Cultivars with submergence tolerant quantitative trait locus (SUB1) greatly enhance submergence tolerance at vegetative stage. Whether such cultivar is better off or not at reproductive stage submergence is not known. Due to uncertainties in rainfall pattern and delayed monsoon, flooding at later stages corresponding to reproductive stage is very much common now. Therefore, the main goal of the present investigation is to work out the effect of submergence at reproductive stage on yield and yield attributes in three rice cultivars namely Swarna, Swarna-Sub1, and Baliadhan (a traditional rice cultivar showed similar reaction to SUB1). The present study envisages that submergence at reproductive stage greatly decreased the grain yield even though there was no mortality of plants. Yield reduction was greater at flowering stage followed by booting and panicle initiation stage. Swarna-Sub1 performed significantly better compared to Swarna when submergence was given at panicle initiation stage. Swarna-Sub1 and Baliadhan both maintained greater quantities of carbohydrate and total dehydrogenase activity yet the yield reduction was greater in Swarna-Sub1 compared to Baliadhan due to greater chalf formation in the former. (1) To evaluate the cognitive ability of male and female Vanaraja birds, three hundred and sixty 1-d-old sexed chickens were reared under similar conditions in three treatment groups with 4 replicates in each group: 120 females in Treatment 1, 120 males in Treatment 2 and both males and females (60 + 60) as a mixed group in Treatment 3.
(2) To assess learning ability, the birds were trained in T- and Y-mazes and tested at 3-week intervals in 4 test schedules (21, 42, 63 and 84 d). The birds were put into tonic immobility (TI) in each test schedule.
(3) In each maze test, the latency to find the feed was regarded as a successful completion of the task. In the TI-test, the time taken to stabilise on a plane surface after swinging in the hanging cradle for 20–25 s was recorded.
(4) The results indicated that male birds appeared to be cognitively superior to females in terms of learning and cognitive evolution in all the mazes, but by d 84, the females performed as well as the males. With increasing age, spatial memory gathering and processing improved. In the TI-test, the effect of sex or grouping system had no significant effect on the performance of birds at the various ages. 相似文献
Melatonin, the major secretory product of the pineal gland, scavenges a variety of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in vivo and in vitro, indicating that melatonin is a potent function as an antioxidant. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of melatonin in the presence or absence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on sperm characteristics (motility, viability, survival rate, membrane integrity, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and mitochondria activity) and also to examine the developmental rates to the blastocysts stage of porcine oocytes fertilized in vitro with semen treated with or without melatonin (100 nm ) in the presence or absence of H2O2 (250 μm ). The sperm were treated with melatonin in the presence or absence of H2O2 for 3, 6, 9 and 12 h at 37°C and then analysed for the sperm characteristics. The porcine embryos were produced by in vitro maturation and in vitro fertilization (IVM/IVF) using semen treated with or without melatonin (100 nm ) in the presence or absence of H2O2 (250 μm ) for 6 h. The semen characteristics, including motility, viability, survival rate, membrane integrity and mitochondria activity, were higher in the groups that were treated with melatonin in comparison to other groups, irrespective of incubation periods. Malondialdehyde levels in control, melatonin and melatonin + H2O2 groups were lower than H2O2 only group. A positive correlation was shown among motility, viability, survival rate and membrane integrity, but a negative correlation was observed between LPO and the other evaluation methods. The developmental rates to blastocysts of IVM/IVF porcine oocytes fertilized by semen treated with melatonin were significantly increased compared with any other groups, with the cell number of blastocysts shown to have a similar trend to the developmental rates. These results demonstrate that melatonin can improve the semen characteristics during in vitro storage and support the developmental ability of IVM/IVF embryos in pigs. 相似文献
Deeper rooting 1(Dro1) and Deeper rooting 2(Dro2) are the QTLs that contribute considerably to root growth angle assisting in deeper rooting of rice plant. In the present study, a set of 348 genotypes were shortlisted from rice germplasm based on root angle study. Screening results of the germplasm lines under drought stress identified 25 drought tolerant donor lines based on leaf rolling, leaf drying, spikelet fertility and single plant yield. A panel containing 101 genotypes was constituted based on screening results and genotyped using Dro1 and Dro2 markers. Structure software categorized the genotypes into four sub-populations with different fixation index values for root growth angle. The clustering analysis and principal coordinate analysis could differentiate the genotypes with or without deeper rooting trait. The dendrogram constructed based on the molecular screening for deep rooting QTLs showed clear distinction between the rainfed upland cultivars and irrigated genotypes. Eleven genotypes, namely Dular, Tepiboro, Surjamukhi, Bamawpyan, N22, Dinorado, Karni, Kusuma, Bowdel, Lalsankari and Laxmikajal, possessed both the QTLs, whereas 67 genotypes possessed only Dro1. The average angle of Dro positive genotypes ranged from 82.7° to 89.7°. These genotypes possessing the deeper rooting QTLs can be taken as donor lines to be used in marker-assisted breeding programs. 相似文献
1. An investigation was carried out into the effects of dietary α-tocopherol (α-T) concentration and source of supplemental oil on performance, activity of anti-oxidative enzymes and some immune responses in broilers from day-old to 41 d of age. 2. Three dietary concentrations of α-T (10, 50 and 100 mg/kg) with three sources of supplemental oil (sunflower - SFO, palm - PMO and safflower - SAO) were provided using a 3 × 3 experimental design. 3. Body weight gain and food conversion efficiency were not affected by either interaction or concentrations of α-T and sources of oil in diet. 4. Concentrations of total protein, globulin, triglycerides and cholesterol in sera increased significantly with dietary α-T concentration irrespective of the source of oil. Significantly higher concentration of serum albumin was evident in broilers fed on the SFO-based diet and the concentration of globulin was higher in groups fed on those diets containing PMO and SAO. 5. The lipid peroxidation (LP), measured as MDA release, decreased with the concentration of α-T in a dose-related manner with SFO- and SAO-based diets, although not with the PMO-based diet. With different oil sources, LP was significantly lower with the PMO-based diet compared to the others. Activities of glutathione peroxidase and RBC catalase increased and heterophil: lymphocyte ratio was reduced with concentration of α-T for each source of oil tested. 6. Assays for humoral and cell-mediated immune responses indicated no effect of the source of dietary supplemental oil or interaction, although an increasing concentration of dietary α-T improved cell-mediated immune responses. 7. It is concluded that sunflower oil, palm oil and safflower oil can be used as sources of oil for broiler diets without having any effect on performance, immune responses or the activity of anti-oxidizing enzymes. Higher concentrations of dietary α-tocopherol (50 or 100 mg/kg) reduced lipid peroxidation activity and enhanced activities of anti-oxidative enzymes, they also improved the cell-mediated immune responses in commercial broilers. 相似文献
The genetics of resistance to Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii R. Alef, the wild progenitor of cultivated cucumber was assessed by challenge inoculation and by natural infection of CMV.
