This paper describes the causes of death of 54 maras (Dolichotis patagonum) in a captive colony in Mexico over a period of seven years. There were 35 adults, 11 juveniles, five neonates, two fetuses and one stillbirth--27 males, 21 females and six whose sex was not determined. Trauma was the cause of 25 deaths, and there were eight cases of fatal bacterial infection. Besnoitiosis was the only parasitic disease found frequently (13 cases), and was associated with fatal interstitial pneumonia in three juveniles. Right-sided hypertrophic cardiomyopathy attributed to high altitude was observed in 26 maras, and in three cases death was attributed to acute cardiac dysfunction. Two maras died of disseminated histoplasmosis and two of hyperthermia. Additional causes of death included one case each of uterine torsion, intestinal intussusception, aspiration pneumonia and hydranencephaly. Gastric erosions with luminal haemorrhage were found in 27 of the maras and splenic lymphoid depletion in 20, changes that were attributed to stress.  相似文献

One-hundred ninety-two crossbred steers (initial BW = 351 +/- 11 kg) were used to determine the effects of removing alfalfa hay (AH) from dry-rolled corn-based diets containing wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on animal performance and nutrient (N and OM) mass balance in open feedlot pens. Steers were stratified by weight and assigned randomly to 24 pens (2 x 3 factorial) and fed for 132 d from June to October 2002. Experimental diets contained either 0 or 35% WCGF and 0, 3.75, or 7.5% AH, and were formulated to be isonitrogenous. For efficiency of gain, an interaction occurred (P = 0.09) between AH and WCGF. Feed efficiencies of cattle fed 35% WCGF were improved 4.4% (P = 0.10) compared with efficiencies of cattle fed no WCGF at 0% AH; there was a marked improvement in ADG for cattle fed WCGF compared with no WCGF in diets with 0% AH. Within 35% WCGF diets, efficiency decreased as AH inclusion increased (P = 0.06). Efficiency was equal across AH levels when 0% WCGF was fed; however, ADG was decreased when AH was removed. Interactions between AH and WCGF were not detected for other performance or carcass criteria; therefore, main effects of AH and WCGF are discussed. Daily intake, ADG, and HCW increased linearly (P < 0.05) as dietary AH level increased. Feeding 35% WCGF also resulted in greater DMI (P < 0.01) and a tendency for greater ADG and HCW (P < or = 0.10) compared with steers fed no WCGF. Interactions between AH and WCGF were not observed for feedlot N mass balance. As level of AH increased across diets, N intake, N retention, and N excretion increased (P < 0.05). Steers fed 35% WCGF consumed and excreted more N (P < 0.01) than those fed no WCGF. More manure DM (P = 0.11), OM, and N (P < 0.01) were removed from pens housing steers fed 35% WCGF as well as greater OM and N recovery in finished compost. More N (kilogram/steer) was also lost to volatilization as a result of greater N excretion when WCGF was fed. Expressed as a percentage of N excretion, loss of N from pens housing steers fed 0 and 35% WCGF was not different, averaging nearly 80%. These data suggest that AH has less value when dry-rolled corn-based diets contain 35% WCGF and can be decreased from conventional levels. Furthermore, loss of N from open feedlot pens is high during the summer months, and feeding WCGF may not reduce N losses during these times of year.  相似文献

Thirty-six barrows were used in a series of 3 P-balance experiments in which growing and finishing pigs were fed highly digestible, semi-purified diets at or below the dietary available P requirement to estimate the effect of BW on endogenous P loss. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 were conducted with pigs averaging 27, 59, and 98 kg of BW, respectively. In each experiment, pigs were placed in metabolism crates and allotted by weight and litter to 3 dietary treatments. The basal diet consisted of sucrose, dextrose, cornstarch, and casein fortified with minerals (except P) and vitamins. Diets 1, 2, and 3 in Exp. 1 were the basal diet with 0, 0.078, or 0.157% added P, respectively, from monosodium phosphate. In Exp. 2 and 3, diets 1, 2, and 3 were the basal diet with 0, 0.067, and 0.134% added P, respectively, from monosodium phosphate. Within replicate, pigs were fed equal amounts of feed twice daily. Pigs were adjusted to treatments for 7 d before a 6-d, marker-to-marker collection of feces and urine. Phosphorus intakes for pigs fed the 3 diets ranged from 1.73 to 3.91 g/d in Exp. 1, from 2.18 to 5.32 g/d in Exp. 2, and from 1.96 to 6.26 g/d in Exp. 3. Fecal P excretion and P absorption increased linearly (P < 0.05) with increasing P intake. In the 3 experiments, urinary P excretion (g/d) was low for pigs fed diet 1 (0.010, 0.011, 0.019) and diet 2 (0.013, 0.058, 0.084) and was low for pigs fed diet 3 in Exp. 1 (0.037); however, urinary P was greater in pigs fed diet 3 in Exp. 2 and 3 (0.550 and 0.486, respectively). When P absorption (Y, g/d) was regressed on P intake (X, g/d) in Exp. 1, 2, and 3, the relationships were linear (P < 0.01): Y = -0.110 + 0.971X (R2 = 0.999), Y = -0.156 + 0.939X (R2 = 0.998), and Y = -0.226 + 0.8919X (R2 = 0.982), respectively. Thus, our estimates of endogenous P loss at zero P intake were 110, 156, and 226 mg/d for 27-, 59-, and 98-kg pigs, respectively. When these Y-intercepts were regressed on BW, the relationship was Y = 63.06 + 1.632X (R2 = 0.996), where Y = endogenous P loss in mg/d and X = BW in kg. Based on these data, we estimate the endogenous P loss of pigs fed highly digestible, semi-purified diets to increase by approximately 1.632 mg for each 1-kg increase in BW from 25 to 100 kg.  相似文献

A new technique for autogenous chest wall reconstruction using a latissimus dorsi muscle flap and a free graft of thoracolumbar fascia was utilised in a two‐year‐old Dobermann after resection of a high‐grade osteosarcoma from the left thoracic wall. En bloc excision of the chest wall mass, including six ribs, was performed. The resulting chest wall defect was too large to be reconstructed with only a pedicled muscle flap and was reconstructed with a latissimus dorsi muscle flap cranially and a free graft of thoracolumbar fascia caudally. The graft was harvested easily, and there was no donor site morbidity or postoperative complications. A free graft of thoracolumbar fascia can be considered as an option to supplement autogenous reconstruction of the chest wall.  相似文献
