This paper focuses on the biological and chemical variability of four yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) accessions cultivated under field conditions. Significant variations in tuber shape, weight, content of oligofructans, as well as in leaf isozymes, phenolics, and relative DNA contents were found. Accessions 6 and 88 were the most productive (up to 3.01 and 3.74 kg/plant); accession 48 was the most balanced from the yield aspect in three vegetative periods. A significantly higher content of beta-(2-->1) oligofructans was noted in accessions 48 and 88 as compared to 6 and 60. No difference in sucrose, glucose, and fructose level was observed. Only accession 6 exhibited separate acid phosphatase and esterase isoforms. Accessions 6 and 60 had the highest content of phenolics, and accession 88 had the lowest relative DNA content. Large yacon intraspecific variation may be useful in future detailed research as a good background for breeding, growing, and utilization in industrial processing.  相似文献

Two strains of lactobacilli (Lactobacillus acidophilus T-135 and Lactobacillus plantarum 4/97) were selected in order to study their inhibitory properties against frequent udder pathogens (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Salmonella enteritidis and Bacillus pumilus), their production of organic acids as well as their ability to survive on the teat skin, the teat duct mucosa and in a lipoid emulsion. Lasius flavus is a dominant mound-building ant species of temperate grasslands that significantly modifies soil parameters. These modifications are usually the result of workers’ activities such as food accumulation and nest construction. An alternative hypothesis that could explain changes in soil is colony founding in areas of higher soil fertility.In our study we investigated several soil parameters sampled in 10 ant nests and adjacent (control) plots in mountain grassland in Slovakia. The alternative hypothesis was tested by comparing occupied and abandoned mounds. While we found increased concentrations of available P and K in the nests, concentrations of total C, total N, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were lower there. We propose that differences found between the soil of nests and control plots are entirely a product of ant activity during mound occupancy and not due to initial soil differences during nest establishment. This was confirmed by the comparison of occupied and abandoned nests in which the soil fertility of abandoned nests was similar to conditions in the surrounding soil.Along with the modification of soil chemistry, we recorded changes in soil physical properties and the vertical distribution of nutrients. Ant nests were characterized by the dominance of 0.02–0.1 mm particles and lower bulk density. In the same habitat, nutrient concentrations did not change along the vertical gradient in contrast to control plots where soil nutrients decreased and bulk density increased with depth. Root biomass followed the vertical pattern observed with nutrients: in control plots, most roots were concentrated in the uppermost layer (0–3 cm), whereas they were evenly distributed along the vertical gradient in the nests. We also found that rhizome internodes of Agrostis capillaris were thinner and longer in plants from the mounds. Changes in soil physical properties, vertical distribution of nutrients and root biomass in the nests are most probably a consequence of mounding and soil mixing (bioturbation), which has been less reported on in ant-soil studies.  相似文献

The heat generated during wildfires often leads to increases in soil water repellency. Above a critical heating threshold, however, its destruction occurs. Although the temperature thresholds for repellency destruction are relatively well established, little is known about the specific changes in the soil organic matter that are responsible for repellency destruction. Here we report on the analysis of initially water repellent surface soil samples (Dystric Cambisol, 0–5 cm depth) by transmission Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis before and after destruction of its water repellency by heating to 225 °C in order to investigate heating-induced changes in soil organic matter (SOM) composition. Although assignment of absorption bands is made difficult by overlapping of some bands, it was possible to distinguish bands relevant for hydrophobicity of SOM in the soil before heat treatment. The most significant decrease in absorbance following water repellency destruction took place in the frequency area corresponding to stretching vibrations of aliphatic structures within SOM. The results suggest that besides a general decrease of SOM content during heating, the loss of soil water repellence is primarily caused by the selective degradation of aliphatic structures.  相似文献

Current knowledge of the within-site variability of major stand structural features in beech dominated natural forests is limited. Numerous studies have used just several small plots for characterizations of natural stands, but this may lead to generalizations based on unreliable results. This study shows how major stand structural features vary at the local scale, and how suitable sampling may reflect this variability. Stem position maps of three natural forests in the Czech Republic (Zofin 71 ha, Salajka 19 ha and Zakova hora 17 ha) were used. Each vector stem position map representing all live and dead trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm was intensively analyzed using square sample plots of different sizes (10 × 10 m; 20 × 20 m; 30 × 30 m; 50 × 50 m; 100 × 100 m; 140 × 140 m and 200 × 200 m). Basic statistics (mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, min., and max.) were calculated for every plot size and each of six major stand features: density, basal area and volume of living trees, volume of course woody debris, total volume and proportion of course woody debris in total volume.  相似文献

The presence of coarse woody debris in forests is an important naturalness criterion as well as a biodiversity indicator. Decaying logs provide habitat for many organisms including vascular plants. The aims of this study are to describe the colonization of decaying logs by vascular plants in a lowland alluvial forest and to assess the impact of fallen logs on the biodiversity of the herb layer. We investigated 493 logs in the Ranšpurk National Nature Reserve in southern Moravia. For each log, we recorded species of vascular plants rooting on its surface. Decaying logs were characterized by their dimensions, woody species and decay class. Vascular plants rooted on 279 surveyed logs. Decaying logs were colonized by 79 species of vascular plants. Terrain relief was found to be a significant factor for colonizing species. Our study did not find any significant spatial pattern of colonized logs with regard to the distribution of vascular plants, intensity of colonization or the ecological demands of colonizers. The colonization of lying logs by vascular plants was significantly influenced by the species of logs, their surface area and decay class. Species composition of vascular plants on decaying logs and that on mineral soil were significantly different. Demonstrably higher frequencies of Dryopteris carthusiana and Impatiens parviflora were found on decaying logs. The presence of decaying logs and the microsites they create is important for total forest biodiversity including the diversity of vascular plants. We recommend increasing the proportion of decaying logs even in commercial forests.
