Three innovative approaches to bag and size limits were evaluated in the recreational summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus fishery. Each approach was designed to reduce discard mortality while increasing angler satisfaction, yet still limiting recreational take within management goals. Each was compared to the 2006 legal bag and size limits on party boat trips from New Jersey and New York. Angler-specific catch data were collected during the trips, and anglers completed a questionnaire while sailing back to port. Comparison of questionnaires to observer records revealed that anglers could not accurately recall the number of fish kept or released. Anglers overestimated both kept and discarded fish by a factor of about two. Neither fishing scenario, age, sex, nor years fished significantly influenced the accuracy of survey reports of kept fish. Anglers on three of five boats over-reported landings. Reported landings were nearly accurate on two boats. Survey accuracy for reported discards was influenced by bag-and-size-limit scenario and differed among boats, sexes, and fishing experience, but no predictable pattern was evident. In particular, bias in reporting was unrelated to angler sex, age, experience, and performance on observed trips or any other criterion measured in this study. Anglers preferred the slot limit most and the 2006 legal bag and size limit least. High grading and transfer of fish among anglers were rare occurrences. Our study demonstrated that the summer flounder fishery is a consumptive fishery.  相似文献

Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. (initial weight 130 g, final weight 2800 g) was exposed to continuous light at different stages during the production cycle, and the effect on growth performance, age at first maturation, plasma sex steroid levels and flesh quality were investigated. The entire photoperiod experiment was divided into five phases where the fish in each phase were exposed to either natural photoperiod (N, 65°28′) or continuous light (C). Thus, the following five photoperiod combinations were tested: (a) control group (NNNNN), (b) group 2A (NCNNN), (c) group 2B (NNCNN), (d) group 2C (NNNCN) and (e) continuous light group (CCCCC). Short‐term exposure to continuous light in the first (group 2A) and second (group 2B) growth phases stimulated growth, as the final mean weights of groups 2A and 2B were 11% and 19% higher than those of the control group (NNNNN). Growth in the control group and group 2C was arrested from January to May in the second year. Continuous light (CCCCC) stimulated growth at the beginning of the trial, but the effect diminished at the end. Reduced male plasma 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) and female estradiol 17β (E2) levels were found in groups 2A and 2B and continuous light group, as compared with the control group and group 2C at 26 months post hatch, indicating a higher age at first maturation in these groups. The 11‐KT and E2 levels increased in May–June in group 2A indicating that first maturation was postponed by 6 months in this group, whereas first maturation was postponed by 1 year in group 2B and in the continuous light group. Photoperiod regime only had minor effects on flesh quality traits of the fish.  相似文献

This study describes the influence of 25% human serum albumin (HSA) supplementation on serum albumin level, total protein (TP), colloid osmotic pressure (COP), hospital stay, and survival in dogs with septic peritonitis. Records of 39 dogs with septic peritonitis were evaluated. In the HSA group, initial and post-transfusion TP, albumin, COP, and HSA dose were recorded. In the non-supplemented group, repeated values of TP, albumin, and COP were recorded over their hospitalization. Eighteen dogs survived (53.8% mortality). Repeat albumin values were higher in survivors (mean 23.9 g/L) and elevated repeat albumin values were associated with HSA supplementation. Repeat albumin and TP were higher in the HSA supplemented group (mean 24 g/L and 51.9 g/L, respectively) and their COP increased by 5.8 mmHg. Length of hospitalization was not affected. Twenty-five percent HSA increases albumin, TP, and COP in canine patients with septic peritonitis. Higher postoperative albumin levels are associated with survival.  相似文献

Background

Canine epileptoid cramping syndrome (CECS) is a paroxysmal movement disorder of Border Terriers (BTs). These dogs might respond to a gluten‐free diet.

Objectives

The objective of this study was to examine the clinical and serological effect of a gluten‐free diet in BTs with CECS.

Animals

Six client‐owned BTs with clinically confirmed CECS.

