Long‐term crop rotation trials were designed to assess sustainability of alternatives to traditional fallow and monocropping. The trial described here (6 years) involved wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in rotation with lentil (Lens culinaris L.), forage vetch (Vicia sativa), pasture medic (Medicago spp.), fallow and watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris). Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was compared with wheat for an additional 2 years. Cereal grain and straw yields were highest with fallow and watermelon followed by vetch, lentil and medic; the latter showed no differential effect of variable grazing intensity. Fertilizer N increased yields except in the low‐rainfall years (less than 250 mm). Barley out‐yielded wheat in terms of grain, but not straw. Medic yielded highest in dry matter, whereas lentil produced highest seed yield. Despite the difficulty of assessing crop and animal‐oriented rotations because of non‐commonality of outputs, economic considerations are foremost, but other benefits of rotations (soil quality, water‐use relations) are also relevant to the overall assessment of cereal‐based Mediterranean rotations. The study suggested barley rather than wheat as the desired cereal in rotation with legumes in this marginal‐rainfall (350 mm) environment and provided support for the viability of vetch and lentil in the cropping system. Given the importance of sheep in the region’s farming system, vetch is likely to have a major role in crop rotations.  相似文献

Chemical fertilizer use has contributed significantly to increased global food output in the past half century, especially in climatically favourable regions of the world. However, in drier agro‐ecological zones, such as in West Asia and North Africa (WANA) with a Mediterranean‐type climate, fertilizer use has been low but has increased rapidly in the past few decades. Chemical fertilizer use is now widely adopted in rainfed and irrigated agriculture. As elsewhere, fertilizer use is underpinned by concerns about biological and economic efficiency. Fertilizer use efficiency is central to the current concept of fertilizer best management practices (FBMP), which embraces right source, right place, right timing and right application method. In this brief review, we highlight such FBMP concepts as related to agriculture of the WANA region, with emphasis on the key nutrients for crop production. Rainfall has a dominant influence on dryland crop yields. Nitrogen (N) use efficiency increases with increasing rainfall and is influenced by crop rotation. Under rainfed conditions, modest N losses by volatilization can occur. Leaching losses are usually minimal. Phosphorus use (P) efficiency is higher with band application than with broadcasting. Balanced fertilization, especially involving potassium (K) and micronutrients, is fundamental to efficient nutrient use. Fertilizer efficiency is also influenced by soil test values and agronomic factors that influence crop yields, e.g. sowing date and varietal differences. Rational fertilizer application rates are guided by calibration–response trials. Effective fertilizer use in the region is also dictated by external factors such as government policies and a functioning extension service. In contrast to other regions of the world, environmental impacts from the overuse of fertilizers are relatively minor, while developments in fertilizer formulations that promote efficiency have yet to have impact. Despite the relatively low fertilizer use intensity in dryland areas such as the WANA region, the FBMP comprehensive approach is a logical framework within which to achieve the most efficient management and use of fertilizer in the region’s agriculture.  相似文献

We tested the hypotheses that hydraulic conductance is lower in old (about 250 years old and 30 m tall) compared to young (about 40 years old and 10 m tall) Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws. trees and that lower hydraulic conductance of old trees limits their photosynthesis. Hydraulic conductance at the end of summer 1995, calculated from leaf water potential and leaf gas exchange measurements on one-year-old needles, was 44% lower in old trees compared to young trees growing in a mixed age-class stand on the east slope of the Oregon Cascades. Whole-tree sapflow per unit leaf area averaged 53% lower in old trees compared to young trees and mean hydraulic conductance calculated from sapflow and water potential data was 63% lower in old trees than in young trees. For the entire summer, stomatal conductance (g(s)) and assimilation (A) declined more steeply with air saturation deficit (D) in old trees than in young trees. For both old and young trees, mean g(s) and A were approximately 32 and 21% lower, respectively, at typical midday D values (2.5-3.0 kPa). We hypothesized that if hydraulic conductance limits g(s) and A, then increasing or decreasing the leaf specific conductance of a branch will result in proportional changes in the responses of g(s) and A with D. Removal of 50% of the foliage from a set of experimental branches on old trees caused g(s) and A to decline less steeply with D in early summer, but values were not significantly different from control values in late summer. Cutting transverse notches in branches on young trees had no effect on the responses of g(s) and A with D. Leaf nitrogen content and photosynthetic capacity were similar suggesting that differences in g(s) and A between old and young trees were not caused by differences in photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

