Calcareous grasslands are an important habitat for floral and faunal communities in the UK and Europe. Declines due to changes in management, scrub invasion and agricultural improvement have left much of the remnants of this habitat in a degraded and fragmented state. Grazing, by cattle or sheep, is one of the main management practices used to maintain and improve the floral and faunal quality of calcareous grassland. The long-term impacts of different grazing regimes, however, are poorly understood, particularly in terms of the invertebrate communities. This study contrasted the impacts of recently introduced and long-term sheep or cattle grazing on beetle communities present on one of the largest areas of calcareous grassland in Europe, the Salisbury Plain military training Area, UK. No effects of grazing management on beetle abundance, species richness or evenness were found, but plant diversity and overall percentage cover of grasses did influence beetle diversity. Proportions of the total number of individuals and overall species richness within beetle guilds (predatory, phytophagous, flower/seed feeders, root feeders and foliage feeders) were strongly influenced by both the duration and type of grazing animal. At the species level, beetle community structure showed significant differences between ungrazed, long-term cattle and long-term sheep grazing treatments. Changes in plant community structure were found to influence beetle community structure. The significance of these results is discussed in terms of the long-term impacts of grazing on beetle community structure, and the benefits of different grazing regimes for the conservation management of calcareous grasslands. 相似文献

Current global trends in lake dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations suggest a need for tools to more broadly measure
and predict variation in DOC at regional landscape scales. This is particularly true for more remote subalpine and alpine
regions where access is difficult and the minimal levels of anthropogenic watershed disturbance allow these systems to serve
as valuable reference sites for long-term climate change. Here geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing tools
are used to develop simple predictive models that define relationships between watershed variables known to influence lake
DOC concentrations and lake water color in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in Montana and Wyoming, USA. Variables examined
include watershed area, topography, and vegetation cover. The resulting GIS model predicts DOC concentrations at the lake
watershed scale with a high degree of accuracy (R
2 = 0.92; P ≤ 0.001) by including two variables: vegetation coverage (representing sites of organic carbon fixation) and areas of low
slope (0–5%) within the watershed (wetland sites of DOC production). Importantly, this latter variable includes not only surficially
visible wetlands, but “cryptic” subsurface wetlands. Modeling with Advanced Land Imager satellite remote sensing data provided
a weaker relationship with water color and DOC concentrations (R

Fifty‐six days feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of Cirina butyrospermi caterpillar meal (CBM) as protein source in replacement of fish meal (FM) for Clarias gariepinus fingerlings. Six hundred African catfish (initial mean weight = 2.42 ± 0.01 g) were fed with four approximate isonitrogenous (48.97% crude protein), isolipidic (15.85% crude lipid) and isocaloric (21.10 kJg?1) formulated diets, in which CBM progressively replaced FM at 0 (D1), 50 (D2), 75 (D3), 100% (D4) levels. At the end of the trial period, the best growth performance and nutritional utilization were observed in the group of fish fed with D2 and was not significantly different from those fed with D1 (the control diet). The survival rates, which ranged from 85.33% to 90.33%, were not significantly different among fish from the four diet treatments. The proximate whole‐body composition of C. gariepinus fingerlings fed the different diets showed similar moisture and protein contents. However, in contrary to ash which decreased, whole‐body lipid increased significantly when fish fed with diet containing CBM inclusion superior or equal to 75% (D3 and D4). The higher gross profit was obtained with D2 (16.73$), while the lowest was observed with D4 (10.16$). This study demonstrates that 50% of fish meal can successfully be replaced with CBM in C. gariepinus fingerlings diet without a negative impact on growth or feed utilization. A transfer‐function method is proposed to determine transport parameters from solute breakthrough data. The method is based on the assumptions that a linear process governs the transport of solute through soil and that the soil is homogeneous. It needs breakthrough data at two different vertical locations from a pulse input of solute to the soil. The method predicts the response by convoluting the input with the transfer function in the time domain. Solute breakthrough data were measured in unsaturated soil columns by time‐domain reflectometry (TDR). An experimental soil column was placed over a supporting column filled with sandy soil. A constant hanging water table, maintained in the lower column, created suction in the upper column and maintained unsaturated conditions. A solution of calcium chloride (CaCl2) was spread over the soil in the upper column during steady flow of water in the column. Resident concentrations of solute in terms of electrical conductivity were measured at two depths by TDR sensors. We analysed breakthrough curves of CaCl2 in 81 experiments to determine the transport parameters in coarse sand, sandy loam soil and clay loam soil by the transfer‐function method. The transport parameters obtained were compared with those determined by the widely used deterministic equilibrium model of the CXTFIT program. The transfer‐function method provided a better fit between the measured and estimated breakthrough curves in almost all cases and resulted in stable values of the parameters. The method is robust against small errors in measurements. It is a mathematically sound and efficient method for analysing breakthrough data. 相似文献

Cytological and bacteriological results from tracheal fluid samples obtained endoscopically using a telescoping, plugged catheter (TPC) were compared with results from samples collected by percutaneous transtracheal aspiration (PTA). The TPC technique and PTA were performed in random order on 9 healthy Standardbred geldings. Three weeks later the procedures were performed on the same horses in the reverse order. The presence of oropharyngeal contamination was determined by quantitative bacteriology and quantification of squamous epithelial cells (SEC)/ml sample. The relative numbers of macrophages, haemosiderophages, giant cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophils did not differ between techniques. The number of SEC/ml was greater in samples with more colony forming units/ml indicating that quantification of SEC provides evidence of the probable degree of oropharyngeal contamination. Fifteen out of the 18 TPC samples were free of contamination, indicating that the TPC can provide adequate samples for bacteriology. The results also indicate that tracheoscopy sometimes results in oropharyngeal contamination of the trachea, but that this does not affect the results of the TPC sample. 相似文献

Batch-type experiments were used to determine the anion (fluoride, nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate) adsorption and desorption characteristics of an Ultisol from the Piedmont Province of Georgia. The results were best described using ‘initial mass’ isotherms when the initial anion concentration was less than two meq l-1. The Langmuir adsorption maximum for sulfate (initial concentration range of 0.2–20 meq l-1) was 24.4 meq kg-1. Oxalate, acetate, nitrate, fluoride, and phosphate were used as exchangeable ‘counter’ anions to investigate the sulfate retention characteristics of this soil. High concentrations (> one meq l-1) of oxalate, phosphate and fluoride were shown to release sulfate from this soil. However, little sulfate desorption resulted when lower and more environmentally realistic concentrations of competing anions were applied. Application of oxalate revealed that a minimum of 19 meq kg-1 of sulfate has been adsorbed on this soil through natural processes. The Langmuir adsorption maximum suggests that this Ultisol, typical of many B horizons within this region, has a large capacity to adsorb additional inputs of atmospheric sulfate. 相似文献
