Indirect sensor-based measurements have made on-the-go by-plant recognition possible. This in turn has enabled high resolution by-plant management. The objective of this study was to estimate final grain yield of each corn (Zea mays L.) plant by collecting the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), plant height, and distance between plants at the 8-leaf growth stage (V8). The NDVI readings were collected every 1.2 cm in rows 15 to 30 m in length, and average NDVI per plant was calculated by assuming each plant occupied half the distance between it and its neighbors and calculating an average NDVI value within that respective area. First, an equation was developed to calculate the distance occupied by each plant. Then plant height was used in an equation to estimate competition among plants. A combined model employing plant height, area occupied, and NDVI were used to successfully predict by-plant corn grain yields at V8.  相似文献

Continuous use of organic and inorganic fertilizers influences soil physical and chemical properties. Stored samples from the last 24 years of the Magruder Plots were analyzed to document changes in soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and soil pH. Since 1947, the same six treatments have been evaluated. Treatments included the use of cattle manure, inorganic nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and lime (L). Each year, a composite surface soil sample (0–15 cm) was taken in each plot, air-dried at ambient temperature, ground to pass a 2 mm sieve, and stored at room temperature, 25°C. Averaged over 24 years’ the manure plots resulted in the highest SOC and TN. Manure application maintained SOC at 0.92 and adequate soil pH (>6.0). The use of commercial fertilizers lowered soil pH over time but had higher yields compared to the manure plot.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are two of the most limiting nutrients for crop production. Because of this, continued interest focuses on improving N‐and P‐use efficiency. Spectral radiance measurements were evaluated to identify optimum wavelengths for dual detection of N and P status in bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.). A factorial arrangement of treatments (0, 112, 224, and 336 kg N ha‐1 and 0,29, and 58 kg P ha‐1) was applied to an established bermudagrass pasture for further study using a randomized complete block design. A wide range of spectral radiance measurements (276–831 nm) was obtained from each plot using a PSD 1000 Ocean Optics fiber optic spectrometer. The resulting spectra were partitioned into 10‐nm bands. Added indices were generated to test for correlation of N and P content with spectral radiance. The 435‐nm band (430–440 nm) was found to be independent of N and P treatment, and as a covariate, significantly decreased residual error. Using 435 nm as a covariate, it was found that biomass, N uptake, P uptake, and N concentration could be predicted using 695/405. No index reliably predicted bermudagrass forage P concentration. Spectral radiance has the potential to be used for predicting N and P nutrient status, but further work is needed to document response in different environments.  相似文献

The beneficial effect of sewage sludge in crop production has been demonstrated, but there is concern regarding its contribution to nitrate (NO3) leaching. The objectives of this study were to compare nitrogen (N) rates of sewage sludge and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) on soil profile (0–180 cm), inorganic N [ammonium nitrate (NH4‐N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3‐N)] accumulation, yield, and N uptake in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). One field experiment was established in 1993 that evaluated six N rates (0 to 540 kg·ha‐1·yr‐1) as dry anaerobically digested sewage sludge and ammonium nitrate. Lime application in 1993 (4.48 Mg ha‐1) with 540 kg N ha‐1·yr‐1 was also evaluated. A laboratory incubation study was included to simulate N mineralization from sewage sludge applied at rates of 45, 180, and 540 kg N ha‐1·yr‐1. Treatments did not affect surface soil (0–30 cm) pH, organic carbon (C), and total N following the first (1994) and second (1995) harvest. Soil profile inorganic N accumulation increased when ≥270 kg N ha‐1 was applied as ammonium nitrate. Less soil profile inorganic N accumulation was detected when lime was applied. In general, wheat yields and N uptake increased linearly with applied N as sewage sludge, while wheat yields and N uptake peaked at 270 kg N ha‐1 when N was applied as ammonium nitrate. Lime did not affect yields or N uptake. Fertilizer N immobilization was expected to be high at this site where wheat was produced for the first time in over 10 years (previously in native bermudagrass). Estimated N use efficiency using sewage sludge in grain production was 20% (average of two harvests) compared to ammonium nitrate. Estimated plant N recovery was 17% for sewage sludge and 27% for ammonium nitrate.  相似文献

In this study, 24 years (1990–2013) of data from a long-term experiment, in Stillwater, Oklahoma (OK), were used to determine the effect of beef manure on soil test phosphorus (STP), soil organic carbon (SOC), and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield. Beef manure was applied every 4 years at a rate of 269 kg nitrogen (N) ha?1, while inorganic fertilizers were applied annually at 67 kg N ha?1, 14.6 kg phosphorus (P) ha?1, and 27.8 kg potassium (K) ha?1 for N, P, and K, respectively. Averaged across years, application of beef manure, and inorganic P maintained STP above 38 mg kg?1 of Mehlich-3 extractable P, a level that is far beyond crop requirements. A more rapid decline in SOC was observed in the check plot compared to the manure-treated plot. This study shows that the application of animal manure is a viable option to maintaining SOC levels, while also optimizing grain yield.  相似文献

We hypothesized that veterinarians and veterinary students may lack key knowledge about pulse oximetry, which may result in this type of patient monitor not being used on appropriate patient populations or to its full capabilities. A questionnaire was developed to assess an individual's knowledge and understanding of pulse oximetry. Residents and specialists in anesthesiology and critical care at several academic institutions were surveyed first to assess the questionnaire for clarity and to serve as a control group. General veterinary practitioners (GPs) attending continuing education courses at the University of Georgia were surveyed over a 24-month period. Students entering their senior year anesthesiology rotation at the University of Georgia were also surveyed. Residents and specialists (69% correct responses) scored significantly higher than senior students (46%), who scored significantly higher than GPs (34%). Only 15% of GPs and 21% of senior students reported that they had received training in pulse oximetry in school. Those who had received training scored significantly higher than those who did not. Many GPs did not report using a pulse oximeter on their critical patients under anesthesia, a group that would be expected to benefit from its use. Veterinarians have a poor understanding about how pulse oximetry works, the information provided by pulse oximetry, and how to best apply it to their patients. Furthermore, the respondents did not use pulse oximeters in a manner that would derive the most information and result in the greatest benefit to the patient relative to the cost of the instrument. Didactic training in veterinary curricula and during continuing education opportunities continues to be necessary in order to produce veterinarians, who have an understanding of the technologies available that can be used to improve patient care.  相似文献
