Anthropogenic nutrient sources (especially nitrogen and phosphorus) released into the Long Island Sound (LIS) causes excessive phytoplankton growth resulting in hypoxic conditions. Atmospheric deposition (both wet and dry deposition) has significant effect on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Two dry deposition monitoring sites were established along the north shore of LIS in February 1991. Wet and dry deposition samples were collected since then. A dry deposition velocity model, based on the characteristics of the water surface, was used to estimate the loading as well as the seasonal variability (dynamics) of nutrients in atmospheric deposition to LIS. The average nitrogen flux from each site was 6.64 kg (as-N) ha-yr-1. The total atmospheric nitrogen loading was estimated to be 2240 metric tons yr-1 which correcponds to 2.5% of the estimated total nitrogen loading to the Sound from all sources. The average phosphorus flux was 37.44 g (as-P) ha-yr-1. The total atmospheric phosphorus loading to the Sound was estimated to be 12.62 metric tons yr-1. The results show that wet deposition was the predominant source of atmospheric contribution to the Sound. 相似文献

Over the last decades, removal of potentially toxic and hazardous materials has received a great deal of attention in the field of environmental pollution. Problems associated with the disposal of the wastes of different kinds of industries led to studies of the sorption?Cuptake properties of clay minerals and zeolites. In the present research, the behavior of vermiculite particles ranging between 425 and 500???m in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed column for uptake of Cs, Hg, and Mn ions from aqueous solutions and wastes in the presence of competing cations has been studied in order to investigate techniques for decontamination of liquid phases. Vermiculite selectively removed high percentages of Cs even from low concentrations in the presence of competing cations. Also removed were up to 60?% of added Hg2+ at concentrations of 5?ppm from drinking water and about 84?% from seawater, and furthermore, Mn2+ was selectively removed from low-concentration (ca 10?ppm) industrial wastes even when the ratio of Mn2+ to competing cations was 1:94. The results suggest the potential use of vermiculite as decontaminating agent in well-designed fluidized bed columns. 相似文献

Three new bis azo reactive dyes of different metallic salts (Na, K, Li) were synthesized. The synthesis was obtained by diazotization of 4-amino-2:5 di methoxy phenylene-beta hydroxyl ethyl sulphone sulphate ester and coupling with 1-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene-3,6-disulfonic acid (H-acid) (moles ratio 2:1). The dyes were purified-concentrated by ultrafiltration technology, characterized and applied on cotton, wool and nylon 6,6 fabric by exhaustion (dyeing) and by ink-jet printing. Fastness properties of the dyeings were measured. Wash fastness was investigated according to international standard methods and was found to be very good to excellent in all cases, while light fastness values were medium to low. Ink-jet ink formulations were prepared using the ultra filtrated reactive blue dyes UF RB(a-c) and their properties pH, conductivity, surface tension and viscosity were monitored over a period of 90 days. The inks were used to print digitally cotton and nylon 6,6 samples and wash- and light fastness properties of the prints were measured. A 3-year field study was conducted in central Greece to determine the productivity of two stevia [(Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni] varieties (‘Morita’ and ‘Candy-stevia’) under normal and reduced irrigation (100% and 75% of the evapotranspiration) and fertilization [1:0.8:1.1 or 1:0.4:0.8 N:P:K ratio in the first year and only N fertilization (100% or 74% of the recommended rate) in the second and third years] inputs. Averaged across years, stevia cv. Morita achieved greater dry leaf yield (3.48 t ha?1) than the cv. Candy-stevia (2.85 t ha?1). Irrigation and fertilization inputs did not significantly affect stevia cv. Morita dry leaf and steviol glycosides (stevioside plus rebaudioside-A) yields; however, decreasing irrigation and fertilization caused slight reduction of cv. Candy-stevia yields. In cv. Morita leaves, the concentrations of stevioside and rebaudioside-A ranged from 5.97% to 7.78% and 3.73% to 4.79%, respectively, while the corresponding concentrations in cv. Candy-stevia leaves were 8.21–9.36% and 3.89–6.33%. Conclusively, both stevia varieties could achieve satisfactory dry leaf biomass and steviol glycosides yield, even when grown under reduced irrigation (at 75% of evapotranspiration) and reduced N fertilization (74% of the recommended rate). Thus, stevia could represent an alternative crop to tobacco in the Mediterranean conditions. 相似文献

The maturation of T cells in the thymus is dependent on the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. By disruption of the MHC class II Ab beta gene in embryonic stem cells, mice were generated that lack cell surface expression of class II molecules. These MHC class II-deficient mice were depleted of mature CD4+ T cells and were deficient in cell-mediated immune responses. These results provide genetic evidence that class II molecules are required for the maturation and function of mature CD4+ T cells. 相似文献

