A trial based on progesterone radioimmunoassay of milk samples is described. Samples from 2274 cows in 14 herds were collected on the day of insemination and 7, 23 and 30 days later, unless a return to service occurred before the designated sample date. Two additional samples were collected from cows which returned to service more than 35 days after the first service, one on the day of the return and another seven days later. All six samples from these cows were assayed for progesterone concentration.

Late returns, defined as returns to oestrus 36 or more days after mating, occurred in 8.6% of the cows. Milk progesterone assay results indicate that of these apparently late-returning cows, 55.9% suffered a loss of the conceptus, 22.1% had not been detected in oestrus around 21 days after first insemination, 11.8% were in anoestrus at insemination, 5.6% conceived to the insemination and were pregnant when thought to have had a late return, 2.6% were in prooestrus or dioestrus at insemination and 2.1% went into anoestrus after an oestrus insemination.

The average prevalence of late returns after the 35th day (8.6%) and the estimated incidence of losses of concepta (4.8%) are lower than those reported in comparable studies elsewhere. Although many of the late-return cows were mated again and conceived, this syndrome nevertheless contributes significantly to the wastage rate, at least in New Zealand dairy herds with their strictly seasonal calving pattern. The implications of these findings are discussed and recommendations for their prevention are made where appropriate.  相似文献

One of the most common modes of accessing information in the World Wide Web is surfing from one document to another along hyperlinks. Several large empirical studies have revealed common patterns of surfing behavior. A model that assumes that users make a sequence of decisions to proceed to another page, continuing as long as the value of the current page exceeds some threshold, yields the probability distribution for the number of pages that a user visits within a given Web site. This model was verified by comparing its predictions with detailed measurements of surfing patterns. The model also explains the observed Zipf-like distributions in page hits observed at Web sites.  相似文献

The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) z-axis accelerometer has obtained over 200 vertical structures of thermospheric density, temperature, and pressure, ranging from 110 to 170 kilometers, compared to only three previous such vertical structures. In November 1997, a regional dust storm in the Southern Hemisphere triggered an unexpectedly large thermospheric response at mid-northern latitudes, increasing the altitude of thermospheric pressure surfaces there by as much as 8 kilometers and indicating a strong global thermospheric response to a regional dust storm. Throughout the MGS mission, thermospheric density bulges have been detected on opposite sides of the planet near 90 degreesE and 90 degreesW, in the vicinity of maximum terrain heights. This wave 2 pattern may be caused by topographically-forced planetary waves propagating up from the lower atmosphere.  相似文献

A central problem facing worldwide culture of yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) is the presence of skeletal malformations, including jaw deformities. This study presents a morphological characterization of normal and abnormal cartilage jaw structures during early larval development. Samples of 70–150 larvae were collected from three cohorts from 2 to 9 days post hatching, anaesthetized and fixed for cartilage staining. Cartilaginous components were defined clearly at four days post hatch (dph) (4.65 ± 0.05 mm total length), and abnormal jaw structures were detectable at this time. Jaw deformities observed included extension of Meckel's cartilage with or without ventral bending of the anterior tip, displacement of ceratohyal and hypohyal cartilage ventrally and below Meckel's cartilage, and shortening and dorsal flexion of the lower jaw. At 4 dph, between 44% and 47% of all larvae examined had jaw abnormalities. The contribution of each deformity to the total number of deformities was variable among the three cohorts examined. To compare shape difference accurately we performed an exploratory, landmark‐based geometric morphometric analysis using seven homologous landmarks. Larvae were classified into three jaw morphology groups. The geometric morphometric approach provides a useful tool to standardize classification of cartilage jaw abnormalities at early developmental larval stages. Early recognition of developing abnormalities is of importance for fish farmers in both improving fish selection efficiency and for evaluating effects of rearing parameters.  相似文献

A recombinant carp growth hormone (rcGH) was used to develop for a GH radioreceptor binding assay in the goldfish (Carassius auratus). Specific binding of125I-rcGH to goldfish liver membranes was a pH, time, temperature, and membrane protein dependent process. Scatchard and LIGAND analysis indicated a single class of high affinity and low capacity binding site, with an association constant (Ka) of 1.9×1010 M–1 and a maximum binding capacity (Bmax) of 9 fmol mg–1 protein. Liver tissue displayed the highest125I-rcGH binding of all the tissues examined. Displacement of125I-rcGH with various unlabeled teleost and mammalian GHs and prolactins revealed that the goldfish hepatic binding site was highly specific for teleost GH. Intraperitoneal administration of 0.1, 1.0, and 10 g rcGH g–1 body weight to hypophysectomized goldfish resulted in a 27, 52, and 68% decrease in total binding sites, respectively. Injection of a high dose of rat prolactin (rPRL) (5 g rPRL g–1 body weight) also resulted in a 32% decrease in total binding sites. These results suggest that endogenous GH may have a role in the regulation of its own receptors in the goldfish.  相似文献

