Two commercial broiler pure lines that were previously identified to differ in their susceptibility to Marek's disease (MD) were line-crossed to generate an F1 population. Eight F1 males were randomly mated to four or five F1 females to produce an F2 test population that would be segregating for genes affecting MD. All F2 progeny (four hatches) were pedigreed at hatch and placed in colony houses as nonvaccinated. At 5 days of age, they were challenged intraabdominally with MD virus RB1B. Clinical signs, mortality, and gross and microscopic lesions were recorded during the MD challenge. At 8 wk postchallenge, all remaining birds were euthanatized and necropsied. During the MD challenge of the first two hatches, we observed that several severely stunted broilers originated from certain families and the differences in body weight among birds appeared as early as 3 wk postchallenge. To confirm this observation, body weight at 6 wk postchallenge was determined for all surviving birds in hatches 3 and 4 (n = 242). Genetic variation in body weight among broiler sire families was apparent; the average body weight for males at this time was 2.07 kg, whereas with females, it was 1.87 kg. At least 12.2% of the broilers, including both sexes, weighed less than 1 kg ("severely stunted") at this time. The incidence of these growth-stunted birds within each broiler sire family ranged from 0 to 26% and for dam families, 0 to 60%. Correlation analyses between stunting and other MD-associated traits revealed that the incidence of stunting had a significant and positive association with paralysis (r = 0.50). Therefore, the data suggest that there may be a genetic component affecting body weight loss during MD infection. The genetic component is speculated to affect susceptibility to MD paralysis with an indirect effect on the body weight of birds. The significance of this finding is best exemplified by the identification of a broiler sire family with over 26% of its progeny affected by this MD-associated trait.  相似文献

Fungal dermatitis was diagnosed in two captive gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) and four harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) between 1992 and 1994. Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Malassezia spp., and Yarrowia (Candida) lipolytica were isolated. Erythematous, thickened, alopecic skin lesions were present on the face and on the flippers, particularly around the nail bed. The two most important environmental factors associated with development of fungal dermatitis appeared to be excessive chlorination of pool water and warm water temperature.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: To determine the association between owner‐reported noise and findings during dynamic respiratory endoscopy (DRE) in a large case series. Hypothesis: The sensitivity of owner‐reported noise for dynamic upper respiratory tract obstructions in horses is low, and the specificity is high. Methods: One hundred horses underwent DRE for the investigation of abnormal respiratory noise and/or poor performance. The association of abnormal noise with findings during DRE was evaluated. Results: Eighty‐five horses underwent DRE for the investigation of abnormal respiratory noise. Of these, 82% were found to have one or more obstructive upper respiratory tract abnormalities during DRE. Forty‐eight percent of horses reported to gurgle, rattle or make a rough noise were diagnosed with solitary palatal dysfunction. A further 24% with this history showed palatal dysfunction in combination with an additional abnormality. Twenty‐seven percent of horses with a history of whistling or roaring showed some degree of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. Seven percent of horses with a history of whistling or roaring had vocal cord collapse as a solitary condition, whereas 40% had vocal cord collapse and another abnormality. The sensitivity of abnormal respiratory noise for any obstruction of the upper portion of the respiratory tract was high (84%), while the specificity was low (25%). Characteristic owner reported noise patterns showed moderate to low sensitivity for specific conditions. Whistling and roaring showed the highest specificity (≥80%) for laryngeal dysfunction. Conclusion: Diagnosis of upper respiratory tract obstructions based solely on owner‐reported noise and performance history may result in incomplete diagnoses. Clinical relevance: DRE should be performed in horses with abnormal respiratory noise to rule out complex conditions of the upper portion of the respiratory tract.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the number, morphology and ultrastructure of preantral ovarian follicles of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) foetuses at different ages. Quantification revealed number of primordial, primary and secondary follicles of 48 857 ± 17 506, 26 000 ± 20 452, 18 428 ± 10 875 and 18 375 ± 19 690, 225 ± 349, 326 ± 288 at 12–34 cm and 35–60 cm crown rump length (CRL), respectively. Follicular diameter values were 28.9 (±3.4), 34.7 (±5.9) and 59.4 (±12.6) μm; oocyte diameters were 21.7 (±2.8), 24.3 (±3.4) and 33.0 (±7.7) μm, and the numbers of follicular cells in the follicle equatorial section were 7.1 (±1.4), 12.0 (±2.4) and 13.8 (±2.4) for primordial, primary and secondary follicles, respectively. The primordial follicle consisted of an oocyte surrounded by a layer of flattened follicular cells with a normally eccentric oocyte nucleus. Dispersed Golgi complex, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, rounded mitochondria and several lipid vesicles were observed in the cytoplasm and cell junctions between the follicle cell membranes and the oocyte. This work describes the number, morphometry and ultrastructure of preantral follicles of buffalo foetuses, concluding that folliculogenesis is established between 8 and 34 cm CRL and that follicle number varies individually and according to age and that further studies are needed in this species.  相似文献

The effect of peak lactation on the activities of a number of enzymes of glucose and lipid metabolism of perirenal and subcutaneous adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, liver, kidney cortex and mammary parenchyma of sheep are described. Enzymes studied included hexokinase (glucose utilization), pyruvate carboxylase (gluconeogenesis), pyruvate dehydrogenase (glucose oxidation and production of acetyl CoA for fatty acid synthesis), acetyl CoA carboxylase (fatty acid synthesis) and glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (fatty acid esterification). Major changes that were found include a decrease in activities of enzymes of fatty acid synthesis and esterification in adipose tissues, decreased activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase in muscle and adipose tissues and increased pyruvate carboxylase; there was no change in activities of enzyme of fatty acid esterification in liver. Activities of hexokinase, acetyl CoA carboxylase and glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase have been estimated per tissue; this shows the quantitative importance of limiting glucose utilization by muscle and of suppression of fatty acid synthesis in adipose tissue for efficient partitioning of nutrients for milk production.  相似文献
