An outbreak of chronic cryptosporidiosis resulting in hypertrophic gastritis occurred in a captive colony of Australian elapid snakes. Two species of the genus Notechiswere involved: Notechis ***ater(Black Tiger Snake) and Notechis scutatus (Eastern or Mainland Tiger Snake). The infection was eventually fatal in all 9 affected snakes. Typical histopathological findings of the stomach included mucosal thickening with cystic dilatation of gastric glands, moderate oedema and fibrosis of the lamina propria, and a mild to moderate patchy infiltration of inflammatory cells. Procedures implemented to contain the outbreak included the use of a formaldehyde-based disinfectant, prompt removal of faecal matter, uneaten and regurgitated food from enclosures, and examination of faecal specimens for Cryptosporidium oocysts and other pathogens. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of postweaning exposure to females on the subsequent sexual performance of young rams. Twenty-five crossbred rams were reared in a group with ovariectomized females from 4.5 to 9 mo of age. Ewes were brought into estrus every 2 wk during this period. A companion group of 23 crossbred rams was not exposed to females following weaning. Four 30-min sexual performance tests were administered at 10 mo of age. Rams reared with males and females (RMF) exhibited more mounts (P less than .001) and more ejaculations (P less than .002) than rams reared only with males (RM). The frequency of successful matings by the latter group did not increase with experience. Nine rams were sexually inactive in the sexual performance tests. Follow-up tests revealed that two of the RMF rams and one RM ram developed and maintained a sexual preference for males. The six remaining rams eventually mated with females when tested in familiar pens and subsequently exhibited normal levels of sexual performance even when tested in an unfamiliar enclosure. Exposure to ewes during the postweaning prepubertal period enhanced sexual performance. However, early exposure to females did not ensure that all males developed sexual preferences for females. The environmental context in which sexual performance tests are administered may inhibit the expression of heterosexual behavior in a small percentage of animals. The objectives of this study were to determine the effectiveness of a visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) system to predict the ultimate tenderness rating of various beef muscles and conclude if a relationship exists between predicted LM shear force and tenderness of other subprimal cuts. Carcasses (n = 768) were scanned with the VIS-NIR system in 2 commercial beef-processing facilities. Carcasses were categorized based on their predicted 14-d LM slice shear force value. After carcass scanning, 100 carcasses were randomly selected based on their tenderness classification, and subprimals (ribeye rolls, clods, knuckles, top sirloins, inside rounds, and eye of rounds) were removed, vacuum-packaged, and transported to the Oklahoma State University Food and Agricultural Products Research Center, where 2.54-cm steaks (n = 6) were fabricated and stored in refrigerated conditions (1 degrees C +/- 1) and aged for 14 d. The center steak from right-side subprimals was designated for slice shear force (LM) or Warner-Bratzler shear force (all other subprimals) analysis. The remaining steaks were categorized based on predicted tenderness taken at 2 d postmortem with the VIS-NIR spectrophotometer and used in a consumer taste study. The test population of carcasses (n = 100) scanned in-plant predicted 27 carcasses as tender, 45 carcasses as intermediate, and 28 carcasses as tough. The VIS-NIR system correctly classified 26 of the 28 (92.9% accuracy) tough carcasses. Overall consumer satisfaction was greatest (P < 0.05) for steaks classified as tender and was intermediate compared with the steaks classified as tough. This study describes longitudinal changes in serum levels of biochemical markers of bone cell activity in a group of 24 thoroughbred foals from birth to 18 months of age. The markers of bone formation included the type I collagen carboxy-terminal propeptide (PICP), the bone-specific isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and osteocalcin (OC). Levels of the cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), a marker of bone resorption, and the N-terminal propeptide of type III collagen (PNIIIP), a marker of soft tissue turnover, were also measured. Levels of all markers fell significantly between birth and 18 months of age (70-80 per cent); this decrease being most marked between 0 and 6 months. However, a transient increase in levels of the markers then occurred between 6 and 14 months of age. The timing of this increase was specific for each parameter. ICTP and OC concentrations increased between October and December. PICP concentrations increased between December and April whereas the increase in PIIINP was coincident with the peak in weight gain between April and June. Changes in BAP concentration were less distinct at this time. Season was shown to have significant effects on the biochemical markers independent from the effect of age. Concentrations of all markers decreased with increasing body weight and at any given age heavier horses had lower marker levels. These results show that biochemical markers of bone cell activity and soft tissue turnover follow characteristic patterns of change in growing thoroughbreds influenced by age, season and bodyweight. The demonstration that the reference ranges for the biochemical markers change from month to month means that single samples from individuals are of little value for monitoring bone cell activity in growing thoroughbreds. 相似文献
