Functional roles of Schoenoplectus californicus, giant bulrush, were evaluated in an 3.2 ha (8-acre) constructed wetland treatment system receiving copper-contaminated water. The constructed wetland used in this research was designed to decrease bioavailable copper concentrations in a wastestream and eliminate associated toxicity to downstream biota by exploiting the thermodynamic processes responsible for copper speciation. This was achieved by integrating carbon, sulfur and copper biogeochemical cycles. In this system, S. californicus, which represents an integral part of the carbon cycle, provides a physical, chemical and biological role in removing metals from the aqueous phase. The specific contributions of S. californicus in this system are to provide a sustainable carbon source for removal of copper by (1) provision of an organic ligand for sorption of copper entering the system, (2) production of organic ligands through growth of S. californicus, (3) accretion of organic ligands over time due to decomposition of S. californicus detritus, and (4) use of organic carbon as an energy source for dissimilatory sulfate production. Shoots and roots of viable S. californicus sorbed 0.88% and 5.88%, respectively, of copper entering the system. The half-life of S. californicus detritus in the constructed wetland system was approximately 184 d, indicating that sufficient detritus will accrete over time, providing binding sites for copper and an energy source for bacterial metabolic processes that contribute to copper immobilization in wetland systems. 相似文献

Clostridium difficile is widely known as a cause of disease in humans, and has emerged as an important problem in neonatal swine. No commercial product is available for immunoprophylaxis of C. difficile-associated disease, but success in preventing experimental infections in hamsters by use of nontoxigenic strains to competitively exclude toxigenic strains led us to try this method in neonatal pigs. Spores were administered orally to newborn pigs or were sprayed onto perineum and teats of dams. Significantly more piglets were weaned among litters receiving spores orally, and average weaning weights were significantly higher for both treatment groups than for controls. Toxins A and B were detected in 44.8% of litters and 16.5% of piglets born to sprayed sows and 58.3% of litters and 15.4% of piglets in the control group. However, toxins were detected in only 13.8% of litters and 3.4% of piglets given spores orally. These data support a contention that precolonization by a nontoxigenic strain can ameliorate the pre-weaning growth retardation associated with C. difficile infection in piglets. 相似文献

Extinction of populations from anthropogenic forces rarely has a single cause. Instead, population declines result from a variety of factors, including habitat loss, inbreeding depression, disease, and climate change. These impacts often have synergistic effects that can lead to rapid decline in isolated populations, but case studies documenting such processes are rare. Here, we describe the recent decline of the last known population of timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) in the state of New Hampshire. We used polymorphic nuclear DNA markers to compare genetic diversity of this population to other populations in the region that are not isolated. We also compare results from ongoing field monitoring of these populations. Genetic analyses reveal that the New Hampshire population lacks genetic diversity and exhibits signs of a recent bottleneck. New Hampshire snakes also exhibited high levels of morphological abnormalities (unique piebald coloration, amelanistic tongues) indicative of inbreeding depression. Furthermore, after a year with exceptionally high summer rainfall, a skin infection of unknown etiology caused significant mortality in the New Hampshire population, whereas other surveyed non-inbred populations were unaffected. This case study demonstrates how different anthropogenic impacts on natural environments can interact in unexpected ways to drive threatened populations toward extinction. 相似文献

