Endostatin concentrations in healthy dogs and dogs with selected neoplasms

Endostatin prevents angiogenesis and tumor growth by inhibiting endothelial cell proliferation and migration. The purpose of this study was to determine serum endostatin concentrations in 53 healthy dogs and in 38 dogs with confirmed malignant neoplasms. Endostatin concentration was determined with a competitive enzymatic immunoassay (EIA) with rabbit polyclonal antibody generated against a recombinant canine endostatin protein. Both the presence of cancer and increasing age were associated with increased serum concentration of endostatin. Endostatin concentration in healthy dogs was 87.7 +/- 3.5 ng/mL. Upper and lower limits of the reference range for serum endostatin concentration in healthy dogs were 60 and 113 ng/mL. Dogs with lymphoma (LSA) and hemangiosarcoma (HSA) had endostatin concentrations of 107 +/- 9.3 ng/mL. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that endostatin can be quantified in dogs and that endostatin concentrations are high in dogs with HSA and LSA.     

B-cell lymphoma in the peripheral nerves of a cat

A B-cell, Burkitt-type lymphoma, diffusely affecting the peripheral nerves and intramuscular nerve branches was diagnosed in a 4-year-old domestic shorthair cat with a chronic progressive history of flaccid tetraparesis and generalized muscle atrophy. There was no evidence of cranial nerve, central nervous system, radicular, bone marrow, splenic, or lymph node involvement. The cat tested negative for feline retroviruses and a wide variety of herpes viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus. The clinical manifestation of this case was similar to the chronic polyneuropathic variant of human diffuse neurolymphomatosis; a condition most commonly caused by an axonopathy resulting from infiltration of peripheral nerves with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.     

Hyperadrenocorticism and hyperprogesteronemia in a cat with an adrenocortical adenocarcinoma

A seven-year-old, neutered male domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for poorly regulated diabetes mellitus and increased skin fragility. Imaging studies revealed a right adrenal gland tumor, but cortisol testing did not support a diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism. Serum concentrations of progesterone and testosterone were increased compared with a group of normal cats, and the clinical signs were attributed to hyperprogesteronemia. At necropsy, a diagnosis of adrenocortical adenocarcinoma was confirmed, and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the presence of progesterone within the tumor. Clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism in cats may occur due to increased serum concentrations of hormones other than cortisol.     

Microscopic Particle Motions in Strongly Coupled Dusty Plasmas

The microscopic particle motions from the crystal to the disordered state of a dusty plasma with micrometer-sized silicon dioxide particle suspensions in a radio-frequency glow discharge system were studied through an optical microimaging system. Small-amplitude random motion around the lattice sites of the crystal state, relative domain motion with varying boundaries, cooperative hopping in the liquid state, and highly disordered motion with increasing radio-frequency power were observed. Chaotic states with different spatial scales under the coherent and stochastic coupling between dust particles and self-organized background plasma fluctuations were also demonstrated.     

Metapopulation dynamics, abundance, and distribution in a microecosystem

The experimental fragmentation of landscapes of a natural ecosystem resulted in declines in the abundance and distribution of most species in the multispecies animal community inhabiting the landscapes and the extinction of many species. These declines caused the deterioration of the positive interspecific relation between local population abundance and distributional extent in this community. However, when patches were connected by habitat corridors, an immigration "rescue effect" arrested declines in both abundance and distribution and maintained the observed positive relation between them. These results demonstrate the importance of metapopulation dynamics and landscape connectivity for the persistence of populations in fragmented landscapes.
