A study was carried out in 125 farrow-to-finish pig herds to assess the relationships between pathogens involved in respiratory disorders and to relate these findings to clinical signs of respiratory diseases and pneumonia and pleuritis at slaughter. Clinical examination and sampling were carried out on four different batches in each herd (pigs aged 4, 10, 16 and 22 weeks). Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, swine influenza viruses (SIV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) were detected by serological or PCR tests. Pneumonia-like gross lesions and pleuritis were scored at the slaughterhouse. The results indicate that the percentage of pigs PCR-positive for PCV2 at 4, 10 and 16 weeks old was associated with the percentage of pigs PCR-positive for M. hyopneumoniae at these ages. On the other hand, the percentage of pigs with antibodies against PRRSV at 10, 16 and 22 weeks was positively correlated with the percentage of pigs seropositive for M. hyopneumoniae at 22 weeks, with the percentage of pigs with antibodies against SIV H1N1 and SIV H1N2 and the percentage of pigs sero-positive for A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 2. The findings also indicate that, within the five studied pathogens, M. hyopneumoniae, PRRSV and SIV H1N1 are the major pathogens involved in pneumonia-like gross lesions even though PCV2 may play a role. A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 2, in association with PRRSV, is significantly associated with extensive pleuritis. Respiratory diseases could be significantly reduced by implementing measures including appropriate management practices to control these pathogens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare recoveries from anesthesia of horses placed on a conventional padded stall floor or on a specially designed air pillow. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 409 horses (> 1 year old) that were anesthetized for surgical procedures during a 37-month period. PROCEDURES: By random allocation, horses were allowed to recover from anesthesia in either a foammat-padded recovery stall or an identical recovery stall equipped with a rapidly inflating-deflating air pillow. All recoveries were videotaped for subsequent analysis by an independent evaluator. Times to first movement, first attempt to attain sternal recumbency, attainment of sternal recumbency, first attempt to stand, and successful standing were recorded. The numbers of attempts before achieving sternal recumbency and standing were counted, and scores for quality of standing and overall recovery were assigned. Recovery-related variables were compared between groups. RESULTS: Compared with horses allowed to recover in a conventional manner, horses that recovered from anesthesia on the air pillow had a significantly longer rest period before attempting to attain sternal recumbency and rise to standing. Once the pillow was deflated, horses were able to stand after significantly fewer attempts and the quality of their standing was significantly better. Between the 2 groups of horses, there was no significant difference in overall recovery quality scores. The air pillow and padded floor systems were equally safe. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that use of a rapidly inflating-deflating air pillow promotes a longer period of recumbency and a better quality of standing after anesthesia in horses.  相似文献

The technique of internal fixation of intra-articular fractures of the third phalanx using lag screw interfragmentary compression is described. Three cases are discussed and the successful treatment of infection and osteomyelitis described in one of them. Despite this potential complication internal fixation offers a better prognosis and also a more rapid return to work than non-operative treatments.  相似文献

A 4-year-old thoroughbred stallion with a history of loss of racing form was studied over a period of approximately 7 months. At the initial examination he showed positive T waves in 1 chest lead and wandering of the pacemaker. This was followed by an episode of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which disappeared spontaneously and was replaced by significant T wave changes in all the chest leads. During a period when these changes persisted, there was progressive lengthening of the P wave and the P-R interval. Because the last ECG showed evidence of intra-atrial block, first degree A-V block and T wave changes, the owner was advised that a fluctuating myocarditis was affecting the horse's performance and it was retired to stud. This appears to be the first report of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in Australia, and it demonstrates the value of regular follow-up examinations in horses with initial electrocardiographs showing only minor departures from normal. The case also suggests that when sharp reversals of racing form occur, the possibility of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation being the cause should be kept in mind.  相似文献