Among the 31 genotypes of C. sativus var. hardwickii collected from 21 locations in India the lowest mean percent disease intensity (PDI) was recorded in IC-277048 (6.33%) while
the highest PDI was observed in IC-331631 (75.33%). All the four cultivated varieties (DC-1, DC-2, CHC-1 and CHC-2) showed
very high PDI and susceptible disease reaction. Based on mean PDI, 8 genotypes were categorized as resistant, 13 as moderately
resistant, 9 as moderately susceptible and one as susceptible. A chi-square test of frequency distribution based on mean PDI
in F2 progenies of six resistant × susceptible crosses revealed monogenic recessive Mendelian ratio 1(R):3(S) to be the best fit.
This monogenic recessive model was further confirmed by 1(R):1(S) ratio as the best fit for back cross with resistant parent
and no fit for either 3:1 or 1:1 in the back cross with the susceptible parent. The results revealed that CMV resistance in
C. sativus var. hardwickii was controlled by a single recessive gene. Considering the cross compatibility between C. sativus var. hardwickii and cultivated cucumber, the resistance trait can be easily transferred to cultivated species through simple backcross breeding. 相似文献
The recovery of population, biomass and reproduction of a dominant crop field earthworm (Drawida willsi, Michaelsen) was assessed following the application of two recommended agricultural doses of malathion (2.2 mg kg–1– single dose and 4.4 mg kg–1– double dose) in a rice field agroecosystem for a period of 105 days. The average worm population and biomass showed 12%
and 21% decline, respectively, in plots treated with single and double doses of malathion, compared with control. The peak
of worm population was observed after 60 days in control (plot I) and this peak value was shifted by 15 days (i.e. observed
after 75 days) in malathion-treated plots (plots II and III) indicating delay in growth and maturation of the worms following
the application of malathion. Inhibition in the total number of cocoons produced, and thus in the rate of reproduction, was
also observed in malathion-treated plots. The peak rate of reproduction (1.71 cocoons adult–1) was observed after 60 days in control plots and after 75 days (1.57 and 1.40 cocoons adult–1) in single and double dose malathion-treated plots, respectively. One-way analysis of variance showed significant differences
in the population size and biomass of D. willsi up to 75 days, in rate of reproduction up to 90 days, and no difference thereafter. This indicates that, under field conditions,
D. willsi worms took about 75–90 days after application of malathion to resume normal population, biomass and reproduction, and hence
we suggest that a second application of malathion in single and double agricultural doses should be avoided before this time.

Molecular detection of phytopathogens is increasingly being applied to identify regulated organisms at the border in many parts of the world. However, even with molecular tests, complete phenotyping and identification of a strain is often time consuming and sometimes inconclusive. In this study, a leaf-based pathogenicity test was used to separate pseudomonads into two groups, Group A containing pathogens, and Group B containing saprotrophs. Comparative genomics of 56 pseudomonad genomes from different plant hosts (including 29 strains from kiwifruit) agreed with kiwifruit pathogenicity test results, placing pathogens into Group A and saprotrophs into Group B. Sixteen loci were found unique to Group A. A PCR assay was developed for amplification of one of these loci, the trehalose phosphatase gene. The generation of this 655 bp amplicon was associated with production of water-soaked lesions on inoculated kiwifruit leaves by pseudomonads in Group A. This test was validated for further strains from all seven pathogenic Pseudomonas phylogroups, non-pathogenic pseudomonads, and other bacterial genera. The sensitivity of the PCR was comparable to the limit of recovery of pseudomonads by culturing. This simple PCR assay could be used as part of a testing pipeline at the border and for general surveillance for screening plants with and without symptoms, offering the potential to detect uncharacterized pseudomonads that may pose a biosecurity risk. The method was shown to be able to rapidly identify pathogens cultured from plant material with symptoms, or, more importantly, to detect pathogens directly from plant tissue. 相似文献
