Background  

Understanding the effects of anthropogenically-driven changes in global temperature, atmospheric carbon dioxide and biodiversity on the functionality of marine ecosystems is crucial for predicting and managing the associated impacts. Coastal ecosystems are important sources of carbon (primary production) to shelf waters and play a vital role in global nutrient cycling. These systems are especially vulnerable to the effects of human activities and will be the first areas impacted by rising sea levels. Within these coastal ecosystems, microalgal assemblages (microphytobenthos: MPB) are vital for autochthonous carbon fixation. The level of in situ production by MPB mediates the net carbon cycling of transitional ecosystems between net heterotrophic or autotrophic metabolism. In this study, we examine the interactive effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (370, 600, and 1000 ppmv), temperature (6°C, 12°C, and 18°C) and invertebrate biodiversity on MPB biomass in experimental systems. We assembled communities of three common grazing invertebrates (Hydrobia ulvae, Corophium volutator and Hediste diversicolor) in monoculture and in all possible multispecies combinations. This experimental design specifically addresses interactions between the selected climate change variables and any ecological consequences caused by changes in species composition or richness.  相似文献

The effect of different polishing techniques on loss of mineral elements from rice grains was quantified using a panel of indica and tropical japonica genotypes, previously classified as differing in ease of polishing. Gradients in mineral elements across the bran-endosperm interface were quantified using micro-scaled precision abrasive polishing in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy. Frictional polishing, similar to that of commercial mills, i.e. 8–10% loss of grain weight, reduced the concentration of Fe, Mg, P, K and Mn by 60–80% in all genotypes. Following gentler polishing (3–5% weight loss), genotypes classified as difficult to polish showed smaller decreases in Fe, Mg, P, K and Mn compared to genotypes classified as easy to polish. The concentration of other elements, e.g. Zn, S, Ca, Cu, Mo and Cd, showed comparable reductions (<30%) irrespective of polishing technique or ease of polishing. The different patterns of polishing losses of minerals reflected their distribution within the grain. Five-fold differences in the reduction of Zn concentration during polishing were observed for different genotypes which started with similar Zn concentrations in the unpolished grain, thus showing clear potential for selecting genotypes with reduced polishing losses of Zn.  相似文献

Here, the short term effects of artificial and insect defoliation by larvae of Paropsisterna agricola on growth, biomass allocation and photosynthetic capacity of Eucalyptus globulus seedlings were compared in a glasshouse experiment. The artificial defoliation was carried out to closely resemble the spatial patterns observed for insect defoliation.
  • ? Height and diameter increments were reduced as a result of insect defoliation, whereas artificial defoliation had no significant effect on height. Increased photosynthetic capacity was observed in response to both treatments, but the magnitude of this increase was larger in insect-than in artificially-defoliated seedlings. Significant reductions in foliar carbohydrate content and total biomass were noticeable in artificially-defoliated seedlings. Although the foliar carbohydrate levels also decreased across the crown zones following insect defoliation treatment, seedlings allocated a large amount of their biomass in the branches of the damaged zone.

    In 1974, potatoes(Solanum tuberosum L.) were grown on unmulched, clear, and black slitted polyethylene. Production and tuber specific gravity of the potatoes were determined at four nitrogen rates (0, 75, 150 and 225 lb/A) and with two varieties (Superior and Katahdin). In 1975, potatoes were grown on unmulched and clear slitted polyethylene with and without trickle irrigation. Nitrogen increased marketable yields up to 150 lb/A on the unmulched potatoes. Irrigation increased the marketable yields of potatoes on both unmulched and mulched plots. However, no advantage was found in marketable yields, specific gravities or tuber sizes of the potatoes grown on either clear or black slitted polyethylene mulch over conventional unmulched soil for the ‘Superior’ or ‘Katahdin’ varieties.  相似文献

