Oral eosinophilic granulomas were diagnosed in 16 tigers (Panthera tigris). All lesions were located on the hard or soft palate and typically consisted of flat or slightly raised circular ulcers. Histologic features of these lesions were essentially identical to those seen in oral eosinophilic granulomas of domestic cats and dogs. No clinical signs were noted in eight cases, though various degrees of inappetence, excessive salivation, and dysphagia were noted in the other eight tigers. Six cases were not treated. Treatment for the remaining 10 cases centered on corticosteroids and additional treatments included surgical removal, cryotherapy, antibiotics, and chlorpheniramine. Treatment with corticosteroids did appear to be effective in some cases, though lesions would worsen after cessation of therapy and no cases were cured. In addition, three cases developed complications possibly related to this corticosteroid therapy. The etiology of these lesions remains unknown, though an underlying allergic condition is likely.  相似文献

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase isoenzymes in the ovine intestinal nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis was compared with that in chronically infected and worm-free lambs. Total acetylcholinesterase activity in homogenates of adult T colubriformis was resolved into five isoenzyme peaks following gel electrophoresis and specific esterase staining. Two isoenzymes with electrophoretic mobilities similar to those present in adult worm homogenates were detected in mucosal homogenates and plasma extracts from all of six sheep chronically infected with T colubriformis, but not in similar preparations from two uninfected animals.  相似文献

High midday temperatures can depress net photosynthesis. We investigated possible mechanisms underlying this phenomenon in leaves of Eperua grandiflora (Aubl.) Benth. saplings. This tropical tree establishes in small gaps in the rainforest canopy where direct sunlight can raise midday temperatures markedly. We simulated this microclimate in a growth chamber by varying air temperature between 28 and 38 degrees C at constant vapor pressure. A decrease in stomatal conductance in response to an increase in leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (deltaW) caused by an increase in leaf temperature (Tleaf) was the principal reason for the decrease in net photosynthesis between 28 and 33 degrees C. Net photosynthesis decreased further between 33 and 38 degrees C. Direct effects on mesophyll functioning and indirect effects through deltaW were of similar magnitude in this temperature range. Mitochondrial respiration during photosynthesis was insensitive to Tleaf over the investigated temperature range; it thus did not contribute to midday depression of net photosynthesis. Internal conductance for CO2 diffusion in the leaf, estimated by combined gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, decreased slightly with increasing Tleaf. However, the decrease in photosynthetic rate with increasing Tleaf was larger and thus the difference in CO2 partial pressure between the substomatal cavity and chloroplast was smaller, leading to the conclusion that this factor was not causally involved in midday depression. Carboxylation capacity inferred from the CO2 response of photosynthesis increased between 28 and 33 degrees C, but remained unchanged between 33 and 38 degrees C. Increased oxygenation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate relative to its carboxylation and the concomitant increase in photorespiration with increasing Tleaf were thus not compensated by an increase in carboxylation capacity over the higher temperature range. This was the principal reason for the negative effect of high midday temperatures on mesophyll functioning.  相似文献

The magnitude of hydraulic redistribution of soil water by roots and its impact on soil water balance were estimated by monitoring time courses of soil water status at multiple depths and root sap flow under drought conditions in a dry ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws) ecosystem and in a moist Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) ecosystem. The fate of deuterated water applied to small plots to create a strong horizontal soil water potential gradient was also monitored to assess the potential for horizontal redistribution of water and utilization of redistributed water by co-occurring shallow-rooted plants. In a 20-year-old Douglas-fir stand, approximately 28% of the water removed daily from the upper 2 m of soil was replaced by nocturnal hydraulic redistribution during late August. In an old-growth ponderosa pine stand, approximately 35% of the total daily water utilization from the upper 2 m of soil appeared to be replaced by hydraulic redistribution during July and August. By late September, hydraulic redistribution in the ponderosa pine stand was no longer apparent, even though total water use from the upper 2 m of soil was nearly identical to that observed earlier. Based on these results, hydraulic redistribution would allow 21 and 16 additional days of stored water to remain in the upper soil horizons in the ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir stands, respectively, after a 60-day drought. At both sites, localized applications of deuterated water induced strong reversal of root sap flow and caused soil water content to cease declining or even temporarily increase at locations too distant from the site of water application to have been influenced by movement of water through the soil without facilitation by roots. Xylem water deuterium values of ponderosa pine seedlings suggested utilization of redistributed water. Therefore, hydraulic redistribution may enhance seedling survival and maintain overstory transpiration during summer drought. These first approximations of the extent of hydraulic redistribution in these ecosystems suggest that it is likely to be an important process in both wet and dry forests of the Pacific Northwest.  相似文献

We investigated 2 outbreaks of osteomalacia as a result of phosphorus (P) deficiency in herds of lactating beef cows grazing subtropical native pastures in Uruguay. Cows exhibited pica, difficulty to stand and walk, rib fractures, and body weight loss even with adequate forage availability. Osteopenia and severe osteomalacia were observed on gross and histologic examination. The concentrations of bicarbonate-extractable P in soil (4.0, 4.1 mg P/kg), total P in pasture (0.9, 1.1 g P/kg), inorganic P in serum (1.0, 0.71 mmol P/L), and P in bone (73 mg P/mL) were all low. Although injectable and mineral salt supplements provided additional P in both outbreaks, these supplementary amounts were insufficient to prevent P deficiency. The P ingested by the cows from the pasture and supplements would have provided 20–55% of their daily P requirements of ~21 g P/d. Osteomalacia occurred in cattle at the 2 ranches as a result of severe P deficiency in the soil and forage, and inadequate P supplementation. Following diagnosis, control of P deficiency in beef cattle requires estimation of the amount of pasture P ingested and provision of sufficient additional supplementary P to meet the animals’ requirements.  相似文献
