Sphingolipids are a group of lipids that are derived from long-chain 1,3-dihydroxy-2-amino bases and that are involved in important processes in plants. Long-chain bases are usually found bound to long-chain fatty acids forming ceramides, the lipophilic moiety of the most common sphingolipid classes found in plant tissues: glucosyl-ceramides and glucosyl inositol phosphoryl-ceramides (GIPCs). The developing sunflower seed kernel is a tissue rich in sphingolipids, although, importantly, its glycerolipid composition can vary if some steps of the fatty acid synthesis are altered. Here, the sphingolipid composition of the seed from different sunflower mutants with altered fatty acid compositions was studied. The long-chain base composition and content were analyzed, and it was found to be similar in all of the mutants studied. The sphingolipid species were also determined by mass spectrometry, and some differences were found in highly saturated sunflower mutants, which contained higher levels of GIPC, ceramides, and hydroxyl-ceramides. 相似文献
A study of the anaerobic digestion of wastewater from the pressing of orange peel generated in orange juice production was carried out in a laboratory-scale completely stirred tank reactor at mesophilic temperature (37 degrees C). Prior to anaerobic treatment the raw wastewater was subjected to physicochemical treatment using aluminum sulfate as a flocculant and to pH reduction using a solution of sulfuric acid. The reactor was batch fed at COD loads of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 g of COD. The process was very stable for all of the loads studied, with mean pH and alkalinity values of 7.5 and 3220 mg of CaCO3/L, respectively. The anaerobic digestion of this substrate was found to follow a first-order kinetic model, from which the specific rate constants for methane production, K(G), were determined. The K(G) values decreased considerably from 0.0672 to 0.0078 L/(g h) when the COD load increased from 1.5 to 5.0 g of COD, indicating an inhibition phenomenon in the system studied. The proposed model predicted the behavior of the reactor very accurately, showing deviations of <5% between the experimental and theoretical values of methane production. The methane yield coefficient was found to be 295 mL of CH4 STP/g of COD removed, whereas the mean biodegradability of the substrate (TOC) was 88.2%. A first-order kinetic model for substrate (TOC) consumption allowed determination of the specific rate constants for substrate uptake, K(C), which also decreased with increasing loading, confirming the above-mentioned inhibition process. Finally, the evolution of the individual volatile fatty acid concentrations (acetic, C2; propionic, C3; butyric, C4; isobutyric, iC4; valeric, C5; isovaleric, iC5; and caproic, C6) with digestion time for all loads used was also studied. The main acids generated were acetic and propionic for all loads studied, facilitating the conversion into methane. 相似文献
Many naturally occurring plant volatiles are known to have antifungal properties. However, they have limited use because they diffuse rapidly in air. In this in vitro study, acetaldehyde was chosen as a prototype volatile in order to study the controlled release of antifungal volatiles from cyclodextrins (CD). The major postharvest pathogens Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, and Colletotrichum acutatum were exposed to the pure volatile for 7 days at 23 degrees C. Acetaldehyde was most effective against A. alternata, followed by C. acutatum, and B. cinerea, with 0.12, 0.56, and 1.72 microL/L in air being required to inhibit fungal growth, respectively, according to the bioassay developed. Second, the effectiveness of the new beta-CD-acetaldehyde release system was evaluated against A. alternata for 7 days at 23 degrees C. Sufficient volatile was released from 0.7 g of beta-CD-acetaldehyde to prevent fungal growth in vitro. 相似文献
Cultural boundaries have often been the basis for discrimination, nationalism, religious wars, and genocide. Little is known, however, about how cultural groups form or the evolutionary forces behind group affiliation and ingroup favoritism. Hence, we examine these forces experimentally and show that arbitrary symbolic markers, though initially meaningless, evolve to play a key role in cultural group formation and ingroup favoritism because they enable a population of heterogeneous individuals to solve important coordination problems. This process requires that individuals differ in some critical but unobservable way and that their markers be freely and flexibly chosen. If these conditions are met, markers become accurate predictors of behavior. The resulting social environment includes strong incentives to bias interactions toward others with the same marker, and subjects accordingly show strong ingroup favoritism. When markers do not acquire meaning as accurate predictors of behavior, players show a markedly reduced taste for ingroup favoritism. Our results support the prominent evolutionary hypothesis that cultural processes can reshape the selective pressures facing individuals and so favor the evolution of behavioral traits not previously advantaged. 相似文献
Nitrogen (N) fertilization of sugarcane crops is a common practice used to reach sustainable levels of productivity, both for plant cane and especially for the ratoon. However, when evaluating the amount of N in the plant derived from fertilizer (NDDF) at harvest, this contribution is approximately 20% of total plant biomass N, which raises questions regarding the efficiency of N fertilization. The goal of this study was to evaluate the N derived from fertilizer (NDFF) during the sugarcane crop development, for both plant cane and first ratoon crop cycles. Two field experiments were performed in São Paulo State, Brazil, in Arenic Kandiustults and in Typic Eutrustox. The sugarcane was mechanically harvested without burning. N fertilizer for both the plant cane (doses of 40, 80 and 120 kg ha−1 of N as urea) and the first ratoon (doses of 50 and 100 kg ha−1 of N as ammonium sulfate) was labeled 15N. The results showed that NDFF contributed up to 40% of the total N in the plant cane at initial stages of development. The magnitude of this contribution decreased during stages of maturity to approximately 10% of total N at harvest. In the first ratoon, application of N fertilizer was more effective for crop nutrition, constituting up to 70% of total N in initial stages of development and decreasing through the cycle, reaching approximately 30% at harvest. Therefore, studies that evaluate NDDF only at harvest can lead to underestimating the role of N fertilizer for sugarcane nutrition. The higher NDFF in ratoon explains why this crop cycle presents a more consistent response to N fertilization than plant cane, as observed in several studies developed under Brazilian conditions in the last decades. 相似文献
