Actomyosin-like protein isolated from mammalian brain

A protein with characteristics similar to actomyosin has been isolated from whole brain of rat and cat. It is soluble in 0.6 molar potassium chloride and insoluble in 0.1 molar potassium chloride. It superprecipitates with magnesium ions and adenosine triphosphate. It has adenosine triphosphatase activity stimulated by either magnesium or calcium ions. Both superprecipitation and adenosine triphosphatase activity are inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate and Mersalyl but not by ouabain.     

Strontium-90: effects of chronic ingestion on farrowing performance of miniature swine

In experiments involving the ingestion of strontium-90 by nearly 800 female miniature swine and extending over three generations, no significant differences in litter size, percentage of stillborn, or birth weight were observed between controls and animals ingesting up to 625 microcuries of strontium-90 per day. At 625 microcuries per day, these animals were ingesting more than a million times the peak value of strontium-90 ever reported in the American diet. Animals on 3100 microcuries per day did not survive the gestation period. From these studies, it is evident that feeding levels of strontium-90 high enough to affect fetal or neonatal mortality in this species will not permit maternal survival long enough for the bearing of young.     

Dispersal pathways for particle-associated pollutants

Particle-associated pollutants (totaling 10(7) metric tons per year) are introduced into the New York Bight by ocean dumping, estuarine discharge, sewage outfalls, eolian transport, and shipping waste and spillage. Oceanic and estuarine circulation processes dilute and transport the particles by a natural dispersal system that also tends to be highly distributive; particle-associated pollutants apparently seek the same sinks in the Hudson River shelf valley and intracoastal weltlands, regardless of their point of introduction.
