Babesia conradae (B. conradae) causes hemolytic anemia in dogs. This organism has not been reported clinically since it was originally described in southern California in 1991. To date, no anti-protozoal therapies have been associated with clearance of B. conradae. This report describes the use of atovaquone and azithromycin for the treatment of dogs naturally infected with B. conradae and report the re-emergence of B. conradae in southern California. Twelve dogs naturally infected with B. conradae were identified by practicing veterinarians and public health officials in southern California. Treatments consisted of a 10 day course of atovaquone (13.3mg/kg PO q 8h) and azithromycin (10-12.5mg/kg PO q 24h). Four dogs were treated in a randomized blinded placebo-controlled fashion, four additional cases were treated in a non-random, non-blinded fashion and one dog received no treatment. All dogs were tested for B. conradae DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) initially and then once or 3 times post treatment (60-210 days). B. conradae infected dogs that received treatment did not have any detectable Babesia DNA by PCR after treatment. In contrast, dogs receiving placebo had detectable Babesia DNA by PCR throughout the study period. Combination therapy with atovaquone and azithromycin appears to be effective for acute and chronic babesiosis caused by B. conradae. 相似文献

The influence of parent and harvest year on the determination of oil, moisture, oleic acid, and linoleic acid contents in intact olive fruit was studied by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Spectral data from 400 to 1700 nm were recorded on 437 fruit samples collected in 1996 and 1997 from seedling plants derived from three different female parents. Partial least squares models were developed using samples for each year and for each female parent separately and were validated against the other groups. Calibration models were accurate enough to predict all constituents in new samples from a different female parent but were not transferable across years. However, a calibration equation of sufficient accuracy was obtained from the combined data set (r values of 0.94, 0.93, 0.84, and 0.88 and RMSECV values of 1.33, 1.88, 4.73, and 2.91 for oil, moisture, oleic acid, and linoleic acid contents, respectively). These results demonstrate the utility of NIRS as a selection tool in olive breeding programs. 相似文献

The possibility of gene transfer between Brassica napus and Sinapis arvensis was evaluated. Six spring-type cultivars of B. napus and four strains of S. arvensis were reciprocally crossed through controlled crosses. No hybrid was yielded from any cross. However, one hybrid with 28 chromosomes was obtained from B. napus×S. arvensis through ovule culture. The hybrid plant was highly sterile and set no seed on open pollination. Two F2 plants, with 35 and 36 chromosomes respectively, were obtained through self-pollination by hand. Backcross of B. napus produced 23 plants carrying some characteristics of S. arvensis, but backcross to S. arvensis failed to produce a plant. The chromosome counts of the BC1F1 plants indicated that gametes with more than nine chromosomes were favoured during the meiosis. The data demonstrated that gene transfer from S. arvensis to B. napus was very difficult under controlled cross and backcross, while to transfer genes from B. napus to S. arvensis would be extremely remote even under the most favorable conditions. 相似文献

Based on faecal larval counts, respiratory rates and live-weight gains, the anthelmintics levamisole and fenbendazole were equally efficacious against primary infection with Dictyocaulus viviparus in calves. Calves that were treated with levamisole or fenbendazole resisted the live-weight depressing impact of reinfection. Treatment somewhat impaired resistance to establishment of the secondary challenge as determined at necropsy. However, compared with previously uninfected controls, the treated animals harboured significantly fewer D viviparus, showing that they still strongly resisted reinfecting worms becoming established. Design: A clinical pathology field study.
Animals: Twenty-two clinically normal horses from four properties in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Procedure: Serum samples from each horse were assayed for gamma glutamyltransferase, alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, and for serum bile acid concentration, albumin and total protein. Serum protein electrophoresis was performed and their amino acid profiles determined. Bromosulphophihalein halfclearance times were measured. Horses were then subjected to a single liver biopsy. Results were analysed by, variance of group means, the Fisher-Irwin exact test, and by sensitivity and specificity calculation.
Results: Horses were classified into 2 groups, of 10 unaffected and 12 subclinically affected, on the basis of liver histology. Significant differences between the unaffected and subclinical groups were observed for gamma glutamyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities (P < 0.01). Gamma glutamyltransferase had sufficient sensitivity (75%) and specificity (90%) to function as a primary screening test for subclinical liver disease in horses exposed to pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Alkaline phosphatase was useful, but with lower sensitivity (58%).
Conclusion: Serum gamma glutamyltransferase activity is a useful screening test for detecting subclinical liver disease in horses exposed to pyrrolizidine alkaloids under field conditions in northern Australia. 相似文献

To mitigate the effects of risks to food safety and infectious disease outbreaks in farmed animals, animal health authorities need to have systems in place to identify and trace the source of identified problems in a timely manner. In the event of emergencies, these systems will allow infected or contaminated premises (and/or animals) to be identified and contained, and will allow the extent of problems to be communicated to consumers and trading partners in a clear and unambiguous manner. The key to achieving these goals is the presence of an effective animal health decision support system that will provide the facilities to record and store detailed information about cases and the population at risk, allowing information to be reported back to decision makers when it is required. Described here are the components of an animal health decision support system, and the ways these components can be used to enhance food safety, responses to infectious disease incursions, and animal health and productivity. Examples are provided to illustrate the benefit these systems can return, using data derived from countries that have such systems (or parts of systems) in place. Emphasis is placed on the features that make particular system components effective, and strategies to ensure that these are kept up to date. 相似文献