In vivo andin vitro techniques were used to examine the influence of various vertebrate peptides on growth hormone (GH) secretion in the goldfish. Tetradecapeptide somatostatin (SRIF-14) was found to inhibit GH secretionin vitro from perifused pituitary fragments, whereas similar concentrations of a salmonid SRIF peptide (sSRIF-25) did not affect GH secretion from the goldfish pituitary fragments. This indicates that SRIF receptors on the goldfish pituitary are very specific for SRIF-14-like peptides. Salmon gonadotropin (GTH)-releasing hormone (sGnRH) was found to elevate serum GH levels in male goldfish. The dopamine antagonist pimozide alone or injected in combination with sGnRH did not influence serum GH levels, although injection of pimozide alone significantly elevated serum GTH levels, in addition to potentiating the effects of sGnRH on GTH secretion. sGnRH stimulated GH secretion from goldfish pituitary fragmentsin vitro, indicating that sGnRH acts directly at the level of the pituitary to stimulate GH secretion in the goldfish. These results suggest that GnRH may also function as a GH-releasing factor in the goldfish, although the release-inhibitory factors for GH and GTH secretion do appear to be separate and distinct. Two human GH-releasing hormone (hGHRH) peptides were found to be ineffective in altering GH secretionin vitro from the perifused pituitary fragments. Consequently, a role for a mammalian GHRH-like peptide in the hypothalamic regulation of GH secretion in the goldfish remains questionable.  相似文献

Soils act as a sink or a source of atmospheric carbon, and great efforts are made to monitor soil organic carbon stocks, but soil inorganic carbon (SIC) stocks are not measured by many national‐ and continental‐scale soil monitoring networks. Topsoil (0–30 cm) SIC concentrations were determined for > 2000 sites on a regular 16‐km grid as part of the French, Réseau de Mesures de la Qualité des Sols (RMQS). We used design‐based statistical methods to calculate unbiased estimates of the mean SIC concentration and total stocks across France. Model‐based methods were used to determine the uncertainty of these estimates and to map the spatial distribution of these quantities. Observations of inorganic carbon were highly skewed and did not conform to standard statistical models. Data were normalized using a nonparametric transformation. The estimates and predictions of inorganic carbon are baselines against which the results of future phases of the network can be compared. We found that the total topsoil inorganic carbon stocks in France amount to 1070 ± 61 Tg, ca. one‐third of the corresponding organic carbon stocks. Spatial distribution of SIC was strongly linked to the underlying geology. We tested the reliability of estimating SIC concentrations and stocks from the French Soil Test Database, which contains the results of 280 000 soil analyses requested by farmers between 1990 and 2004. A biased estimate of soil inorganic carbon concentrations resulted, presumably because soil samples were selected according to concerns of farmers rather than by a statistical design.  相似文献

Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), a major aquatic weed in India, is one of the targets in a biological weed control research programme in India. A fungal pathogen, Alternaria alternata, is being evaluated as a biological control agent for this weed. The feasibility of solid substrate for the mass production of A. alternata has been examined. Conidia production and virulence of A. alternata were affected by temperature, light and incubation period. The highest number of conidia were produced on rice seed followed by wheat, sorghum, maize seeds and cornmeal at 20°C when exposed to near‐ultraviolet than on the other substrates, while the least conidia were observed on these substrates under light conditions. At 20°C, large numbers of virulent conidia were produced on rice seeds after 4 weeks of incubation under constant dark conditions. Henceforth, the use of rice seeds as a solid substrate for production of A. alternata could be a feasible method to produce conidia in a village co‐operative scenario in India.  相似文献

SUMMARY: An investigation into causes of low lamb marking percentages was made on a property in north-west New South Wales from 1971 to 1975. Investigations revealed that from 11 to 70% of the ewes in lamb were losing all their lambs. Observations suggested that feral pig predation was a factor in the perinatal loss.
In 1975, 2 groups of ewes were placed in adjoining paddocks prior to lambing. Feral pigs were excluded from one paddock for most of lambing by means of an electric fence. In this paddock, 117% of lambs were marked compared with 80% in the adjoining paddock. It was estimated that in 1975 over 600 lambs were killed by feral pigs from 1,422 ewes lambing in paddocks with feral pigs.
The problems involved in the diagnosis of feral pig predation are discussed.  相似文献