Serum samples from 89 cats with serologic evidence of toxoplasmosis were identified by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that detected Toxoplasma gondii -specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) or T. gondii -specific immunoglobulin G (IgG). Concurrent feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection was detected in 36 cats using an ELISA for detection of FIV-specific IgG. The majority of the cats in both the FIV-seropositive and FIV-seronegative groups were male and >5 years of age. FIV-seropositive cats were more likely to have T. gondii IgM titers without IgG ( P > 0.05) or any T. gondii IgM titer ( P > 0.05) than were FIV-seronegative cats. FIV-seronegative cats (1328) had a higher T. gondii IgG geometric mean titer than did FIV-seropositive cats (724) and were more likely to have T. gondii IgG titers 1:2048 than were FIV-seropositive cats ( P > 0.05). Cats with serologic evidence of both T. gondii and FIV infections had persistent T. gondii IgM titers for >12 weeks. Lymphoblast transformation in response to concanavalin A, T. gondii -specific intracellular antigens, and T. gondii -specific secretory antigens was compared in T. gondii seropositive and FIV-seronegative cats, cats with serologic evidence of T. gondii infection alone, and cats with serologic evidence of concurrent FIV and T. gondii infections. Lymphocytes from all but one cat in the FIV-seropositive group responded to concanavalin A. Whereas lymphocytes from FIV-seronegative cats with serologic evidence of toxoplasmosis responded to T. gondii -specific antigens, four of five of the FIV-seropositive cats with concurrent serologic evidence of toxoplasmosis did not.  相似文献

Mastitis was induced in 4 lactating cows by inoculation of Klebsiella pneumoniae (10(7) organisms/ml) via the teat canal. Sterile isotonic saline solution (1 ml) was instilled into designated control quarters via the teat canal. Changes in milk leukotriene B4 and C4 (LTB4, LTC4) concentrations, milk somatic cell counts, and milk bovine serum albumin concentration were monitored over a 24-hour postinoculation period. Milk LTB4 concentration before inoculation in control quarters and quarters later to be infected was 376 +/- 45 and 326 +/- 56 pg/ml of milk, respectively. A significant (P less than 0.05) increase in milk LTB4 concentration in the infected quarters was first observed at postinoculation hour 6, and milk LTB4 concentration in infected quarters generally remained significantly high through postinoculation hour 14. Thereafter, milk LTB4 concentration in infected quarters was not significantly different from the concentration in control quarters. Measurable amounts of LTC4 were not detected in the milk of either control or infected quarters. Milk bovine serum albumin concentration in the infected quarters generally was high throughout the study, as were milk somatic cell counts. The results of this study suggested that LTB4 contributes to the pathogenesis of bovine mastitis.  相似文献

1. In one experiment two strains of choice‐fed broilers were given wheat, either whole or ground, and a balancer diet, either pelleted or as a mash, for 4 weeks. They were compared with broilers given a complete single feed.

2. In a second experiment, the effect of a pelleted or mash balancer, relative feeding trough space for whole wheat and balancer (1:1 or 2:1 with total feeding space constant) and group size (20, 40 or 80 broilers maintained at a constant stocking density) on the diet selection of choice‐fed broilers was examined.

3. Food form had a large effect on diet selection although there was no effect on total food intakes or weight gains. If a mash balancer was provided, the broilers selected a greater proportion of wheat when it was ground rather than whole, but if the balancer was pelleted a greater proportion of wheat tended to be selected when whole wheat was provided.

4. No significant differences in diet selection were observed as a result of differences in the strain of broiler, the relative amounts of feeder space for wheat and balancer or group size.  相似文献

Induction of the microsomal oxidase system by dietary phenobarbital and β-naphthoflavone was examined in three blowflies, Phormia regina (Mg.), Lucilia illustris (Mg.), and Eucalliphora lilica (Walk.). Responses were similar in adults and larvae of all species. Phenobarbital increased cytochrome P-450 levels up to 9-fold and aldrin epoxidase up to 138-fold. Increases in cytochrome P-450 and aldrin epoxidase caused by β-naphthoflavone were minor relative to those produced by phenobarbital. In toxicity experiments with carbaryl and propoxur tolerance was associated with the amount of microsomal oxidase activity. Using piperonyl butoxide to synergize carbaryl and propoxur there was no clear indication for the use of either the synergist ratio or synergist difference as an indicator of microsomal oxidase activity.  相似文献
