The effect of 2(N‐morpholino)ethane)sulfonic acid (MES) on the growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativa L. var. Marketer) in hydroponic culture was determined at 0, 1, 5, and 10 mM concentrations. The effect of adding the MES to the solution at the time of transfer to hydroponic culture or waiting one week was also determined. MES was observed to strongly affect plant growth with increasing concentration in nutrient solution. Tissue and nutrient solution analysis determined that MES affects manganese (Mn) uptake. MES appears to be reduced by Mn, precipitating the Mn out of solution. The suitability of MES as a pH buffer in hydroponic culture is discussed in terms of this effect.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to quantify the effect of 16 ppm of dietary monensin on milk production and composition of dairy cows, and to investigate factors having a potential impact on this effect. Data were generated from a total of 3577 Holstein dairy cows (47 herds) in Quebec enrolled in a herd-level, randomized clinical trial investigating the effects of monensin supplementation. Milk production and composition data were collected from monthly dairy herd improvement (DHI) testing. Monensin increased milk production by 0.9 kg/cow/d in cows under 150 days in milk (DIM) (P < 0.05). Monensin decreased milk fat percentage by 0.18 percentage points during the whole lactation (P < 0.05). This decreasing effect was larger for component-fed cows (P < 0.05) and for cows being fed low levels of dietary physically effective particles (P < 0.05) when compared respectively to cows fed total mixed ration and cows fed high levels of dietary physically effective particles. The results of this study suggest that monensin influences milk production and milk composition of dairy cows, and that diet composition and feeding system influence those effects.  相似文献

During cold winters, freshwater populations of alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) are prone to massive die-offs, the physiological causes of which are poorly understood. We analyzed fatty acid composition before and after a laboratory cold challenge to examine the potential loss of cell membrane fluidity as a factor in winter mortality of these fish. Fish that died during the cold challenge displayed lower levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, lower indices of unsaturation, and higher levels of monounsaturated fatty acids in membrane lipids compared to controls and survivors. Fatty acids associated with storage lipids were largely unaffected by the cold challenge. Differences in diet (Artemia versus Daphnia) had little effect on the fatty acid composition of these fish. Reduced activity of Δ5 desaturase enzymes may explain the decreased levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (specifically arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) we observed in the cold temperature mortalities. Our results indicate that a loss of homeoviscous adaptation may play a role in low temperature mortality of freshwater alewives, and an analysis of alewife diets may improve our ability to predict winter die-offs of these fishes. Identifying corn plant location and/or spacing is important for predicting yield potential and making decisions for in-season nitrogen application rate. In this study, an automatic corn stalk identification system based on a laser line-scan technique was developed to measure stalk locations during corn mid-growth stages. A laser line-scan technique is advantageous in this application because the line-scan data sets taken from various points of view of a plant stalk results in less interference and higher probability of plant recognition. Data were collected for two 10-meter-long corn rows at the growth stages of V8 and V10 using a mobile test platform in 2011. Each potential stalk cluster was identified in a scan and registered with the same stalks in previous scans. The final location of a stalk was the average of the measured locations in all scans. The current system setup with data processing algorithms achieved 24.0 and 10.0 % of mean total errors in plant counting at the V8 and V10 growth stages, respectively. The root-mean-squared error (RMSE) between system measured plant locations and manually measured ones were 2.3 and 2.6 cm at the V8 and V10 growth stages, respectively. The interplant spacing measured by the developed system had a good correlation with the manual measurement with an R 2 of 0.962 and 0.951 for the V8 and V10 growth stages, respectively. This system can be ultimately integrated in a variable-rate-spraying system to improve real-time, high spatial resolution variable-rate nitrogen applications.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To measure nutrient absorption by the intestine during postnatal development of dogs. ANIMAL: 110 Beagles ranging from neonatal to adult dogs. PROCEDURE: Rates of absorption for sugars (glucose, galactose, and fructose), amino acids (aspartate, leucine, lysine, methionine, and proline), a dipeptide (glycyl-sarcosine), and linoleic acid by the proximal, mid, and distal regions of the small intestine were measured as functions of age and concentration (kinetics) by use of intact tissues and brush-border membrane vesicles. Absorption of octanoic acid by the proximal portion of the colon was measured in intact tissues. RESULTS: Rates of carrier-mediated transport by intact tissues decreased from birth to adulthood for aldohexoses and most amino acids but not for fructose and aspartate. Kinetics and characteristics of absorption suggest that there were changes in the densities, types, and proportions of various carriers for sugars and amino acids. Saturable absorption of linoleic acid in the small intestine and octanoic acid in the proximal portion of the colon increased after weaning. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Rates of absorption decreased between birth and adulthood for most nutrients. However, because of intestinal growth, absorption capacities of the entire small intestine remained constant for leucine and proline and increased for glucose, galactose, fructose, aspartate, and proline but were less than predicted from the increase in body weight. Although postnatal ontogeny of nutrient absorption was consistent with changes in the composition of the natural and commercial diets of growing dogs, rates of amino acid and peptide absorption were lower than expected.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe postnatal changes in the populations of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of dogs. ANIMALS: 110 Beagles ranging from neonatal to adult dogs. PROCEDURE: Contents of the stomach and proximal and distal portions of the colon and contents and mucosa of the mid region of the small intestine were collected from puppies at 1 day after birth and subsequent suckling; puppies at 21, 42, and 63 days after birth; and adult female dogs (ie, dams of the puppies) for enumeration of bacterial populations. RESULTS: The entire GIT was colonized at day 1 by all groups of bacteria studied; aerotolerant forms were dominant. During subsequent postnatal development, there were changes in the relative proportions of the various groups of bacteria with anaerobic groups increasing in absolute and relative numbers. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Establishment of bacterial populations in the GIT of dogs is a gradual process that begins immediately after birth. Age-related changes in the relative proportions of bacterial groups coincided with changes in diet and physiologic processes of the host and can influence nutritional state and disease resistance of developing dogs. Differences among regions of the GIT suggest that fecal samples may have limited use for understanding the populations of bacteria and the age and diet-related changes in various regions of the GIT.  相似文献
