- There is concern across the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) region that a consideration of vulnerable components and the wider support mechanisms underpinning benthic marine ecosystems may be lacking from the process of marine protected area (MPA) designation, management and monitoring.
- In this study, MPAs across six European ecoregions were assessed from a benthic ecology perspective. The study included 102 MPAs, designated by 10 countries, and focused on three aspects regarding the role of the benthos in: (i) the designation of MPAs; (ii) the management measures used in MPAs; and (iii) the monitoring and assessment of MPAs.
- Qualitative entries to a questionnaire based on an existing framework (EU project ‘Monitoring Evaluation of Spatially Managed Areas’, (MESMA) were collected by 19 benthic experts of the ICES Benthic Ecology Working Group. A pedigree matrix was used to apply a numerical scale (score) to these entries.
- The results showed clear differences in scores between ecoregions and between criteria. The designation‐phase criteria generally achieved higher scores than the implementation‐phase criteria. Poor designation‐phase scores were generally reiterated in the implementation‐phase scores, such as scores for assessment and monitoring.
- Over 70% of the MPA case studies were found to consider the benthos to some extent during selection and designation; however, this was not followed up with appropriate management measures and good practice during the implementation phase.
- Poor spatial and temporal coverage of monitoring and ineffective indicators is unlikely to pick up changes caused by management measures in the MPA. There is concern that without adequate monitoring and adaptive management frameworks, the MPAs will be compromised. Also, there could be an increased likelihood that, with regard to the benthos, they will fail to meet their conservation objectives.
- This assessment was successful in highlighting issues related to the representation and protection of the benthos in MPAs and where changes need to be made, such as expanding the characterization and monitoring of benthic species or habitats of interest. These issues could be attributable to an ongoing process and/or an indication that some MPAs only have ‘paper protection’.

Glucose metabolism was measured during two consecutive years, 4 weeks postpartum, in a total of 36 yearling female mink, fitted with jugular vein catheters and raising litters of six to seven kits. The dams were fed ad libitum from parturition on diets with different ratios of metabolizable energy (ME) derived from protein:fat:carbohydrates (experiment 1: 61:37:2, 46:37:17, 31:37:32; experiment 2: 61:38:1, 47:52:1, 33:66:1). After 3 h fasting the dams were fed 210 kJ ME of the experimental diets. Two hours postprandially a single dose of 50 w Ci U- 14 C- and 2- 3 H-labelled glucose was administered to each dam and blood samples were drawn 5, 10, 20, 30, 45 and 60 min after the tracer administration. Glucose turnover rates were 4-5% min -1 in all dams, and the approximate daily glucose flux was 12-17 g day -1 ; however, these were not significantly affected by dietary treatment. In conclusion, the mink is able both to synthesize large amounts of glucose de novo and to utilize high levels of dietary digestible carbohydrates, and thereby to tolerate large variations in dietary carbohydrate supply. 相似文献

The frequency and origin of oilseed rape volunteers in organic row and broadcast-sown oilseed rape fields was evaluated using DNA markers (ISSR) for analysis of potential volunteers in nine organic oilseed rape fields with different history. Using the software AFLPOP, the potential volunteers were assigned to variety by comparing their ISSR fingerprints with those of present and previous varieties. Results showed that two of the five row-sown fields, had high numbers of volunteer in the row (5 and 9 volunteers m?2), and as inter-row volunteers were also present (0.9 and 3.6 volunteers m?2), the recommended inter-row hoeing should not be neglected. Potential volunteers were also identified in the broadcast-sown fields, but their identity could not be proven. In a scenario where GM oilseed rape is cultivated previous to the organic oilseed rape, the present results indicate that the frequency of GM volunteers would exceed the threshold of 0.9%, and thus GM labelling would be demanded. Some of the volunteers belonged to varieties cultivated 8–11 years previously, indicating a long persistence of volunteer populations. Research into the influence of environmental variables on the behaviour of Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), and hence catch rates, dates back to the 1960s (e.g., Höglund and Dybern, Diurnal and seasonal variations in the catch‐composition of Nephrops norvegicus (L.) at the Swedish west coast. ICES CM 1965/I46; Simpson, Variations in the catches of Nephrops norvegicus at different times of day and night. However, the use of fishery‐dependent data in identifying influential factors is relatively limited and only includes a number of papers on a limited dataset (e.g., Redant and De Clark, Diurnal variations in CPUE and length composition of the catches in a Nephrops directed fishery in the Central North Sea. Catch rates were modelled using Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) and considered a range of response variables, including depth, temperature, current speed, season, moon phase and time of day. Post-anesthetic holter monitoring was performed in 2 patient groups in order to compare the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias as a result of different anesthetic protocols. The 2 groups differed in their anesthetic protocol. Both groups received levomethadone as pre-anesthetic. The dogs in group A (n = 30) additionally received diazepam, the dogs in group B (n = 30) received propofol instead. Anesthesia was maintained by isoflurane in group A and a propofol constant rate infusion in group B. In each patient 2 holter monitorings were performed. The first recording began directly after anesthesia. As a comparison a second recording was performed on the 5th post-operative day. The recorded number of arrhythmias was low and no statistical difference was demonstrated between the 2 patient groups. 相似文献