The forest canopy regulates the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the ecosystem and the atmosphere, and provides a habitat for a wide variety of species. Understanding canopy processes is important for modeling forest production and carbon sequestration, and for predicting the effects of global changes in climate and atmospheric chemistry on the functioning of forest ecosystems. The Canopy Processes Working Group of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations has provided a forum for researchers working on forest canopies for nearly 20 years, principally through international meetings held every 2-3 years. In this paper, I review the history of the Canopy Processes Group, show how the research focus has changed and broadened, and provide a brief overview of some of the problems that remain to be solved. These include the topic of our 2001 meeting (Linking the Complexity of Forest Canopies to Ecosystem and Landscape Function), integration of canopy and respiratory processes, carbon allocation, physiological changes with tree age, predicting the response of forests to global change, understanding the genetic control of canopy structure and function, and scaling ecophysiological processes and modeling. Determining how forests will respond to global change and understanding the physiology of forest production will require increased attention to canopy processes and an increased focus on the interactions of canopy processes with other components of the ecosystem.  相似文献

Nutritional surveys in New South Wales Pinus radiata plantations have shown differences in both foliage and soil boron status, particularly as a result of variations in soil parent materials. Plantations on acid igneous parent materials are particularly susceptible to the development of B deficiency, which appears to be further exacerbated bu soil/landscape relationships, water stress and certain management practices.

Boron deficiency in P. radiata on acid igneous soils at Sunny Corner State Forest, N.S.W., was particularly noticeable on lower slopes which usually have relatively high available moisture. These lower-slope soils had severely leached surface horizons, less extractable B, and fewer B-sorption characteristics than the upper sections of the soil catena. These soil properties also adversely affect the capacity of these soils to retain either Na-borate or Ca-borate fertilizers (borax and colemanite, respectively). For equal amounts of B, up to 95% of the borax applied to in-situ soil columns rapidly moved beyond the top 0.3 m of the soil profiles within 21 months, while less than 16% of the colemanite had moved beyond the columns. Leached surface soils of the lower-slope site retained lesser amounts of either B-fertilizer.

Colemanite offers the most cost-effective means of maintaining adequate levels of soil-B in these soil types due to its lower solubility. Management of B deficiency in P. radiata involves appropriate site selection, forest management practices and fertilizers usage.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that stomata respond to changes in hydraulic conductance of the flow path from soil to leaf. In open-grown tall trees, branches of different heights may have different hydraulic conductances because of differences in path length and growth. We determined if leaf gas exchange, branch sap flux, leaf specific hydraulic conductance, foliar carbon isotope composition (delta13C) and ratios of leaf area to sapwood area within branches were dependent on branch height (10 and 25 m) within the crowns of four open-grown ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) trees. We found no difference in leaf gas exchange or leaf specific hydraulic conductance from soil to leaf between the upper and lower canopy of our study trees. Branch sap flux per unit leaf area and per unit sapwood area did not differ between the 10- and 25-m canopy positions; however, branch sap flux per unit sapwood area at the 25-m position had consistently lower values. Branches at the 25-m canopy position had lower leaf to sapwood area ratios (0.17 m2 cm-2) compared with branches at the 10-m position (0.27 m2 cm-2) (P = 0.03). Leaf specific conductance of branches in the upper crown did not differ from that in the lower crown. Other studies at our site indicate lower hydraulic conductance, sap flux, whole-tree canopy conductance and photosynthesis in old trees compared with young trees. This study suggests that height alone may not explain these differences.  相似文献

