In Switzerland, the incidence of equine botulism and acute pasture myodystrophy have remarkably increased in the last five years. Equine fodder-borne botulism in Europe is most likely caused by Clostridium botulinum types C and D that produce the toxins BoNT/C and BoNT/D. Horses showing signs suggestive of botulism (muscle weakness and tremors, reduced tongue tone, slow chewing, salivation and difficulties swallowing, drooping eyelids, mydriasis), especially patients that have fed on suspect fodder (mostly haylage), must be treated with anti-serum as soon as possible. They also need intensive care, which is often difficult to provide and always expensive in the face of a guarded to poor prognosis. Therefore, prevention (high standards of forage quality and vaccination) is all the more important. Pasture myodystrophy is an acute disease with signs of rhabdomyolysis and lethality rate over 90%. It affects grazing horses under frosty, windy and rainy conditions. Preliminary results indicate that Clostridium sordellii and Clostridium bifermentans producing lethal toxin may play a role in pasture myodystrophy. Our efforts concentrate on developing a new subunit vaccine for equine botulism and understanding the ethiology and pathogenesis of pasture myodystrophy with the goal of improving prevention against these highly fatal diseases that present a significant risk to our horse population.  相似文献

Trilostane, a 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase inhibitor, has been used successfully over the last few years for the treatment of canine pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. In a prospective study of 19 dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism, the adrenal glands were measured before and at least 6 months after initiation of trilostane therapy. Right adrenal gland length and caudal pole thickness and left adrenal gland caudal pole thickness increased significantly (p < or = 0.05); there was no significant change in left adrenal gland length. Enlargement of adrenal glands during trilostane therapy may occur as a result of suppression of the negative feedback mechanism affecting cortisol production.  相似文献

A total of 657 cattle from three different herds were tested for the presence of specific antibodies against EBL antigens by means of the immunodiffusion test and the results compared with the classification according to the lymphocyte counts. All animals with pathologically raised lymphocyte counts showed a positive immunodiffusion test reaction. In the majority of these both antigens, 'p24' and 'gp', gave positive results; in a smaller number antibodies against the gp antigen only were detected, but never against the p24 antigen only. It is concluded that for field testing programmes the use of the gp antigen is sufficient. In future experiments, however, both antigens should be employed, because the lack of one of them might perhaps prove to be correlated with the future course of the disease. The absence of specific antibodies, together with a normal number of lymphocytes, in young animals should, however, not lead to the conclusion that they are free of the disease.  相似文献

The effects of an inactivated strain of Aujeszky's disease vaccine in cattle were investigated. It has not been possible to use vaccines licensed for use in pigs successfully in cattle even though cattle develop neutralizing antibodies to these vaccines. The addition of zinc compounds to the vaccines resulted in protection in cattle. The basis for the use of zinc is discussed. A mutant based vaccine was effective following local administration, but was not when administered parenterally. Anti-prostaglandin was not effective either, despite its successful use in sheep when administered with BHV1. The vaccine presents a prospect for immunising dogs and cats, and the addition of zinc compounds to other drugs and inducers is discussed.  相似文献

It was the aim of the study to get an overview about spectrum and incidence of pathological aberrations in hearts and proximal vessels of psittacines which are kept in captivity in Germany. 107 psittacines which had been sent for routine necroscopy were examined especially for evidence of pathological alterations of the heart and/or the proximal vessels. In 36.4% of these birds macroscopic alterations could be verified. 99.0% of all hearts examined resp. proximal vessels showed at least mild histological alterations. This study allocates that especially noninfectious heart disease is of markedly importance in psittacines and that their evidence is much higher than it might be suspected on the basis of publications.  相似文献
