Purpose  

Sediment erosion and transport is a governing factor in the ecological and commercial health of aquatic ecosystems from the watershed to the sea. There is now a general consensus that biogenic mediation of submersed sediments contributes significantly to the resistance of the bed to physical forcing. This important ecosystem function has mainly been linked to microalgae (“ecosystem engineers”) and their associated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), yet little is known about the impact of bacterial assemblages and how their varying interactions with microalgae affect the overall biostabilization potential of the combined community.  相似文献

Microtopography and roughness are highly dynamic properties of the soil surface and important factors governing surface runoff and erosion processes. While various remote sensing technologies were successfully applied for topography measurements at different spatial scales, there is a lack of field studies that collected systematically microtopography data over long observation periods. In this paper an approach to measure and quantify surface roughness in the field based on laser scanning technologies is presented. Between June 2004 and November 2005 97 in-situ measurements were conducted in a test site with two different sandy substrates in vegetation-free conditions. Two-dimensional high-resolution (1 mm) datasets where generated for eight micro erosion plots of 0.25 to 2.9 m2 in size. Dynamics and pattern formation were quantified for surface roughness and surface height changes. Roughness patterns at different scales were analyzed by local roughness indices using sliding windows of 3 to 55 mm in size. Results show strong spatial and temporal dynamics in surface roughness as well as substrate-specific variations. Temporal roughness variations could be detected and were linked to precipitation patterns. The methods presented in this paper are considered suitable to generate high-resolution datasets on spatiotemporal and multi-scale microtopography patterns and to advance the understanding of surface processes at small scales in natural environments.  相似文献

Blood smear examination in a 4-day-old alpaca revealed massive erythrocyte parasitism by Mycoplasma haemolamae. Blood collected from both the nonparasitemic dam and the cria were positive for M. haemolamae by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. These findings suggest in utero transmission of M. haemolamae in camelids, even when the dam is not parasitemic.  相似文献

Early season leaf growth depends largely on nitrogen (N) provided by remobilization from storage, and many studies have tested the effect of N availability to roots on the amount of N provided for new leaf development by remobilization. Although it is well known that the light regime experienced by a leaf influences the amount of N per unit leaf area (LA), the effect of the local light regime on the amount of N derived either directly from root uptake or from remobilization for early season leaf growth has never been tested at an intra- canopy scale. The objective of this study was to quantify the relative importance of (1) N availability to roots, (2) local light regime experienced by the foliage (at the shoot scale) and (3) leaf rank along the shoot, on the total amount of N allocated to leaves and on the proportions of N provided by remobilization and root uptake. To quantify the importance of N uptake and remobilization as sources of leaf N, potted hybrid walnut trees (Juglans nigra L. x regia L.) were grown outdoors in sand and fed with a labeled ((15)N) nutrient solution. By removing the apical bud, the trees were manipulated to produce only two shoots. The experimental design had two factors: (1) high (HN; 8 mol N m(-3)) and low (LN; 2 mol N m(-3)) N availability; and (2) high (HL; 90% of incident photosynthetically active photon flux (PPF)) and low (LL; 10% of incident PPF) light. Total leaf N per tree was unaffected by either N availability or irradiance. The HN treatment increased the amount of leaf N derived from root uptake at the whole-tree scale (typically around 8 and 2% in the HN and LN treatments, respectively). Nitrogen allocation within foliage of individual trees was controlled by the local light regime, which strongly affected individual leaf characteristics as leaf mass per unit LA and area- based amount of leaf (N(a)). Decreasing the light availability to a branch decreased the amount of N allocated to it, benefiting the less shaded branches. In contrast, shading of the lower branch did not affect the fraction of total leaf N remobilized for either the lower, shaded branch or the upper, unshaded branch. The relevance of these findings for tree growth modeling is discussed.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to investigate Sauternes wine aromas. In all wine extracts, polyfunctional thiols were revealed to have a huge impact. A very strong bacon-petroleum odor emerged at RI = 845 from a CP-Sil5-CB column. Two thiols proved to participate in this perception: 3-methyl-3-sulfanylbutanal and 2-methylfuran-3-thiol. A strong synergetic effect was evidenced between the two compounds. The former, never mentioned before in wines, and not found in the musts of this study, is most probably synthesized during fermentation. 3-Methylbut-2-ene-1-thiol, 3-sulfanylpropyl acetate, 3-sulfanylhexan-1-ol, and 3-sulfanylheptanal also contribute to the global aromas of Sauternes wines. Among other key odorants, the presence of a varietal aroma (alpha-terpineol), sotolon, fermentation alcohols (3-methylbutan-1-ol and 2-phenylethanol) and esters (ethyl butyrate, ethyl hexanoate, and ethyl isovalerate), carbonyls (trans-non-2-enal and beta-damascenone), and wood flavors (guaiacol, vanillin, eugenol, beta-methyl-gamma-octalactone, and Furaneol) is worth stressing.  相似文献

