Giardia contamination in the Grand River Watershed (south‐western Ontario, Canada) was monitored from 2005 to 2013 as part of FoodNet Canada. Our study objectives were to describe the temporal pattern of Giardia occurrence and determine whether water quality parameters and bacterial indicators could act as effective markers for Giardia occurrence. Water samples were collected monthly from the Grand River near a drinking water intake point (2005–2013) and also collected intermittently from other areas in the watershed during the study period. Samples were tested for Giardia cysts using the US EPA method 1623. Samples were also tested for chemical and microbial water quality indicators. Univariable and multivariable linear regression models were built to examine whether temporal, water quality and bacterial indicators were associated with Giardia cyst concentration. Giardia cysts were identified in 89% of samples (n = 228), with highest measured concentrations downstream of a waste water treatment plant outfall. Year and season were found to be predictors for Giardia occurrence. Concentrations were significantly higher in the winter and fall compared to the summer, and significantly higher in 2007 compared to other study years. After controlling for season, year and sampling location, dissolved oxygen was the only variable significantly associated with Giardia cyst concentration. Seasonal peaks in Giardia cyst concentrations in samples collected near the intake for the drinking water plant did not align with the seasonal peak in human Giardiasis cases in this region that are reported annually by public health authorities. This suggests that the risk of contracting Giardiasis from treated drinking water in this community is possibly low when the treatment plant is functioning adequately. Instead, waterborne exposure is likely the result of seasonal behaviours surrounding recreational water use. The monitoring programs needed to design control strategies differ from those required to assess the impact of the strategies on air quality. The former are short-term and intensive. They are designed to obtain the data required to apply an urban-scale grid model, like the Urban Airshed Model, or a combination of an urban-scale and regional-scale model, like the Regional Oxidant Model, to an area without having to assume important input data. Such measurements include three-dimensional pollutant and meteorological measurements throughout the modeling domain. Detailed and accurate emissions inventories are also required. Model validation should compare not only the O3 predictions with actual data, but also include comparisons for NO x , individual volatile organic compounds (VOC), and if possible, additional species such as PAN, H2O2, formaldehyde, and HNO3. To assess the impact of control strategies, long-term monitoring networks that measure O3, NO x and speciated VOC are needed. O3 trends should be examined using robust, meteorologically-adjusted O3 statistics. Such statistics need to be related to a robust National Ambient Air Quality Standard. 相似文献

Thermal infrared spectra of the martian atmosphere taken by the Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) were used to determine the atmospheric temperatures in the planetary boundary layer and the column-integrated optical depth of aerosols. Mini-TES observations show the diurnal variation of the martian boundary layer thermal structure, including a near-surface superadiabatic layer during the afternoon and an inversion layer at night. Upward-looking Mini-TES observations show warm and cool parcels of air moving through the Mini-TES field of view on a time scale of 30 seconds. A high-resolution deuterium profile is now available along the entire European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica Dome C ice core, extending this climate record back to marine isotope stage 20.2, approximately 800,000 years ago. Experiments performed with an atmospheric general circulation model including water isotopes support its temperature interpretation. We assessed the general correspondence between Dansgaard-Oeschger events and their smoothed Antarctic counterparts for this Dome C record, which reveals the presence of such features with similar amplitudes during previous glacial periods. We suggest that the interplay between obliquity and precession accounts for the variable intensity of interglacial periods in ice core records. 相似文献

Microfilariae were isolated from a Katrina rescue dog that remained microfilariaemic despite successful adulticidal treatments and repeated treatment with high doses of macrocyclic lactones (MLs). The microfilariae were genotyped at two P-glycoprotein single nucleotide polymorphic sites which had been found to correlate with reduced sensitivity to MLs. The genetic polymorphism (GG-GG), previously found to be associated with insensitivity to MLs in vitro, was present at a frequency of 45.3% in microfilariae that survived repeated treatments with high doses of ML anthelmintics.
