RADIOTHERAPY OF CANINE NON-TONSILLAR SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The records of 14 dogs treated with megavoltage radiation for non-tonsillar oral squamous cell carcinoma were reviewed to determine the efficacy of this treatment modality. Total radiation dose was either 48 or 57 Gray (Gy), while dose per fraction was either 3.0 or 4.0 Gy. Median disease free interval and survival were 365 and 450 days, respectively. Median disease free interval was shorter in dogs older than nine years (210 days) as compared with dogs less than or equal to nine years old (470 days), (p < .005). Median survival was shorter in dogs older than nine years (315 days) as compared with dogs less than or equal to nine years old (1080 days), (p < 0.02). Weight, stage, anatomic subsite, intraoral location, duration of disease, prior surgery, and number of radiation fractions did not appear to influence disease free interval or survival. Data presented herein suggest that survival in dogs with non-tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma receiving megavoltage radiation may be longer than that achieved with orthovoltage radiation or surgery. Megavoltage radiation appears to be an effective treatment for non-tonsillar oral squamous cell carcinoma in dogs. Further study is needed to determine the optimal time-dose sched-ule.  相似文献

Antimicrobial efficacy against Lawsonia intracellularis is difficult to evaluate in vitro, thus, the effects of gallium maltolate's (GaM) were investigated in a rabbit model for equine proliferative enteropathy (EPE). Juvenile (5–6‐week‐old) does were infected with 3.0 × 108 L. intracellularis/rabbit and allocated into three groups (= 8). One week postinfection, one group was treated with GaM, 50 mg/kg; one, with doxycycline, 5 mg/kg; and one with a sham‐treatment (control). Feces and blood were collected daily and weekly, respectively, to verify presence of L. intracellularis fecal shedding using qPCR, and seroconversion using immunoperoxidase monolayer assay. Rabbits were sacrificed after 1 week of treatment to collect intestinal tissues focusing on EPE‐affected sections. Intestinal lesions were confirmed via immunohistochemistry. No difference was noted between treatments regarding EPE‐lesions in jejunum (= 0.51), ileum (= 0.74), and cecum (= 0.35), or in L. intracellularis fecal shedding (= 0.64). GaM and doxycycline appear to have similar efficacy against EPE in infected rabbits.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate the relationship between loss of parts of the pinna in rabbits and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (MD). METHODS: A case-control study design was employed. Rabbits with ear lesions were shot on farms in various locations in the South Island of New Zealand. For each case, an attempt was made to obtain a sex and size-matched control rabbit from the same farm on the same day. Serum samples were collected immediately after shooting. The serum samples were tested for RHD titres from 1:lO to 1:640. A selection of affected ears was examined histologically. Odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals were calculated to assess the relationship between ear loss and RHD antibody status at various serological cut-off levels. RESULTS: Affected ears were characterised by firm cartilaginous nodules and ridges, folding of the ear or loss of pinna to form a notch or complete loss of the outer pinna from about 052.0 cm above the intertragic notch. Histological changes in affected ears consisted mostly of focal mineralisation in the auricular cartilage, proliferation of cartilaginous tissue and loss of cartilage. The serological findings showed a significant association between rabbits with ear lesions and elevated RHD titres. CONCLUSION: The loss of the outer pinna in the rabbits under study was due to degenerative and hyperplastic changes in the auricular cartilage with distortion of the pinna, withering and loss of the outer pinna. The serological findings suggests that RHD is a likely factor in the development of the ear lesions.  相似文献

Millions of hectares of rangeland in the western United States have been invaded by annual and woody plants that have increased the role of wildland fire. Altered fire regimes pose significant implications for runoff and erosion. In this paper we synthesize what is known about fire impacts on rangeland hydrology and erosion, and how that knowledge advances understanding of hydrologic risks associated with landscape scale plant community transitions and altered fire regimes. The increased role of wildland fire on western rangeland exposes landscapes to amplified runoff and erosion over short- and long-term windows of time and increases the risk of damage to soil and water resources, property, and human lives during extreme events. Amplified runoff and erosion postfire are a function of storm characteristics and fire-induced changes in site conditions (i.e., ground cover, soil water repellency, aggregate stability, and surface roughness) that define site susceptibility. We suggest that overall postfire hydrologic vulnerability be considered in a probabilistic framework that predicts hydrologic response for a range of potential storms and site susceptibilities and that identifies the hydrologic response magnitudes at which damage to values-at-risk are likely to occur. We identify key knowledge gaps that limit advancement of predictive technologies to address the increased role of wildland fire across rangeland landscapes. Our review of literature suggests quantifying interactions of varying rainfall intensity and key measures of site susceptibility, temporal variability in strength/influence of soil water repellency, and spatial scaling of postfire runoff and erosion remain paramount areas for future research to address hydrologic effects associated with the increased role of wildland fire on western rangelands.  相似文献

