Gall bladder necrosis and rupture are life‐threatening conditions in dogs requiring surgical intervention and early diagnosis is essential. Human patients with suspected gall bladder necrosis/rupture are commonly evaluated with contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), however this procedure has not been described in dogs with suspected gall bladder necrosis/rupture. In a prospective diagnostic cohort study, CEUS (using SonoVue contrast medium) was performed in 93 dogs with gallbladder lesions identified by abdominal conventional ultrasonography. Necrosis/rupture was identified by CEUS as a focal lack of enhancement of the gallbladder wall. Dogs with positive CEUS finding for necrosis/rupture (complete lack of regional wall enhancement) underwent immediate surgery as did dogs with other biliary disorders requiring surgery. Dogs with negative CEUS findings or those not requiring surgery were managed medically. In cases undergoing surgery, necrosis/rupture was confirmed intraoperatively (and via histopathology). Absence of necrosis/rupture was confirmed either intraoperatively (via histopathology) or was assumed to be absent by complete recovery with medical management. Forty‐nine dogs underwent surgery and cholecystectomy: 24 had necrosis/rupture. CEUS was more accurate (100% sensitive and specific) in diagnosing gallbladder wall necrosis/rupture than conventional ultrasonography (75% sensitive and 81% specific) (P < 0.03). In conclusion, CEUS provides accurate characterization of gallbladder wall integrity that can impact decisions regarding clinical management, either surgical or medical.  相似文献

BACKGROUND

Incompatible insect technique (IIT) is a population suppression approach based on the release of males with manipulated Wolbachia infection inducing egg inviability in wild females. We here present results of multiple field releases of incompatible ARwP males carried out in 2019 in a 2.7-ha green area within urban Rome (Italy) to assess the effect on Aedes albopictus egg viability. Data are compared with results obtained in 2018, when the approach was tested for the first time in Europe.

RESULTS

An average of 4674 ARwP males were released weekly for 7 weeks, resulting in a mean ARwP:wild male ratio of 1.1:1 (versus 0.7:1 in 2018). Egg-viability dynamics in ovitraps significantly varied between treated and control sites, with an estimated overall reduction of 35% (versus 15% in 2018). The estimated proportion of females classified as mated with ARwP males was 41.8% and the viability rate of eggs laid by these females (9.5%) was on average significantly lower than that of females only mated with wild males (87.8%); however, high variability in fertility was observed. Values of ARwP male competitiveness were 0.36 and 0.73 based on the overall viability rate of eggs in ovitraps and on female fertility, respectively; thus, well above the conventional 0.2 threshold for an effective suppressive impact in the field.

CONCLUSIONS

Results further support the potential of IIT as a tool to contribute to Ae. albopictus control in the urban context, stressing the need for larger field trials to evaluate the cost-efficacy of the approach in temperate regions. © 2023 The Authors. Macrophage aggregate (MA) morphometry and pigment composition are believed to be dependent on the species, age, and health status of the fish. The aim of this study was to characterize a "normal" morphometry baseline of spleen and kidney MAs in blue gourami Trichogaster trichopterus and freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare. Three size-classes of clinically normal fish were analyzed. Blue gourami and freshwater angelfish were obtained from three local ornamental fish farms; for each size-class, 10 fish from each farm were analyzed. Hematoxylin- and eosin-stained tissue sections were analyzed by light microscopy at 100x magnification and an image analysis program. The percentage of tissue occupied by MAs, MA size, and MA number were calculated on three arbitrarily selected fields of view from each spleen and kidney. In clinically normal blue gourami, increases in the percentage of tissue occupied by MAs and in MA size were associated with an increase in fish size, but in clinically normal angelfish no correlation was observed. Furthermore, in angelfish, a high variability in MA morphometry was observed, even among fish from the same sample group. In both species, a significant difference in the value of the morphometric parameters was observed among farms. Because iridoviruses inhibit macrophage activity and (possibly) proliferation, MAs in 25 clinical cases of iridovirus-infected blue gourami were analyzed. Preliminary data indicate that in iridovirus-infected blue gourami, there is a decrease in MA size and MA number compared with those of healthy fish.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation has been generally regarded detrimental to the persistence of many species, especially those with limited dispersal abilities. Yet, when exactly habitat elements become functionally disconnected very much depends on the dispersal ability of a species in combination with the landscape’s composition in which it occurs. Surprisingly, for many small and ground-walking generalists knowledge at what spatial scale and to what extent landscape structure affects dispersal is very scarce. Because it is flightless, the bush cricket Pholidoptera griseoaptera may be regarded susceptible to fragmentation. We applied habitat occupancy surveys, population genetic analyses and movement modelling to investigate the performance of P. griseoaptera in an agricultural mosaic landscape with suitable habitat patches of varying size and isolation. Despite its presumed dispersal limitation we could show that P. griseoaptera occupied the majority of suitable habitats, including small and isolated patches, showed a very low and non-significant genetic differentiation (F ST = 0.0072) and, in the model, managed to colonize around 73% of all suitable habitat patches within one generation under weak and strong landscape-effect scenarios. We conclude that P. griseoaptera possesses the behavioural attributes (frequent inter-patch dispersal) necessary to persist in this landscape characterized by a patchy distribution of habitat elements. Yet, sound recommendations to landscape planning and conservation require more research to determine whether this represents a general behaviour of the species or a behavioural adaptation to this particular landscape.  相似文献