Methods

Dogs were prospectively recruited that had at least a 6‐month history of CECS based on the observed phenomenology (using video) and had exhibited at least 2 separate episodes on different days. Dogs were tested for anti‐transglutaminase 2 (TG2 IgA) and anti‐gliadin (AGA IgG) antibodies in the serum at presentation, and 3, 6, and 9 months after the introduction of a gluten‐free diet. Duodenal biopsies were performed in 1 dog.

Results

Serum TG2 IgA titers were increased in 6/6 BTs (= .006) and AGA IgG titers were increased in 5/6 BTs at presentation compared to those of controls (= .018). After 9 months, there was clinical and serological improvement in all BTs with CECS strictly adhering to a gluten‐free diet (5/5). One dog had persistently increased antibody titers. This dog scavenged horse manure. On the strict introduction of a gluten‐free diet this dog also had an improved clinical and serological response. The diet‐associated improvement was reversible in 2 dogs on completion of the study, both of which suffered a relapse of CECS on the re‐introduction of gluten.

Conclusions

Canine epileptoid cramping syndrome in BTs is a gluten‐sensitive movement disorder triggered and perpetuated by gluten and thus responsive to a gluten‐free diet.  相似文献

Educational events encouraging human–animal interaction include the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. It is estimated that 14% of all disease in the USA caused by Campylobacter spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157, non‐O157 STECs, Listeria monocytogenes, non‐typhoidal Salmonella enterica and Yersinia enterocolitica were attributable to animal contact. This article reviews best practices for organizing events where human–animal interactions are encouraged, with the objective of lowering the risk of zoonotic disease transmission.  相似文献

Understanding the survival and persistence of Escherichia coli in soil with different microbial composition is essential for the accuracy of water quality assessment and microbial source tracking. This microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate the survival pattern of three E. coli strains (originated from soil, dog feces and human feces, separately) in soil with modified microbial community composition. Bile salt No. 3 (BS3) of progressively increased density (0.05%, 0.15%, 0.30% and 0.50%) was added into sandy loam soils and incubated for 90 days. Laboratory cultured E. coli were then inoculated into soil and incubated for another 150 days to monitor their survival pattern. Change of bacterial community diversity by BS3 was detected by both cultivation based and cultivation independent (PCR-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) methods. In general, progressively increased BS3 concentration resulted in decreased CFU counts both at 10 days and 90 days incubation. DGGE analysis indicated only a slight change in bacterial community composition at 10 days but a significant change at 90 days. Cluster analysis suggested that BS3 treatment grouped separately from controls. Survival of E. coli in soil was significantly influenced by the complexity of the microbial community, as die-off rate of E. coli progressively declined with the reduction of microbial community diversity. Differential survival of E. coli under different soil microbial stress highlights the importance of incorporating biotic factors in predictive models for water quality management and microbial source tracking study.  相似文献

1. Because thermophilic Campylobacter spp. are common in chicken flocks reared extensively, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were carried out on organic and free-range farms to determine the onset of colonisation (lag phase) and likely sources of flock infection. 2. For 14 organic and 14 free range flocks, there was a difference in lag phases, with the former being colonized at a mean of 14·1 d in comparison with 31·6 d for the latter. Whereas most free-range flocks became colonized when released on to pasture, those reared organically were usually colonized at the housed brooding stage. 3. Further study of organic flocks on three farms over 7 successive crop cycles confirmed that colonisation was strongly influenced by the prevailing husbandry conditions and was not a consequence of the length of the rearing period. 4. Molecular epidemiological investigations on a farm showing the shortest lag phase, using PFGE typing with two different restriction enzymes (SmaI and KpnI) and flaA SVR sequence typing, revealed that potential sources of colonisation for organic chickens were already present on the farm at the time of chick placement. Such sources included the ante area of the brooding house, surrounding pasture and other livestock being kept on the farm. 5. Overall, the study demonstrated that, under UK conditions, the prevalence of colonisation was greater in extensive flocks (95-100%) than it was for conventional broilers (55%), similar to the situation in other countries, but all three management systems showed comparable levels of caecal carriage in positive birds (log(10)/g 6·2-6·7).  相似文献
