To examine tolerance of cadmium (Cd) by eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) cv. ‘Hybrid PK 123’, plants were grown in refined sand in complete nutrient solution for 52 days in a glasshouse at ambient temperature. Cadmium sulfate was superimposed on day 53, at variable levels: nil, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 mM. Influence of excess Cd was discernible after 5 days of metal supply at 0.4 and 0.5 mM Cd as depression in growth. At these levels, foliar symptoms were initiated as paling of young leaves at the base progressing upward. With increase in age, affected leaves turned golden yellow and these effects spread to lower leaves. Leaf size and floral initiation were very much restricted. These types of phenotypes induced leaf senescence. Excess Cd reduced the biomass and fruit yield of plants. At higher levels (>0.1 mM) of Cd, fruit formation was completely inhibited and fruits formed at 0.05 and 0.1 mM Cd were smaller in size. Besides this, excess Cd disturbed the metabolism of eggplant by reducing the concentration of chlorophyll (a and b), protein, Hill reaction activity, and activity of antioxidant enzymes—catalase and ascorbate peroxidase; whereas the activity of peroxidase and ribonuclease increased in leaves of eggplant. Cadmium excess reduced the concentration of Fe and Zn and Cd increased that of proline, lipid peroxidation, phenols, reducing sugars and Cd concentration in leaves of eggplant. 相似文献

Particulate matter (PM) is an important air pollutant because of its adverse impacts towards human health. The existing and conventional methods of PMs monitoring are found to be inadequate in feasibility, which paved the way of magnetic biomonitoring approach. The magnetic measurement carried through the plant leaves is useful means in assessing the PM pollution. Plant species are found to be an effective biomonitors and may act as natural filters by trapping and retaining the PM on their leaf surfaces. Therefore, the aim of this communication is to demonstrate the magnetic properties [magnetic susceptibility (χ), anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM)] of two roadside plant leaves (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and Mangifera indica) at four spatially distant sites. The study measures and compares the capabilities of these plants to accumulate and retain the PMs. The study also assesses the PM pollution at selected sites and establishes the relationship between magnetic properties and PM in the city of an Indo-Burma hot spot region. The results indicated a significant correlation between the concentration of ambient PM and magnetic measurement (χ, ARM and SIRM) of both the roadside plant leaves. Similarly, reasonably good correlations are obtained between magnetic parameters (χ, ARM and SIRM) and Fe content in PMs. Present study is, perhaps, a novel contribution in the area of bio-magnetic monitoring studied with several magnetic parameters viz., χ, ARM and SIRM. Results indicated that the bio-magnetic monitoring is applied for environmental geomagnetism which act as proxy for ambient PM pollution and further employed as an eco-sustainable tool for environmental management in urban and peri-urban regions. 相似文献

Sulfides from four achondrite meteorite groups are enriched in 33S (up to 0.040 per mil) as compared with primitive chondrites and terrestrial standards. Stellar nucleosynthesis and cosmic ray spallation are ruled out as causes of the anomaly, but photochemical reactions in the early solar nebula could produce the isotopic composition. The large 33S excess present in oldhamite from the Norton County aubrite (0.161 per mil) suggests that refractory sulfide minerals condensed from a nebular gas with an enhanced carbon-oxygen ratio, but otherwise solar composition is the carrier. The presence of a mass-independent sulfur effect in meteorites argues for a similar process that could account for oxygen isotopic anomalies observed in refractory inclusions in primitive chondrites. 相似文献

