Displaced sagittal cheek tooth fractures are a cause of oral pain, quidding and apical infection. Intraoral extraction is the preferred technique to remove affected teeth, but can be difficult due to displaced and friable fracture fragments. Stabilising fracture fragments via filling of the fracture space with polymethymethacrylate (PMMA) prior to removal may be a useful method to facilitate intraoral extraction. Case details were examined retrospectively. A total of 22 cheek teeth required extraction in 20 horses because of displaced sagittal fractures. Clinical diagnoses were made using oral examination, oral endoscopy, skull radiography and computed tomography. All procedures were performed in standing, sedated horses in stocks. Fracture spaces were cleaned and packed with PMMA and teeth removed using a routine intraoral extraction technique. Digital photographs of extracted teeth were taken and tooth measurements calibrated using digital image software. Intraoperative difficulties, as well as post-operative complications were recorded. A total of 21 maxillary and one mandibular cheek teeth were extracted. All maxillary teeth had advanced infundibular caries. Intraoral extraction was successful in 16 cases; six were unsuccessful and required repulsion due to tooth fragmentation or abnormal dental anatomy. In 11 cases, maxillary or conchofrontal sinus trephination was performed to either treat sinusitis, repulse the tooth, or both. Two horses developed short-term complications following local anaesthesia of the maxillary nerve. The mean ratio of fracture depth to tooth length was 0.59 and mean ratio of fracture width to tooth width 0.53. The limitations of the study are its small sample size, retrospective nature and lack of control group to compare extraction success in PMMA and non-PMMA groups. It was concluded that using PMMA to stabilise displaced sagittal fractures in equine cheek teeth is a simple, effective method of facilitating intraoral extraction and may reduce the need for more invasive procedures. 相似文献

The kinematic strategy encoded in motor cortical areas for classic straight-line reaching is remarkably simple and consistent across subjects, despite the complicated musculoskeletal dynamics that are involved. As tasks become more challenging, however, different conscious strategies may be used to improve perceived behavioral performance. We identified additional spatial information that appeared both in single neurons and in the population code of monkey dorsal premotor cortex when obstacles impeded direct reach paths. The neural correlate of movement planning varied between subjects in a manner consistent with the use of different strategies to optimize task completion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the conformational changes in the distal forelimb of horses following heel elevation of 15 degrees and greater. An experimental study with repeated, within-horse measurements. PROCEDURE: Five clinically normal, mixed-breed horses were used to determine distal forelimb conformation following heel elevation from 0 to 45 degrees in 15 degree increments. Data were also compared to conformation of the limb in a Kimzey splint. Conformation was determined using lateral to medial radiographic projections. Conformation parameters assessed included measurement of apparent lengths of digital flexor tendons from the origin of their accessory ligaments to the points of insertion, and the joint angles of the distal limb. RESULTS: For angles of heel elevation from 15 to 45 degrees, the degree of joint angulation increased (increasing flexion) with heel elevation for the metacarpophalangeal, and proximal and distal interphalangeal joints. Conversely, the measured apparent lengths of the digital flexor tendons in the distal limb, decreased. CONCLUSION: The data supports the practice of elevating the heel (greater than 15 degrees) for conditions in which decreased fetlock extension may be desired such as with laceration or injury to the digital flexor tendons. Further study is required to determine whether heel elevation greater than 15 degrees reduces in vivo digital flexor tendon tension and also to ensure that the marked flexion of the distal interphalangeal joint with greater heel elevation is not detrimental over a prolonged period that may be required for the rehabilitation of flexor tendon injuries in the horse. 相似文献

Studies were carried out to investigate whether the administration of oestradiol to laying hens induced fatty liver-haemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS). Short term oestradiol administration (up to 6 d) significantly increased liver size and plasma lipid concentration but had no effect on liver lipid concentration or hepatic lipogenic enzyme activities. Longer-term hormone treatment (up to 28 d) again significantly increased liver size and plasma lipid concentration. Liver lipid concentration was substantially reduced and lipogenic enzyme activity significantly reduced in oestradiol-treated birds. These effects had some similarities to those seen in oestrogenised immature birds and were additive to the effects of endogenous oestrogen in the laying bird. There were no deaths from FLHS and oestradiol treatment did not cause liver haemorrhages or affect egg production. 相似文献

Abstract In soilless production systems, water quality can have a major impact on the growth of plants. It has become evident that moderately alkaline water is a problem for tobacco transplant growers in some regions of Kentucky. To determine the level of bicarbonate (HCO3 ?) alkalinity, which is detrimental to burley tobacco transplants, and to better understand the effect of calcium (Ca) and the interaction of HCO3 ? and Ca on the growth of burley tobacco transplants grown in a float system, three levels of CaCl2 (25,75, and 125 mg L?1 Ca++) in factorial combination with five levels of HCO3 ? (0, 122, 244, 366, and 488 mg HCO3 ?L?1) were tested in nutrient solution culture. Four‐week‐old burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. var. KY‐907) seedlings were transplanted to 18‐L containers filled with aerated Hoagland's solution with the different levels of calcium and HCO3 ? for two weeks. High HCC3 ? alkalinity caused root system damage and plant growth inhibition, but did not induce iron (Fe) chlorosis. A significantly lower concentration of Zinc (Zn) was measured in the shoots as HCO3 ? levels in solution increased. In the presence of high calcium, plant growth was not significantly improved. No significant interaction of HCO3 ? and Ca on growth or nutrient uptake was observed in this study. 相似文献

Summary Photosynthesis is a trait that should be improved in a selection program for yield potential of maize (Zea mays L.). We measured leaf CO2-exchange rate (CER), an estimate of photosynthetic efficiency, of a complete diallel (parents, F1 crosses, and their reciprocals) among eight inbred lines (4 with low and 4 with high CER) from the Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic maize population. Measurements were made during vegetative (CER 1) and grain filling (CER 2) stages of growth, and the experiment was conducted two years at one location. We measured large differences among crosses and significant heterosis for high CER at CER 1 (0.0 to 25.1%) and CER 2 (0.0 to 53.8%). Several crosses exhibited overdominant phenotypes for high CER at both growth stages, and one cross showed significant overdominance for low CER at CER 1. General combining ability effects (gca) were the largest components of among-cross variation at both CER 1 and CER 2. Specific combining ability (sca) also was significant at both growth stages, but gca effects were 9.4 and 4.8 times larger than sca effects at CER 1 and CER 2, respectively. Furthermore, high CER lines showed positive gca effects, and low CER lines showed negative gca effects at each stage. Maternal and reciprocal effects were not significant; thus, CER in these crosses was controlled largely by additive effects of nuclear genes. A high positive genotypic correlation (r=0.74) between CER 1 and CER 2 suggested that selection at either growth stage would improve CER throughout the growing season.Journal Paper No. J-9023 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Exp.