    To explore the impact of moulting and short‐term chilled storage of spermatophores on the sperm quality for a commercially important penaeid prawn, spermatozoa of Penaeus monodon from early (B‐C), middle (D0‐1) and late (D2‐3) moult stages were compared for sperm quality parameters relating to the structural integrity of plasma membrane (Viab%), acrosome (AR%) and DNA (SDF%) after being stored at 4°C for 0–26 days. The three different sperm extenders used for chilled storage included artificial lobster haemolymph (AH), calcium free saline (CS) and filtered seawater (FS); two storage conditions were applied either as a free sperm suspension or retained within the intact spermatophore. Results showed that (a) the lowest natural AR% was shown for B‐C spermatozoa in CS whereas the highest levels were for B‐C, D0‐1 and D2‐3 spermatozoa in FS and D2‐3 spermatozoa in AH; (b) the calcium ionophore A23187 agent used in this study was able to increase the mean AR% by 6.22%; (c) the Viab% was significantly lower in CS than that in FS; (d) the SDF% significantly increased over the period of chilled storage for B‐C and D0‐1 spermatozoa, while the SDF% of D2‐3 spermatozoa was initially elevated and did not change significantly over time; and (e) there was no difference in sperm quality between two storage conditions. This study has successfully demonstrated the moult‐related variance in the percentages of acrosome‐reacted and DNA‐damaged spermatozoa, providing evidence of moult‐related spermatophore renewal cycle in this species.  相似文献

    Three digestion experiments and one growth experiment were conducted to determine site, extent and ruminal rate of forage digestion and rate and efficiency of gain by cattle offered alfalfa haylage supplemented with corn or dry corn gluten feed (CGF). In Exp. 1, eight steers were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets with substitution of corn for 0, 20, 40 or 60% of haylage in a 4 X 4 latin square. Increasing dietary corn substitution increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion by steers but decreased (P less than .05) rate of in situ alfalfa DM digestion. In Exp. 2, five heifers were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets with increasing dietary levels of CGF in a 5 X 5 latin square. Increasing dietary CGF increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion by heifers. In Exp. 3 and 4, cattle were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets containing either 20 or 60% corn or CGF. In Exp. 3, supplementation increased (P less than .05) OM and NDF digestion but level X supplement source interaction (P less than .05) occurred, with added CGF increasing OM and NDF digestion more than added corn. In Exp. 4, supplementation improved (P less than .05) DM intake, daily gain and feed efficiency. Dry matter intake and daily gain were greater (P less than .05) for 60% supplementation than for 20% supplementation. Overall, whereas increasing the level of dietary supplement increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion, only corn addition decreased (P less than .05) rate of in situ alfalfa DM digestion. Daily gains and feed efficiencies were similar in cattle fed either corn or CGF with alfalfa haylage.  相似文献

    We used DNA probes to study dietary effects on the prokaryotic population in the rumen. Procedures used to isolate and quantify prokaryotic 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) from the rumen using universal and species-specific DNA probes were evaluated. In this experiment, three ruminally fistulated steers were fed orchard-grass hay, and ruminal digesta were collected at 0, 3, and 9 h after offering hay (0800). Samples of ruminal digesta were taken from the interior portion of the digesta mat and from the fluid below the mat in the dorsal rumen. Freezing (-65 degrees C) and blending samples both increased (P less than .07) the yield of 16S rRNA from ruminal digesta. Extraction of prokaryotic rRNA was greater (P less than .04) when phenol buffered with sodium acetate was used than when it was buffered with hydroxymethyl-amino-methane. Prokaryotic 16S rRNA concentration of the fluid phase was similar (P greater than .10) at 0, 3, and 9 h after offering hay. Prokaryotic 16S rRNA concentration of the mat phase increased up to the 9 h after feeding. The proportion of Fibrobacter succinogenes remained constant in both digesta phases at all times measured. From these data we concluded that DNA probes can be used to monitor bacterial population shifts in the rumen.  相似文献