The competitive saprophytic colonization (CSC) of pigeon-pea substrates by Fusarium udum was studied in relation to environmental factors, chemical treatments and microbial antagonism. CSC was best at 22°C, good at 30°C, but at 40°C the substrate was vigorously colonized by Coprinus lagopus and Aspergillus nidulans which suppressed colonization by F. udum. High competitive saprophytic ability of F. udum was noted at pH 7 and 9 at soil moisture contents between 5 and 30%. At pH 4 and 5 F. udum was replaced by A. flavus and A. nidulans. The CSC of F. udum decreased in the soil-sand inoculum mixture amended with the fungicides bavistin, dithane Z-78 and difolatan. The herbicides 2,4-D and machete also reduced CSC by F. udum whereas urea promoted it. Colonization of pigeon-pea substrate by F. udum was highly suppressed by antagonism from Pénicillium citrinum, A. niger, Micromonospora gtobosa, A.flavus, A. terreus and Trichoderma viride when these were used in inoculum mixtures with F. udum or when substrates had already been colonized by them. For the accurate determination of ethylene glycol retention by soil minerals, precision in moisture removal is extremely important. One percent decrease in moisture appears to increase the ethylene glycol retention by 10 to 12 mg/g of sample. Drying samples over P2O5 is tedious and requires considerable care. An alternate method that is precise and easy is presented. By this method, an air-dried Ca-saturated subsample suspected of containing irreversibly dehydrating clays is saturated and equilibrated with ethylene glycol. The retention values are determined on a moisture-free weight basis calculated from a duplicate subsample dried in an oven at 105°C. Ethylene glycol retention of samples that do not contain irreversibly dehydrating clays is determined directly by saturation and equilibration of 105°C oven-dried samples. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the possibility of inclusion of cold‐pressed rapeseed cake (CPRC) in diets for common carp, Cyprinus carpio L. Four isonitrogenous (322 g kg?1 crude protein) and isoenergetic diets (17.5 MJ kg?1) with four levels of CPRC incorporation 0, 110, 220 and 330 g kg?1 (treatments RC0, RC11, RC22 and RC33, respectively) were evaluated in a 50‐day growth test with common carp of 500 g initial weight. Statistically significant higher final weights (1215–1243 g) were obtained in fish fed diets including CPRC. Fish growth rates were nearly identical in all treatments (specific growth rate of 1.7–1.8% day?1). Similar results were obtained in respect of feeding coefficients (FCR) that ranged from 1.6 to 1.8. Crude protein and ash concentration in fish bodies did not change. Statistically significant decreases in moisture content were found in carp in groups RC22 and RC33. Statistically significant increase of crude lipid in fish bodies were found in groups RC22 and RC33. The slaughter traits and meat quality analysis of carp did not show significant differences. We conclude that it is possible to include up to 330 g kg?1 of CPRC in diets of 2‐year‐old common carp without significant effects on growth and food utilization. 相似文献

To determine the effects of poor maternal nutrition and litter size on foetal growth during mid‐gestation, pregnant ewes (n = 82) were fed 100%, 60% or 140% of NRC TDN beginning at day 30.2 ± 0.2 of gestation. Transabdominal ultrasound was performed weekly between day 46.0 ± 0.4 and 86.0 ± 0.7 to monitor foetal heart width (HW), umbilical diameter (UMB), rib width (RW) and placentome outer (OD) and inner diameter (ID). Data were analysed with repeated‐measures using the mixed procedure for effects of maternal diet, litter size and gestation, and equations predictive of gestational age were generated using the regression procedure. To determine the agreement of ultrasound measurement and actual size, ewes (n = 20–21) were euthanized at day 45 or 90 to obtain corresponding postmortem measurements for Bland–Altman analysis. The HW, UMB and placentome OD and ID increased with gestation (p < .0001) but were unaffected by maternal diet or litter size (p ≥ .12). Ultrasound underestimated postmortem measurements of HW (14.8%), UMB (7.3%), placentome OD (4.5%) and ID (37.3%) at day 90 of gestation. Ultrasound underestimated RW at day 45 (7.7%) but overestimated RW (23.8%) at day 90, indicating inconsistent bias when reporting RW by ultrasound. Combining the HW, UMB, RW and placentome OD generated the strongest equation predictive of gestational age (R2 = .91). These findings indicate that during mid‐gestation, maternal diet or litter size did not affect HW, UMB or placentome diameters and these factors can be used to estimate gestational age. 相似文献

among the chief exporters of sandalwood and its products. Multiple shoots were induced from nodal shoot segments derived from
a 50- to 60-year-old candidate plus tree (CPT) on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.53 μM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 11.09 μM 6-benzylaminopurine (BA). In vitro differentiated shoots were multiplied on MS medium with 0.53 μM NAA, 4.44 μM BA, and additives: 283.93 μM ascorbic acid, 118.10 μM citric acid, 104.04 μM cystine, 342.24 μM glutamine, and 10% (v/v) coconut milk. New shoots were harvested repeatedly for up to three subculture passages on fresh

Summary Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) hybrids based on the A1 cytoplasmic-nuclear male-sterile (CMS) lines are more susceptible to smut (Tolyposporium penicillariae Bref.) than open-pollinated varieties. Seventy eight pairs of hybrids, made onto male-sterile (A) lines and their counterpart maintainer (B) lines, were evaluated to examine the effects of male sterility and genetic resistance of parental lines on the smut severity of hybrids. The A-line hybrids had higher smut severity and lower selfed seedset than the counterpart B-line hybrids, indicating that it is the CMS-mediated male sterility rather than the A1 cytoplasm per se that caused greater smut severity of A-line hybrids. However, with the use of resistant parental lines even male-sterile hybrids of A-lines, in several cases, were as resistant as some of the highly resistant male-fertile hybrids of B-lines. It would be possible to produce smut resistant hybrids (< 10% severity) on A-lines, albeit in low frequency, even if only one parent of a hybrid were resistant. However, the probability of producing such hybrids would be higher when both parents were resistant to smut.