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) were extracted from two different varieties of melon ( Cucumis melo L. cantalupensis cv. Charentais and C. melo L. inodorus cv. Amarillo) and characterized using reliable spectrophotometric methods. In both cases the enzymes followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics, showing different values of kinetics parameters between the two cultivars: K m = 7.18 +/- 0.70 mM ('Charentais') and 6.66 +/- 0.20 mM ('Amarillo') mM; V max = 7.93 +/- 0.35 units/min ('Charentais') and 13.82 +/- 0.37 units/min ('Amarillo'), relative to PPO; K m = 24.0 +/- 2.10 mM ('Charentais') and 5.05 +/- 0.19 mM ('Amarillo') mM; V max = 344.83 +/- 10.32 units/min ('Charentais') and 80.64 +/- 2.01 units/min ('Amarillo'), relative to POD. Optimum pH for PPO was 7.0 for 'Charentais' and 7.5 for 'Amarillo, whereas it was 4.5 for both cultivars relative to POD. Melon PPO had maximum activity at 60 degrees C in both 'Charentais' and 'Amarillo' cultivars, whereas POD maximum activity was found at 45 degrees C in 'Charentais' and at 25 degrees C in 'Amarillo'. POD from both cultivars showed higher thermolability compared with PPO, losing >90% of relative activity after only 5 min of incubation at 70 degrees C. POD's activation energy was much higher than that of PPO (Delta E (#) = 86.3 and 160.6 kJ mol (-1) for 'Charentais' and 'Amarillo', respectively). PPO and POD activities from both cultivars showed a decreasing pattern as sugar concentration in the assay medium increased, except in POD extract from 'Charentais', which maintained its activity in the presence of high d-glucose concentration (up to 5 M). Changes in L*, a*, b*, chroma, and hue angle values were chosen to describe the browning development in the samples during storage at 5 degrees C. A slight decrease in L* value and a more marked reduction of a* value were noted in both cultivars above all at the end of storage period. POD activity during storage at 5 degrees C was highly correlated with changes of parameters a*, b*, chroma, and hue angle ( r (2) from 0.82 to 0.97) for cultivar 'Charentais'. According to these results, only POD activity seemed to be involved in browning of minimally processed melon.  相似文献

Human milk is a complex biological fluid that provides not only primary nourishment for infants but also protection against pathogens and influences their metabolic, immunologic, and even cognitive development. The presence of oligosaccharides in remarkable abundance in human milk has been associated to provide diverse biological functions including directing the development of an infant's intestinal microflora and immune system. Recent advances in analytical tools offer invaluable insights in understanding the specific functions and health benefits these biomolecules impart to infants. Oligosaccharides in human milk samples obtained from five different individual donors over the course of a 3 month lactation period were isolated and analyzed using HPLC-Chip/TOF-MS technology. The levels and compositions of oligosaccharides in human milk were investigated from five individual donors. Comparison of HPLC-Chip/TOF-MS oligosaccharides profiles revealed heterogeneity among multiple individuals with no significant variations at different stages of lactation within individual donors.  相似文献

Imbalanced nutrient management has caused soil phosphorus (P) to become an environmental rather an agronomic problem in more economically developed countries. This subject has been the topic of numerous journal special issues, conferences, and reviews but we consider yet another review of this subject is necessary with the main target of providing a point of view on nonpoint transfer from soils and control strategies for an improved environmental management of P. This review considers the causes of the excessive P transfer from soil to surface water in Europe and the scientific knowledge necessary to develop control strategies.  相似文献

An analytical procedure to detect N-(3-ethylsulfonyl-2-pyridinyl)-4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyridineamine, a degradation product deriving from the hydrolysis of rimsulfuron in soil, has been developed. The analytical standard was prepared by basic hydrolysis of rimsulfuron at pH 9 and purification on a silica gel chromatographic column. The compound obtained was stable at high temperature, thus enabling determination by gas chromatographic analysis. Soil samples were extracted with acetonitrile, purified with a SPE C18 cartridge and analysed using both nitrogen phosphorus (NPD) and mass spectrometer detectors. The analytical procedure described proved to be sensitive and reproducible. Recoveries varied from 84 to 90%. The limit of sensitivity was 0·001 mg kg-1. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献
