Context
Pinus pinaster Ait. is found in the Iberian Peninsula under Mediterranean and Atlantic conditions. Both climates encounter each other in Galicia (NW Spain), where two bioclimatic regions can be differentiated: coastal and inland. A breeding program was launched in the coastal area, with two breeding and deployment areas delimited.Aims
We analyse plasticity patterns across regions in a coastal breeding population to assess the suitability of current breeding areas and how genetic material will likely respond to future climate.Methods
Total height at ages 3 and 8?years was assessed in 16 trials established along the coast and in inner Galicia. Clustering of environments with similar genotypic performance, family sensitivities to climatic factors and stability analyses were performed.Results
Sizeable genetic variation in plasticity was found among families, and crossover genotype-by-environment interactions were detected within and between regions. It was unfeasible to regionalize Galicia into alternative areas of stable genotypic performance. Only the cold regime was found to noticeably underlie the array of phenotypic responses to changing environmental conditions.Conclusions
Results suggest that previous delimitation in two breeding areas is pointless and indicate reduced effects of a changing climate towards Mediterranean conditions on decreasing population fitness. 相似文献52.
The activity of ten compounds isolated from Brazilian lichen over the release of hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide was evaluated in the culture of peritoneal macrophage cells from mice. Salazinic, secalonic A and fumarprotocetraric acids were the compounds that induced the greatest release of H2O2, whereas 12R-usnic and diffractaic acids induced the release of NO. Four-armed airflow olfactometer was used to determining the foraging behavior ofPteroptrix longgiclava (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) andEncarsia gigas (Tshumakova) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) to the essential oils which emitted from the healthy bark ofPopulus pseudo-simonii×P. nigra, the infested bark injured byQuadraspidiotus gigas (Thiem & Gerneck), the body and scale of fixed 1st-instar-nymph ofQ. gigas. The results from these experiments showed that the volatile oils produced from the injured bark and from the scale of fixed
1st-instar-nymph had a higher attractive ability to female adults of the two species of wasps. The essential oil produced
from the scale of the pest at dosages of 3–7 μL and the essential oil emitted by injured bark at dosages of 5–9 μL had a stronger
alluring effect on the host searching behavior ofPteroptrix longgiclava. The essential oil from the body of fixed 1st-instar-nymph ofQ. gigas also had certain effect on the host locating effort ofPteroptrix longgiclava andEncarsia gigas. Those two wasps did not shown any reaction to the essential oil produced by the healthy bark of poplar.

A new approach to the definition of physiographic and climatic potential areas for forest species, based on the ecological
field theory, is outlined in this paper. The proposed formulation is tested on the Spanish juniper (Juniperus thurifera L.), using data from 883 permanent and temporary plots throughout its distribution area in the Spanish autonomous region
of Castilla y León. The suitability of the territory for the species is assessed by previously studying its habitat, which
in turn is analyzed through physiographic and climatic parameters. This new method is rooted in an additive index that depends
on the Mahalanobis distance in the parametric space that evaluates the ecological resemblance between the studied site and
each of the points defining the parametric habitat. Thereby the ecological potential of any site within the territory can
be established, integrated in a geographical information systems and accordingly charted. The results are compared with those
obtained with the methodology traditionally used by Spanish foresters (factorial index), showing that the overall potential
area is similar in size but quite different in its distribution. 相似文献

A new sunflower mutant, CAS-12, was obtained, which has both high palmitic (≈30%) and high oleic acid contents, and also a
substantial amount of palmitoleic acid (≈7%). The mutant was selected after X-ray irradiation of dry seeds of the inbred line
BSD-2-423, which had normal palmitic (≈3%) and high oleic (≈88%) acid levels. The increase of palmitic and palmitoleic acids
occurred at the expense of the oleic acid content, which decreased to around 55% in respect to the original line. Linoleic
acid content is always under 5%. Palmitic and palmitoleic acid levels were similar to those of the high palmitic mutant CAS-5
obtained in a previous programme from a low oleic line isogenic to BSD-2-423 using a similar mutagenic treatment. In that
previous programme we also selected three high stearic acid mutants using chemical mutagenic treatment on the same sunflower
line (RDF-1-532). We attempted to obtain mutants in other lines but were unsuccessful. The isolation of similar mutants in
isogenic parental lines illustrates the importance of the genetic background in the development of specific mutants with an
altered seed oil fatty acid composition. The oil of this mutant will increase the range of potential uses of sunflower oil.