Spawning activity in two captive Atlantic cod broodstock groups previously captured from the wild stock fishery was monitored over three spawning seasons. Both groups spawned under ambient photoperiod (PP) in the first year, after which photomanipulation was applied to compress the PP cycle of one broodstock group, while the second group was maintained on natural PP. Increased total egg volumes, number of egg batches, total egg production, and duration of the spawning season were observed in both ambient PP and advanced PP groups in the second and third spawning seasons. Compared to ambient controls, the photoadvanced group commenced spawning earlier, had a longer spawning season, produced a lower total volume of eggs over the entire spawning season, and had lower mean daily batch volumes of eggs, and the eggs were of smaller mean diameter. Fertilization success was >90% in all years, increased in both groups in the first year after photomanipulation but declined to prior levels in the following year. No consistent difference in fertilization success was observed between advanced PP and ambient PP groups. Rates of cell development abnormalities were low (<10%) in both groups over the three spawning seasons. Abnormalities of cell symmetry and clarity increased in both ambient PP and advanced PP groups over the three spawning seasons. However, no consistent differences in rate of cell abnormalities were observed between advanced PP and ambient PP groups within years. We conclude that PP advancement is an effective technique to compress the time between successive spawning periods in Atlantic cod and does not negatively affect fertilization success or rates of cell developmental abnormalities. The dry period has great implications on overall health and productivity in the subsequent lactation. Many anatomic, physiologic, and immunolgic changes are occurring for both the cow and the mammary gland during this time. These changes need to be understood and taken into consideration when assessing and implementing health management programs that involve this crucial time period. Specifically, nutritional and immunologic requirements of the individual cow need to be considered. The occurrence of many peripartum diseases is significantly influenced through nutritional and metabolic parameters that can be strongly influenced, controlled, and monitored in the dry period. From an udder-health perspective, the goal of the dry period can be met by recommending administration of DCT to all quarters of all cows at the end of lactation. As research continues to explore and define shortcomings of this approach and as scrutiny of the prophylactic use of antibiotics increases, however, novel approaches to preventing and eliminating IMI may become more readily available. These approaches offer new methods to improve upon and redefine what should be realistic goals of the dry period and afford an opportunity for continued improvement of udder health in today's dairy herds. 相似文献

Phenolics from the American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) were fractionated into a series of proanthocyanidins and other flavonoid compounds by vacuum chromatography on a hydrophilic, porous polyvinylic gel permeation polymer. Antioxidant activity was not restricted to a particular class of components in the extract but was found in a wide range of the fractions. Significant chemopreventive activity, as indicated by an ornithine decarboxylase assay, was localized in one particular proanthocyanidin-rich fraction from the initial fractionation procedure. Further fractionation of the active anticarcinogenic fraction revealed the following components: seven flavonoids, mainly quercetin, myricetin, the corresponding 3-O-glycosides, (-)-epicatechin, (+)-catechin, and dimers of both gallocatechin and epigallocatechin types, and a series of oligomeric proanthocyanidins. 相似文献

cottons (AADD), G. hirsutum and G. barbadense, could provide important information about the feasibility of using these genetic resources for cotton improvement. The primary
objective of this study was to analyze the genetic diversity in A-genome diploid cotton species, G. herbaceum (A1) and G.␣arboreum (A2) by using microsatellite markers. Forty-one A-genome germplasm accessions were evaluated with 32 microsatellite loci.
Genetic similarities between A1 and A2 ranged from 0.62 to 0.86 with a mean of 0.70. Within each A-genome species similarities
ranged from 0.80 to 0.97 with a mean of 0.89 for A1 and from 0.82 to 0.98 with a mean of 0.89 for A2. A UPGMA tree and principal

The origin of highly acidic (pH<4.5) barren soils in the Klamath Mountains of northern California was examined. Soil parent material was mica schist that contained an average of 2,700 mg N kg−1 , which corresponds to 7.1 Mg N ha−1 contained in a 10-cm thickness of bedrock. In situ soil solutions were dominated by H+ , labile-monomeric Al3+ and NO3 − , indicating that the barren area soils were nitrogen saturated—more mineral nitrogen available than required by biota. Leaching of excess NO3 − has resulted in removal of nutrient cations and soil acidification. Nitrogen release rates from organic matter free soil ranged from 0.0163 to 0.0321 mg N kg−1 d−1 . Nitrogen release rate from fresh ground rock was 0.0465 mg N kg−1 d−1 . This study demonstrates that geologic nitrogen may represent a large and reactive nitrogen pool that can contribute significantly to soil acidification. 相似文献
