In a crossover study, either a placebo paste or N,N-dimethylglycine was administered orally at a dose rate of 1.2 mg/kg twice daily for five days to six thoroughbred horses, with bodyweights ranging from 424 to 492 kg. Using previously determined regression equations for oxygen uptake (VO2) against speed for each horse, a standardised exercise test was given with speeds equivalent to fixed percentages of the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). The test consisted of two minutes at speeds equivalent to approximately 40 per cent and 50 per cent VO2max, and one minute at speeds that produced approximately 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 per cent VO2max. During the last five seconds of each exercise stage, the values of VO2, carbon dioxide production (VCO2), heart rate, arterial blood and plasma lactate concentrations, arterial blood gases and pH were measured. Before and immediately after the exercise test, muscle biopsies were collected from the middle gluteal muscle to determine the muscle lactate concentrations. The administration of N,N-dimethylglycine produced no significant differences in any of the measured values, and it is concluded that the compound has no beneficial effects on cardiorespiratory function or lactate production in the exercising horse.  相似文献

The effects of a respiratory gas collection mask on arterial blood gases, acid base values, oxygen content, respiratory frequency and heart rate, were investigated in standardbred horses during treadmill exercise at speeds up to 10 m sec-1 and a treadmill slope of 10 per cent. The mask had no significant effect on heart rates during exercise, but respiratory frequency was lower when the mask was used. The increase in respiratory frequency as treadmill velocity increased was also significantly slower with the mask operative. Arterial carbon dioxide tensions were significantly higher during exercise with the mask than without, and arterial oxygen tension was significantly lower at the highest exercise intensity. Arterial oxygen content was significantly lower at all work speeds when the mask was used. There were minimal effects of the mask on arterial acid base values. It was concluded that a respiratory gas collection mask caused alveolar hypoventilation in exercising horses, but did not markedly influence heart rate or arterial acid base values during exercise.  相似文献

Subpalpebral lavage systems (SPLSs) were adapted for use in zoo llamas (Lama glama) and a wild harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) during therapy for severe ulcerative keratitis or corneal perforation. One llama presented with a melting corneal ulcer caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which necessitated frequent application of a topical ophthalmic antibiotic. The lavage system was used routinely during the day and was connected to a balloon infusion system at night to allow for continuous medication administration. The ulcer healed soon after therapy was extended to include overnight treatment with the infusion system. A SPLS system was also combined with a balloon infusor during postoperative treatment of a second llama that had sustained a corneal perforation. Both llamas tolerated the infusor/lavage systems well and regained vision. One llama had minor conjunctival irritation from the SPLS that resolved quickly without treatment. Bilateral SPLS were placed in a wild harbor seal for treatment of severe ulcerative keratitis associated with Candida albicans infection. The seal tolerated the lavage systems well throughout 14 wk of their use in an aquatic environment with other seals. Partial detachment of the lavage systems from the skin of the seal occurred a few times during treatment and was easily corrected. Severe keratitis resolved with administration of antimicrobials through the lavage systems, and the seal was returned to the wild. The use of SPLSs alone or in ombination with balloon infusion systems warrants consideration for exotic, wild, and aquatic animals that cannot tolerate repetitive manual applications of topical ophthalmic medication.  相似文献

The fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by organisms has usually' been measur'ed by the increase in t6tal nitrogen using the Kjeldahl method and, recently, by enriching with 15N isotope using a mass spectrometer after a suitable period of incubation. However, the Kjeldahl method is in accurate, laborious and not sensitive. The isotope UN method is 30 to 100 times more sensitive than the Kjeldahl method, but it is expensive and requires that the experiment is conducted only on a small scale, creating conditions quite different from the natural environment. The method also requires a mass spectrometer. More recently, DILWORTH (1) and SCHOLLHORN and BURRIS (2) observed that acetylene is reduced to ethylene by extracts from Clostridium pasteurianum. Ethylene production in the acetylene-reducing function of nitrogen-fixing microorganisms was determined by gas chromatographic techniques. The acetylene reduction method has been used in the detection of nitrogenase in biological systems (3,4,5,6). The method is reported to be simple, economical and a thousand times more sensitive than the liN method (6). This paper is a preliminary report on the use of the acetylene reduction method in studies on nitrogen fixation of various kinds of materials in the rice fields.  相似文献

Solvent collisions can often mask initial disposition of energy to the products of solution-phase chemical reactions. Here, we show with transient infrared absorption spectra obtained with picosecond time resolution that the nascent HCN products of reaction of CN radicals with cyclohexane in chlorinated organic solvents exhibit preferential excitation of one quantum of the C-H stretching mode and up to two quanta of the bending mode. On time scales of approximately 100 to 300 picoseconds, the HCN products undergo relaxation to the vibrational ground state by coupling to the solvent bath. Comparison with reactions of CN radicals with alkanes in the gas phase, known to produce HCN with greater C-H stretch and bending mode excitation (up to two and approximately six quanta, respectively), indicates partial damping of the nascent product vibrational motion by the solvent. The transient infrared spectra therefore probe solvent-induced modifications to the reaction free energy surface and chemical dynamics.  相似文献