Plants collected in thirteen wild populations of Capsicum annuum from Northwest Mexico were tested for resistance to the pepper huasteco begomovirus (formerly subgroup III) (PHV) that is
transmitted by the white fly Bemisia tabaci Genadius. Plants were inoculated using both grafting and biolistic methods. Presence of viral DNA was detected by dot blot
hybridization and densitometry. Populations varied in their resistance to PHV. Plants of only two of the populations either
did not develop disease symptoms or showed very light symptoms after inoculation. In some cases, symptoms appeared several
days after inoculation. In plants of these populations viral DNA was detected by dot-blot hybridization assays but they appear
to be a good source of resistance (symptomless) for use in breeding programmes.

The Guinea yams, Dioscorea
cayenensis Lam. and D. rotundata Poir. (D. cayenensis–D. rotundata complex), represent a highly important crop, widely distributed in the humid and semi-humid tropics. The ploidy levels of
170 accessions of the core set of Guinea yams from West African countries was determined using flow cytometry with propidium
iodide staining. One hundred and eight of the genotypes were found to be tetraploid, 47 were hexaploid and five were octoploid.
One mixoploid individual containing tetraploid and hexaploid nuclei was also detected. A deeper analysis considering each
separate taxon revealed that while for D. rotundata the majority of individuals were tetraploid, for D. cayenensis this ploidy level was not detected in any of the accessions. Also, no association between ploidy level and place of cultivation
was found for the evaluated germplasm. The obtained data is highly valuable for breeding programs of Guinea yam, especially
for the optimization of future hybridization experiments directed to the genetic improvement of this economically important

Among the main causes of poor yield in common beans are fungal, viral and bacterial diseases. Common bacterial blight, caused
by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap), is one of the major bacterial diseases leading to significant losses in Brazil. Chemical control is ineffective, therefore,
the use of resistant varieties becomes an interesting alternative. The objective of the present work was to evaluate disease
resistance under natural infection of the pathogen in 109 recombinant inbred lines (F7) of P. vulgaris originated from the cross HAB-52 (susceptible — snapbean) × BAC-6 (resistant — common bean) in two different environments,
as well as to calculate genetic parameters to assist in the selection of promising materials to be used in the CBB resistance
breeding program. The data of the genetic parameters were
compared to those calculated for the F3 generation originated from the same cross. The heritability results for DI (disease index) and VI (variation index) in F3 were 26.85% and 0.26, respectively, whereas in F7 they were 91.77% and 1.36, respectively. These results demonstrate a potential to be explored for this advanced population,
that in the future, along with other pathogen variability studies and tests in other environments, may provide more information
regarding a more precise evaluation of promising genotypes to be used in common bean breeding programs aiming to obtain CBB
resistant varieties.

Banana and plantain are among the most important food crops in developing countries but production is threatened by increasing
virulent forms of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. Chemical control is not economically effective and,therefore, breeding programs are necessary. Traditional field studies
of new genotype resistance to this disease are time-consuming and destructive. Therefore,we developed a rapid and non-destructive
procedure to differentiate field-grown banana resistant from susceptible clones. This procedure implicates application of
culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense race 1 onto banana leaves. The relationship between duration of the fungal in vitro incubation, and the fungal culture fresh mass, the culture filtrate absorbency, and the Gross Michel (susceptible cultivar)leaf
lesion area (after application of the culture filtrate) were similar and at 24day-incubation the highest values of the recorded
indicators were observed. A comparison between Gross Michel and FHIA-01(resistant) was also performed. The most relevant differences
between cultivars were observed at 48 hours after application of the culture filtrate, and in the middle-aged leaves. The
position of the culture filtrate application in the leaf limb (distal, middle, proximal) was not determinant. A wider comparison
among banana cultivars confirmed previous results informed by other researchers using different systems to study this plant-fungus
interaction. Such a confirmation validates the effectiveness of the procedure described here to select rapid and non-destructively
banana resistance to this disease at field level.