The plant lignans secoisolariciresinol and matairesinol occur in numerous foods such as oil seeds, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. We have studied the hitherto unknown oxidative metabolism of secoisolariciresinol and matairesinol in hepatic microsomes from untreated and Aroclor 1254-induced Wistar rats and from humans. Five oxidative metabolites of secoisolariciresinol and 10 oxidative metabolites of matairesinol were detected in rat liver microsomes, and their chemical structures were elucidated. The pathways in the metabolism of both secoisolariciresinol and matairesinol included aliphatic and aromatic hydroxylation, whereas oxidative demethylation was only observed for matairesinol. Human hepatic microsomes were able to metabolize secoisolariciresinol whereas matairesinol was only poorly metabolized. This study clearly shows that secoisolariciresinol and matairesinol are substrates of cytochrome P450-mediated metabolism. However, from preliminary experiments with rats dosed orally with secoisolariciresinol and matairesinol, it appears that the intestinal absorption and subsequent oxidative metabolism of these plant lignans occur only to a very small extent due to the highly efficient conversion of secoisolariciresinol and matairesinol to the mammalian lignans enterodiol and enterolactone by the gut microflora.  相似文献

Pesticide sorption in soils is controlled by time-dependent processes such as diffusion into soil aggregates and microscopic sorbent particles. This study examines the rate-controlling step for time-dependent sorption in clay loam aggregates. Aggregates (5 mm) were stabilized with alginate, and adsorption of azoxystrobin, chlorotoluron, and cyanazine was measured in batch systems equilibrated for periods between 1 h and 7 days. Stepwise desorption was measured at 1- or 3-day intervals following 1 or 7 days of adsorption. Time-dependent adsorption was also measured on dispersed soil. Results were interpreted using process-based modeling. Adsorption on dispersed soil was described by intraparticle sorption and diffusion. Adsorption in the aggregates was much less than in suspension, suggesting that part of the sorption capacity of the dispersed soil was not available within the aggregates (approximately 50%). Adsorption and desorption were reversible and could be described by pore diffusion into the aggregate with effective diffusion coefficients between 0.5 x 10(-10) and 1 x 10(-10) m2 s(-1), a factor 3-6 slower than estimated theoretically. Intraparticle diffusion did not seem to contribute to sorption in the aggregates at this time scale. Apparent hysteresis was explained by nonattainment of equilibrium during the adsorption and desorption steps.  相似文献

The technique of diffusive gradients in thin films or diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) has been used in this work for the in situ measurement of labile Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species. Direct measurement of Cr(VI) was also carried out in parallel with a field-based colourimetric technique based on the EPA 7196 diphenyl-carbohydrazide (DPC) method. The efficiency of the DGT and DPC methods were tested (a) in the laboratory, using synthetic solutions in the presence of realistic concentrations of Cr, humic substances (HS), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and (b) in the field, in river water affected by effluents discharged by the tannery industry. The main advantage of the DGT method is that it allows the in situ separation of labile species of Cr(III) and Cr(VI), though there are still uncertainties about its performance in field conditions. The DPC method proved to be a fast, accurate, and relatively economical option for the field-based determination of Cr(VI). Sample acidification and ageing of unacidified samples from contaminated aquatic environments, produced significant errors in the determination of ‘dissolved’ Cr. The concentration of Cr(VI) determined by either the DGT or the DPC method exceeds recommended international guidelines.  相似文献
