons were generated in all 100 Gallibacterium strains tested, whereas none of the non-Gallibacterium strains tested positive. Correct identification was confirmed by hybridization with the Gallibacterium specific probe GAN850. Two internal amplification control strategies were successfully incorporated into the PCR assay, one based on amplification of the house-keeping gene rpoB (sharing target DNA) and another based on addition of trout DNA (foreign target DNA) and amplification with beta-actin specific primers. In conclusion, the described PCR assay enables specific identification of Gallibacterium and will thus stand as a strong alternative to the present diagnostic methods. 相似文献

The effect of three enological techniques (low temperature prefermentative maceration, must freezing with dry ice, and the use of a maceration enzyme) on the extraction of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins from must to wine during fermentative maceration was studied to determine the extent to which these compounds are extracted and to assess the changes on their qualitative composition due to enological technique applied. The results showed that the dry ice treatment led to wines with high color intensity and high anthocyanin content, the maximum rate of extraction being observed the first 6 days of fermentative maceration. Regarding the effect of the different techniques on the quantitative and qualitative composition of proanthocyanidins, only the dry ice treatment seemed to favor the extraction of high molecular weight skin proanthocyanidins. The low temperature prefermentative maceration treatment led to the highest concentration of proanthocyanidins at the moment of pressing; however, this treatment, contrary to expectations, led to wines with the highest content of seed-derived proanthocyanidins. The use of the maceration enzyme also increased the concentration of proanthocyanidins during all of the fermentative process, as compared to a control wine, although the increase was not only due to skin proanthocyanidins but also seed proanthocyanidins. To evaluate the effect of salinity on the hatching rate, hatching time, survival percentage, osmoregulation pattern and the incidence of abnormalities in newly hatched larvae, embryos of Sphoeroides annulatus (Jenyns 1842) were exposed to 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 35 and 40 psu. The hatching percentage (HP), survival percentage (PS), normal larvae (PN), deformed larvae (PD) and hatching time (HT) were significantly affected by salinity (P < 0.05). The embryos exposure to 5 psu caused that HP, PS, and PN had lower values (2.6 ± 0.32, 7.78 ± 0.88 and 70.37 ± 7.75% respectively), PD and HT had the highest values 26.67 ± 7.54% and 55.53 ± 0.59 h respectively. However, the survival of newly hatched larvae was not possible in 5 ups, though it was in 40 ups. Osmotic pressure (OP) remained constant in each salinity, whereas isosmotic points changed from 435.5 mOsm kg?1 in 21 h post fertilization to 342.8 mOsm kg?1 at 47 h post fertilization, obtaining a pattern of hyper‐osmoregulation at lower salinities and hypo‐osmoregulation in higher salinities. This study is the first carried out on embryos of this species; therefore, the obtained information is essential to improve strategies and growing conditions in their initial development. 相似文献

This work examines the proposition that positive interactions among neighboring individuals within a population may produce
landscape patterns in boundary intensity. The large scale patterns emerge because the interactions favor an aggregated distribution
in the face of a potential limiting factor, and the strength of that factor varies over the landscape. The consequences of
spatially varying neighborhood processes were explored using cellular automata simulating the structure of mussel beds in
2-dimensional intertidal landscapes, each characterized by a vertical gradient of tidal immersion and a horizontal gradient
of wave energy. Running the model with and without the neighborhood processes demonstrated that the facilitating neighborhood
processes elevate intensity above that caused by the gradients, and consequently abrupt (high intensity) boundaries emerged
in the midst of gradual environmental variation. Trends generated on the 2-D landscape by the model were compared with those
in photo-mosaics of intertidal mussel beds, Mytilus californianus on rocky shores of the British Columbia. The analysis involved interpolation of boundary locations using a spatially-constrained
cluster algorithm, and then estimation of the corresponding boundary intensities using a landscape index aggregation (CLUMPY).
The general similarity between predicted and real trends in intensity over the wave energy gradients suggests that spatially
varying neighborhood processes determine much of the landscape scale variation in boundary intensity, while certain discrepancies
(e.g. a more rapid rise of observed intensities with increasing wave exposure) suggest modifications of the theory and new

Practicing veterinarians play an important role in detecting the initial outbreak of disease in animal populations. A pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of a veterinary-based surveillance system for the Ontario swine industry. A total of 7 practitioners from 5 clinics agreed to submit information from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. The surveillance program was evaluated in terms of timeliness, compliance, geographic coverage, and data quality. Our study showed that the veterinary-based surveillance system was acceptable to practitioners and produced useful data. The program obtained information from 25% of pig farms in Ontario during this time period. However, better communication with practitioners, more user-friendly recording systems that can be adapted to each clinic's management system, active involvement of the clinics' technical personnel, and the use of financial incentives may help to improve compliance and timeliness. 相似文献

Thermogravimetry (TG) was used to investigate the pollution on marine sediments close to urban and industrial sites. Sediment weight loss when heated (TG) was performed under oxidizing conditions from 250°C to 900°C. The first derivative of TG curves was used to generate a Cartesian diagram for sediments cataloging, in a quick way, according to their organic matter and grain size contents. Thus, sediment placed at the right of the diagram were characterized by a prevalence of the thin fraction and high organic matter content, while on the left side, samples were characterized by large sandy fractions, and, in general, low organic matter contents. Two references materials and metal pollution index were used to validate the Cartesian diagram obtained. 相似文献

Inflammation caused by bovine respiratory disease (BRD) continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing beef cattle producers and feedlot managers. Inflammation decreases DMI, ADG, and G:F in feedlot calves, decreasing growth rate and increasing days on feed, which results in economic losses during the feeding period. During the past decade, marketing of feedlot animals has changed from selling cattle on a live basis to a grid-based marketing system. When cattle are marketed on a live basis, the economic effects of BRD stop at increased health cost and decreased feedlot performance, carcass weight, and death loss. However, when cattle are marketed in a grid-based system, inflammation has the potential to also affect carcass cutability and quality. The effects of inflammation on feedlot cattle in regards to performance are well understood; however, specific effects on cattle growth and ultimately carcass merit are not as well described. Recent studies in feedlot cattle have indicated that the incidence of BRD decreases both HCW and marbling; however, mechanisms are not understood. Research in other species has demonstrated that during the acute phase response, pro-inflammatory cytokines promote skeletal muscle catabolism to supply AA and energy substrates for immune tissues. Further, during this early immune response, the liver changes its metabolic priorities to the production of acute phase proteins for use in host defense. Together these dramatic shifts in systemic metabolism may explain the detrimental effects on performance and carcass traits commonly associated with BRD in feedlot calves. Moreover, recent studies relative to human health have revealed complex multilevel interactions between the metabolic and immune systems, and highlighted inflammation as being a significant contributor to major metabolic diseases. The objective of this paper is to review data to help explain the economical and physiological effects of inflammation on cattle growth and carcass merit. 相似文献