Lactobacillus plantarum FST 1.7 was screened for in vitro antimicrobial activity and was shown to be active against spoilage moulds and bacteria. Isolation of antimicrobial compounds from cell-free supernatant identified lactic acid, phenyllactic acid and the two cyclic dipeptides cyclo (l-Leu-l-Pro) and cyclo (l-Phe-l-Pro) as the major components responsible for this activity. L. plantarum FST 1.7 was tested for the ability to produce the antifungal compounds during sourdough fermentation and to produce bread of good quality and increased shelf-life. A rheofermentometer was used to examine the gaseous release and development characteristics of the dough. A range of parameters was determined including pH, TTA and specific loaf volume. The results were compared with those obtained using Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis, a chemically acidified and a non-acidified dough. The quality of sourdough and bread produced using L. plantarum FST 1.7 was comparable to that obtained using common sourdough starters, e.g. L. sanfranciscensis. Sourdoughs and breads were evaluated for the ability to retard growth of Fusarium culmorum and Fusarium graminearum two fungi found on breads. Sourdough and bread produced with strain FST 1.7 showed consistent ability to retard the growth of both Fusarium species, thus indicating that L. plantarum FST 1.7 has also the potential to improve the shelf-life of wheat bread.  相似文献

In a preliminary study, we commonly identified Giardia duodenalis in adult dairy cattle from a veterinary college teaching herd. Therefore, the present study was carried out in order to better understand the potential of adult cattle to act as a source for G. duodenalis infections for students and staff at the veterinary college. Fecal samples were collected bi-weekly from this herd of adult cattle (n=30) over an 8-month period to determine the prevalence of G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. within the herd. Nested PCR followed by DNA sequencing was then performed on a subset of positive samples in order to better understand the zoonotic potential of these infections. Every cow was sampled between 11 and 18 times, depending on the date the animal joined the teaching herd. In total, 507 fecal samples were collected from 30 different cows and examined for cysts and oocysts using epifluorescence microscopy. G. duodenalis prevalence during the course of the study ranged from 37% (11/30) to 64% (18/28), with a mean of 49%. Cumulative G. duodenalis prevalence was 73% (22/30). Zoonotic G. duodenalis assemblage A genotype was identified in 43% (6/14) of the G. duodenalis-positive samples on which PCR and genetic sequencing were successfully performed. G. duodenalis assemblage E was identified in 57% (8/14) of these samples. Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were not detected in the feces of any cows during the study period. The presence of the zoonotic G. duodenalis assemblage A in 43% of the sequenced samples indicates that there is a potential risk of infection for students and staff at this research and teaching facility, although the roles of cows as sources of giardiasis in humans remain uncertain. Furthermore, due to the large amount of feces they produce, adult cattle may serve as important sources for G. duodenalis infections in young cattle, or other animals in the facility, despite relatively low numbers of cysts excreted per gram of feces. In contrast, the results of this study indicate that this herd posed a negligible risk of transmitting Cryptosporidium parvum infections to humans.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report use of a biofragmentable anastomosis ring (BAR) device in cats with idiopathic megacolon (FIM) and compare outcome after subtotal colectomy with sutured colocolic anastomosis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Nineteen cats with megacolon. METHODS: Medical records (January 1990-January 2004) of cats treated surgically for idiopathic megacolon with sutured (SUT) or BAR anastomosis were retrieved and reviewed. Operative, short- and long-term complications, and survival times were recorded and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis used to assess outcome. RESULTS: There were 11 SUT and 8 BAR cats. One BAR cat had anastomotic dehiscence 36 hours after surgery. Mild serosal tearing during BAR insertion in 6 cats was corrected by suture reinforcement. One SUT cat developed anastomotic stricture at 32 days. Short-term complication rates at 3 and 7 days were 18% and 45% in the SUT group and 25% and 87.5% in the BAR group, respectively (P=.058). Two SUT cats had persistent loose stool consistency and were euthanatized 254 and 1661 days after surgery. One BAR cat had recurrence of constipation which was managed medically. Long-term complication rates were not significantly different between SUT and BAR (P=.61). The 1 and 4-year survival rates were 90% for SUT and 100% for BAR (P=.29). CONCLUSIONS: No difference was detected for short and long-term complication rates and survival times between SUT and BAR groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The BAR device can be used for colocolic anastomosis in cats with idiopathic megacolon. Serosal tearing during BAR insertion was a common intraoperative complication. Regardless of anastomotic technique, survival outcome after colonic resection is excellent for cats with FIM.  相似文献