Endothelium-dependent (nitric oxide [NO]-mediated) vasodilation is impaired in humans with heart failure. This dysfunction is an important therapeutic target. The plasma concentration of the NO metabolites nitrate and nitrite (collectively referred to as NOx) is a measure of whole-body NO production, provided that the dietary intake of the ions is low. Fifty clinically healthy dogs older than I year (median 5.0 years; interquartile interval 2.6-8.2 years) were studied, including 9 controls of various breeds, 23 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs) with no or minimal mitral regurgitation (MR), 9 CKCSs with mild MR (regurgitant jet occupying 15-50% of the left atrial area), and 9 CKCS with moderate to severe MR (jet >50%) due to myxomatous valve disease. None of the dogs received medication. The dogs were given NOx-free water and a diet with a low concentration of NOx for 96 hours before blood sampling. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that dog group, but not gender, age, serum creatinine concentration, and platelet count, was associated with NOx concentrations. Control dogs had the same NOx concentration (median 20.0 microM; interquartile interval 15.1-25.5 microM) as CKCSs without MR (median 18.7 microM; interquartile interval 15.5-25.9 microM). Compared to CKCSs without MR, the NOx concentration was lower in CKCSs with mild (median 12.9 microM; interquartile interval 11.0-13.5 microM; P = .04) and moderate to severe (median 11.2 microM; interquartile interval 6.9-17.1 microM; P = .02) MR. In conclusion, CKCSs with mild to severe, clinically silent MR have decreased plasma NOx concentrations, suggesting that endothelial dysfunction develops early in the course of developing MR in dogs. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the intraobserver variation of various echocardiographic measures in standardbred trotters. Serial echocardiographic examinations were carried out on eight standardbred mares by one ultrasonographer for 5 separate days. During each examination, five nonconsecutive cardiac cycles (frames) were recorded and an average obtained for each individual measure. Various echocardiographic measures were obtained by use of two-dimensional (2-D), M-mode, color flow Doppler and pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography. The total variation in the echocardiographic measurements was split into three levels: the variation between horses, the day-to-day variation within individual horses, and finally the variation within horse on the same day of examination (intercardiac cycle variation). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated for each measure. The ICC represents the variability of the measurements because of differences between the horses. In general the 2-D, M-mode and color flow Doppler measures had higher ICC values (ICC from 0.63 to 0.95) than the pulsed wave Doppler measures (ICC from 0.24 to 0.46), and the former measures were more repeatable than the pulsed wave measures. Exceptions to that were left ventricular free wall in diastole, the pulmonary artery in systole and the left ventricular mass, which all had low repeatability (ICC from 0.22 to 0.49). The results were used to calculate the relative differences that must be detected to diagnose a statistically significant change between two measurements in an individual horse. Differences from 4.2% to 21.8% must be achieved to document significant changes between serial measurements. A general tendency is that the color flow and pulsed wave Doppler measures require a larger relative difference (11.4-21.8%) between the measures to point out statistically significant cardiac changes than the 2-D and M-mode measures (4.2-13.9%). 相似文献
