We recorded lesions of moderate-to-severe pneumonia (>or=10% lung surface area affected; "pneumonia") in 1,899,556 lambs submitted to three New Zealand abbatoirs between December 2000 and September 2001. The average prevalence of pneumonia ranged between 7 and 13%, by abbatoir. We ran a two-level mixed-effects binomial logistic-regression model with the prevalence of pneumonia as the outcome, and adjusting for abbatoir and month. The intracluster correlations for batch (slaughter lambs from the same farm sent at the same time) and farm were 31.3 and 12.4%, respectively. (We also noted threefold differences in odds across abbatoirs, and >30-fold differences among slaughter months.) Case flocks (those in the upper quintile of pneumonia prevalence) generally were not clustered in the spatial incidence-risk analysis (after adjusting for flock-level and batch level effects, and as compared to flocks in the lower two quintiles). We therefore concluded that the risk of moderate-to-severe pneumonia-lesion prevalence detectable at slaughter of lambs was determined at the flock and batch level, rather than at the spatial level.  相似文献

This study investigated the nature and frequency of the contacts that occur between dogs, and between dogs and people, by means of a questionnaire survey of 260 dog-owning households in a community in Cheshire, uk. The contacts were highly variable and were affected by the size, sex and age of the dog, individual dog behaviours, human behaviours and human preferences in the management of the dog. A number of situations were identified that may be important in relation to zoonoses, including sleeping areas, playing behaviours, greeting behaviours, food sources, walking, disposal of faeces, veterinary preventive treatment and general hygiene.  相似文献

The clinical, pathological and biochemical findings of a study of 30 Poll Hereford, Hereford, Poll Hereford cross or Hereford cross calves affected with branched chain ketoacid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) complex deficiency or maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) are presented. In breeding studies, 6 of 21 calves from obligate heterozygote matings were affected with MSUD, suggesting the disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Calves were clinically affected from birth, but there were variations in the subsequent course of progressive deterioration of central nervous system function. Concentrations of the branched chain amino acids and keto acids were elevated in pre-suckle plasma and cerebellar water content was higher in affected calves. Activity of BCKAD complex was minimal in fibroblasts cultured from an affected calf. Spongiform encephalopathy and elevated ratios of the branched to straight chain amino acids in formalin fixed cerebral tissue were found in a stillborn foetus and a 3-month-old Hereford calf. These findings suggest the disease occurs prenatally and that a delayed form may exist.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the induction dose requirements of thiopental using two different infusion rates for induction of anaesthesia in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized study. ANIMALS: Fifty, healthy (ASA I or II) client-owned dogs with a mean age of 4.1 years and a mean mass of 20.4 kg undergoing elective surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Animals were randomly assigned to receive an infusion of 2.5% thiopental at a rate of either 0.1 ml kg(-1) minute(-1) or 0.4 ml kg(-1)minute(-1), 30-40 minutes after pre-anaesthetic medication with intramuscular acepromazine (0.025 mg kg(-1)) and pethidine (3.5 mg kg(-1)). Thiopental administration was controlled by a precision syringe driver. Statistical analyses of the results, using the outcome 'mg kg(-1) required for induction' (log-transformed) included unpaired t-tests for all categorical data (thiopental infusion rate, breed, sex, obesity, sedation quality) and univariable linear regression for continuous variables (mass, age). All variables were then considered in a multivariable linear regression model. The quality of induction with the two different infusion rates was also assessed. RESULTS: After controlling for quality of sedation, the thiopental induction dose requirement was significantly less (p < 0.001) with the slower infusion rate (median = 7.5 mg kg(-1); range 4.9-13.7) compared with the faster infusion rate (median =11.0 mg kg(-1); range 6.6-18.0). The quality of sedation also affected the dose required (p = 0.03). The slower infusion rate was associated with a significantly poorer induction quality (p = 0.03) [corrected] CONCLUSIONS: Slow thiopental infusion (0.1 ml kg(-1) minute(-1)) for anaesthesia induction after acepromazine/pethidine pre-anaesthetic medication reduced the induction dose requirement, although the quality of induction was inferior. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The induction dose of thiopental was reduced with a slower administration rate and so slow administration is recommended in thiopental-sensitive animals.  相似文献

AIM: To identity perceptions of farmers with respect to advantages of hogget lambing and to identify optimal management strategies for hogget lambing used in New Zealand. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to 1,038 sheep farmers in New Zealand who had indicated their hoggets would be lambing in 2002. Information was gathered on the practice of hogget lambing in New Zealand, in particular on the numbers and breeds of hoggets and rams used, selection criteria used for hoggets, use of teasers (vasectomised rams), length of mating period, use of mating crayons, vaccinations, medications and mineral supplements given, level of feed offered, use of pregnancy scanning, management during pregnancy and lambing, number of lambs present at docking, and shearing policies for hoggets. Farmers were also asked to indicate the relative importance of five stated reasons for choosing to have their hoggets mated in 2002. RESULTS: A total of 629 (60.6%) responses were incorporated in the analysis, and the average percentage of hogget lambing was 60%. Use of vaccinations, length of the mating period, number of rams used, breed of hogget, weight at mating, management during lactation, and shearing policy were associated (p<0.05) with the lambing performance of hoggets, in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that to ensure high lambing percentages (LP) in hoggets in New Zealand, sheep farmers should: vaccinate hoggets against toxoplasmosis and campylobacteriosis; utilise a 40-day mating period; use 2.6- 3.5% of rams during mating; incorporate Finn or East Friesian genetics; ensure liveweights at mating are as high as possible; manage single- and multiple-bearing/-rearing hoggets separately during the lambing and lactation periods; and shear hoggets pre-mating.  相似文献

Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to the continued successful use of antimicrobial agents for the treatment of bacterial infections. While the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from man has been studied extensively, less work has been undertaken in companion animals, particularly horses. Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus has been identified as a cause of infections, with a low prevalence of nasal carriage by horses in the community but higher for hospitalised horses. Molecular characterisation has shown methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains either to be predominantly of types associated with horses or of sequence type ST398. Antimicrobial‐resistant Escherichia coli (including multidrug‐resistant and extended spectrum β‐lactamase‐producing isolates) have caused infections and been documented in faecal carriage by horses, with many significant resistance mechanisms identified. More sporadic reports and molecular characterisation exist for resistance in other bacteria such as enterococci, Salmonella, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas species. Limited work has been undertaken evaluating risk factors and much of the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from horses remains to be determined.  相似文献