Two groups of pregnant ewes were experimentally infected oronasally in midpregnancy. A faecal and an abortion-source isolate of Chlamydophila abortus were used. They were derived from a healthy ewe from a flock with no history of abortion, and from an aborted foetus in a farm with enzootic abortion. As assessed by modified Ziehl-Neelsen (MZN) staining, egg culture, antigen ELISA, the Clearview test and immunohistochemistry, inoculation resulted in placental and/or foetal infection in all ewes. Histopathology revealed placentitis in two and four ewes inoculated with the enteric or abortion-source isolate, respectively, in addition, these samples were immunohistochemically positive for chlamydial antigen. All six ewes infected with the enteric isolate and five of seven ewes infected with the abortion-source isolate showed evidence for a serological response by an indirect ELISA or CFT. Neither chlamydiae nor lesions were detected in the placentae and lambs of the uninfected control ewes, which remained seronegative. Our results suggest that enteric C. abortus can be associated with placental and foetal lesions in sheep. 相似文献

Although Ni has been officially recognized as an essential micronutrient for all higher plants since 2004, research on assessing its sufficiency critical levels with different soil tests is missing in the literature. The objective of the study was to determine Ni critical levels in unpolluted cultivated soils utilizing four methods, employing three commonly used calibration techniques. Ten soils with different physical–chemical properties and low Ni content were treated with Ni at rates of 1, 2, 4, and 8 mg kg?1. After equilibration for one month, the soils were analyzed for extractable Ni by four methods, namely DTPA, AB‐DTPA, AAAc‐EDTA, and Mehlich‐3. Response to soil‐applied Ni was assessed by a greenhouse pot experiment, with the untreated and Ni‐treated soils in three replications, using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The aboveground biomass of ryegrass was harvested two months after sowing, dry weight of biomass was measured and relative biomass yield was calculated. Nickel's critical levels were determined employing the: (a) graphical technique of Brown and co‐workers, (b) Mitscherlich–Bray equation, and (c) Cate and Nelson graphical technique. According to the first technique, Ni critical levels were ≈ 2 mg kg?1 for the DTPA and AB‐DTPA methods, and 6.0 and 5.3 mg kg?1 for the AAAc‐EDTA and Mehlich‐3 methods, respectively. Similar levels were obtained by the Mitscherlich–Bray equation. However, the critical levels assessed by the Cate and Nelson technique were lower and ranged from 0.5 to 1.3 mg kg?1 for all four methods. Conclusively, Ni sufficiency critical levels for all four methods are expected to range at levels of a few mg Ni kg?1 of soil. As far as the three calibration techniques are concerned, a distinct boundary between Ni response and non‐response was accomplished by none. However, the fact that 60–74% of the soils were correctly separated into responsive and non‐responsive to added Ni by the graphical technique of Brown and co‐workers suggests that this is the most suitable technique. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Papaver rhoeas (L.) has evolved resistance to tribenuron in winter wheat fields in northern Greece owing to multiple Pro197 substitutions. Therefore, the cross‐resistance pattern to other sulfonylurea and non‐sulfonylurea ALS‐inhibiting herbicides of the tribenuron resistant (R) and susceptible (S) corn poppy populations was studied by using whole‐plant trials and in vitro ALS catalytic activity assays. RESULTS: The whole‐plant trials revealed that tribenuron R populations were also cross‐resistant to sulfonylureas mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron, chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron. The whole‐plant resistance factors (RFs) calculated for pyrithiobac, imazamox and florasulam ranged from 12.4 to > 88, from 1.5 to 28.3 and from 5.6 to 25.4, respectively, and were lower than the respective tribenuron RF values (137 to > 2400). The ALS activity assay showed higher resistance of the ALS enzyme to sulfonylurea herbicides (tribenuron > chlorsulfuron) and lower resistance to non‐sulfonylurea ALS‐inhibiting herbicides (pyrithiobac > florasulam ≈ imazamox). CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that Pro197 substitution by Ala, Ser, Arg or Thr in corn poppy results in a less sensitive ALS enzyme to sulfonylurea herbicides than to other ALS‐inhibiting herbicides. The continued use of sulfonylurea herbicides led to cross‐resistance to all ALS‐inhibiting herbicides, making their use impossible in corn poppy resistance management programmes. A 10-year-old male neutered Boxer presented with recurrence of a mast cell tumor at the right medial canthal area. Following excision including 2 cm margins, the medial one-half of the upper and lower eyelids and the medial canthus were reconstructed using an axial pattern flap based on the cutaneous branch of the superficial temporal artery. The bulbar conjunctiva of the nictitans was preserved and sutured to the medial flap edge, thus creating a conjunctival lining to the deep aspect of the flap, protecting corneal epithelium. This is a valuable surgical technique for closing a large skin defect and reconstructing the medial eyelids, thus preserving the globe. 相似文献