Damage caused by frost on coffee plants can impact significantly in the reduction of crop quality and productivity. Remote sensing can be used to evaluate the damage caused by frost, providing precise and timely agricultural information to producers, assisting in decision making, and consequently minimizing production losses. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the potential use of multispectral images obtained by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to analyze and identify damage caused by frost in coffee plants in different climatic favorability zones. Visual evaluations of frost damage and chlorophyll content quantification were carried out in a commercial coffee plantation in Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil. The images were obtained from a multispectral camera coupled to a UAV with rotating wings. The results obtained demonstrated that the vegetation indices had a strong relationship and high accuracy with the frost damage. Among the indices studied the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was the one that had better performances (r?=?? 0.89, R2?=?0.79, MAE?=?10.87 e RMSE?=?14.35). In a simple way, this study demonstrated that multispectral images, obtained from UAV, can provide a fast, continuous, and accessible method to identify and evaluate frost damage in coffee plants. This information is essential for the coffee producer for decision-making and adequate crop management.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between unintended pregnancies and prolonged breast-feeding among 18 countries on an individual and aggregated level.DESIGN AND SETTING: Regional multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine this association based on 18 Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 1995 and 2000.SUBJECTS: Women who had a live child between 13 and 36 months old were included in these analyses (n=41 353).RESULTS: Regression models were adjusted for 10 covariates including child age, maternal age, pregnancy status of mother at the time of interview and parity. In 11 out of the 18 countries the odds ratio (OR) of the association between unintended pregnancies and prolonged breast-feeding was <1.0, reaching statistical significance in three countries. Pooled analyses of all 18 countries detected a significant association between unintended pregnancies and less likelihood of prolonged breast-feeding (OR=0.90, 95% confidence interval=0.85-0.96).CONCLUSIONS: Prospective studies are needed to further understand if and how pregnancy intentions influence breast-feeding outcomes in different settings. 相似文献
Objective To determine the type, prevalence, and prognosis of ocular and periocular lesions in free‐living little owls (LO) and scops owls (SO), injured by blunt trauma. Procedures Medical records from LO and SO with ocular or periocular lesions secondary to blunt trauma were reviewed. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed in all birds. Short protocol electroretinography (ERG) and ocular ultrasound were performed as dictated by the case. Results During the study period, a total of 158 LO and 99 SO with blunt trauma were admitted. Among these, 43 LO (27.8%) and 27 SO (27.3%) had ocular or periocular lesions. Bilateral injuries (72.1% LO and 81.5% SO) were more common than unilateral. Common findings in both species were: corneal erosions/superficial ulcers, anterior and posterior uveitis, cataracts, hyphema, posterior synechia, vitreal hemorrhage, and retinal detachment. Electroretinography was performed in 32 LO and eight SO, which had posterior segment lesions or opacity of the transparent media. Normal to nonrecordable b‐wave amplitudes were observed. Follow‐up was available in 13 LO and 11 SO. Among these, nine LO (14 eyes) and 10 SO (17 eyes) had resolution of the clinical signs following medical treatment. Conclusions Ocular lesions are common in LO and SO injured by blunt trauma. Electroretinography is a valuable diagnostic tool to assess the severity of retinal dysfunction secondary to blunt trauma and to determine the response to medical treatment. A complete ophthalmic examination is a determining factor in the early management of trauma in these species. 相似文献
The goal of this work was to study the effect of storage time on the functional properties of glutenin films plasticized with selected hydrophilic low molecular weight compounds: glycerol (GL), triethanolamine (TEA), and sorbitol (S). Glutenins were extracted from wheat gluten, and films were cast from film-forming solutions. The glutenin-based films were homogeneous, flexible, translucent, and easy to handle. Films were stored in an environmental chamber at 50 +/- 5% realtive humidity and 23 +/- 2 degrees C. Optical, mechanical, and water vapor permeability properties were monitored at regular intervals for 16 weeks. Films plasticized with GL and TEA had similar mechanical and water vapor barrier properties during the first few days of fabrication. Films plasticized with S were stronger, with better water vapor barrier properties. Mechanical and water vapor permeability properties of films plasticized with GL changed dramatically over time, whereas the properties of films plasticized with TEA and S remained stable during storage. Color properties of films plasticized with GL, TEA, and S did not change within the time period studied. 相似文献