We investigated how water and nutrient availability affect radiation-use efficiency (epsilon) and assessed leaf gas exchange as a possible mechanism for shifts in epsilon. We measured aboveground net primary production (ANPP) and annual photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) capture to calculate epsilon as well as leaf-level physiological variables (light-saturated net photosynthesis, Asat; stomatal conductance, gs; leaf internal CO2 concentration, Ci; foliar nitrogen concentration, foliar [N]; and midday leaf water potential, Psileaf) during the second (2001) and third (2002) growing seasons in sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) and sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) stands receiving a factorial combination of irrigation and fertilization at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina. Irrigation and fertilization increased PAR capture (maximum increase 60%) in 2001 and 2002 for both species and annual PAR capture was well correlated with ANPP (mean r2 = 0.77). A decreasing trend in epsilon was observed in non-irrigated stands for sweetgum in 2001 and for sycamore in both years, although this was only significant for sycamore in 2002. Irrigated stands maintained higher gas exchange rates than non-irrigated stands for sweetgum in 2001 and for sycamore in both years, although foliar [N] and Psileaf were generally unaffected. Because Ci decreased in proportion to gs in non-irrigated stands, it appeared that greater stomatal limitation of photosynthesis was associated with decreased Asat. On several measurement dates for sweetgum in 2001 and for sycamore in both years, epsilon was positively correlated with gas exchange variables (Asat, gs, Ci) (r ranged from 0.600 to 0.857). These results indicate that PAR capture is well correlated with ANPP and that gas exchange rates modified by irrigation can influence the conversion of captured light energy to biomass.  相似文献

Heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) produced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) increases bacterial adherence to porcine enterocytes in vitro and enhances small intestinal colonization in swine. Heat-stable enterotoxin-b (STb) is not known to affect colonization; however, through an induction of net fluid accumulation it might reduce bacterial adherence. The relationship between fluid accumulation and bacterial adherence in jejunal loops inoculated with ETEC strains that produce LT, STb, both, or neither toxin was studied. Ligated jejunal loops were constructed in weaned Yorkshire pigs in two independent experiments (Exp. 1, n = 5, 8-week-old; Exp. 2, n = 6, 6–8-week-old). Each pig was inoculated with six F4ac+ E. coli strains: (1) LT+, STb+ parent (WAM2317); (2) STb?estB) mutant (MUN297); (3) MUN297 complemented with STb (MUN298); (4) LT? STb?eltAB ΔestB) mutant (MUN300); (5) MUN300 complemented with LT (MUN301); and (6) 1836-2 (non-enterotoxigenic, wild-type). Pigs were confirmed to be K88 (F4)ab/ac receptor-positive in Exp. 2 by testing for intestinal mucin-type glycoproteins and inferred to be receptor-positive in both Exp. 1 and 2 based on histopathologic evidence of bacterial adherence. Strains that produced STb induced marked fluid accumulation with the response (ml/cm) to WAM2317 and MUN298 significantly greater than that to the other strains (P < 0.0001). Conversely, bacterial adherence scores based on immunohistochemistry and CFU/g of washed mucosa were both lowest in the strains that expressed STb and highest in those that did not. For the two experiments combined, the Pearson correlation coefficient (R) between fluid volume (ml/cm) and log CFU per gram was ?0.57021 (P < 0.0001); R2 = 0.3521 (n = 197). These results support the hypothesis that enterotoxin-induced fluid accumulation flushes progeny organisms into the lumen of the bowel, thereby increasing the likelihood of fecal shedding and transmission of the pathogen to new hosts.  相似文献

The digital elevation model (DEM) is considered by many to be an important base map for a precision farming GIS (Geographic Information System). Previous work has shown that dual-frequency survey grade GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers are capable of rapidly producing accurate positional data from a moving vehicle from which DEM's can be developed. However, this type of GPS receiver is expensive and somewhat difficult to use properly. This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate the potential of using single frequency sub-meter and 2–5 meter horizontal accuracy GPS receivers to enable the farmer to collect multiple passes of GPS data during normal field operations from which DEM's can be developed. The results show that when using a single frequency sub-meter GPS receiver: (1) it is possible to develop a DEM with standard deviation of the elevation accuracy on the order of 0.12–0.14 m, (2) in order to collect data with this level of elevation accuracy, data should only be collected when the GDOP (Geometric Dilution Of Precision) is less than 5.0, (3) at least 10 passes of data with appropriate data averaging is required to produce this level of elevation accuracy. The results also indicate that the vertical error associated with a 2–5 meter horizontal accuracy GPS receiver is such that it is not recommended for use in collecting data to develop DEM's in this application.  相似文献
