Shifts in oxic and anoxic conditions in soil are most frequently caused by water table fluctuations, heavy rain, snowmelt or flooding, with potentially significant impacts on microbial processes and the ability of soils to convert mineral nitrogen to nitrogen gases efficiently. The impact of oxic/anoxic cycles on nitrogen transformation rates was therefore explored in the upper layer (0-30 cm) of partially degraded peat soil. We hypothesized that high denitrification potential would be conserved due to the high organic matter content of this soil. Mineral nitrogen was applied to approximately 1-cm deep layers of homogenized soil in microcosms, with no external source of readily degradable carbon. Microcosms were subjected to three cycles, each consisting of an oxic phase of 8-11 days and an anoxic phase of 21-28 days. Approximately 2% of the ammonium load was lost through ammonia volatilization during oxic phases and the remainder was nitrified. The accumulated nitrate decreased soil pH from 8.0 to 6.8 before its transformation through denitrification. Nitrification and denitrification rates during the three oxic/anoxic cycles (approximately three months) were 2.9-3.2 kg N ha−1 d−1 and 1.0-2.3 kg N ha−1 d−1, respectively. Extrapolation of these values to 30-cm deep soil layers gave rates that were sufficient for complete transformation of at least 1700 kg N ha−1 of ammonium to nitrogen gases, which is ten-fold greater than the annual nitrogen application of 170 kg N ha−1 permitted by the European directive. Denitrification rates decreased linearly during the three cycles (from 36 ± 2 to 16 ± 1 μg N g−1 d−1 dry soil), projecting cessation of denitrification activity and CO2 production during the fifth cycle. Storage of peat soil at 4 °C most probably allowed slow degradation of organic matter that was completely oxidized to CO2 after the soil was exposed to higher temperature (28 °C). Storage of soil for one year did not affect nitrification rate, but reduced denitrification rate, unless soil was amended with a readily degradable carbon source. The data suggest that, despite the high carbon content of this soil, it cannot sustain transformations of high N loads to nitrogen gases for prolonged periods without amendment with readily available carbon.  相似文献

Keeping in mind to reduce chilling injury and retain quality; pomegranate (Punica granatum L., cv. Mridula) fruits were treated with putrescine, carnauba wax and putrescine + carnauba wax prior to cold storage at 2 °C. Before analyzing physical, physiological and biochemical parameters fruits were subjected to post cold storage exposure at 20 °C for 3 days. Untreated fruits developed rapidly chilling injury, with main symptoms being brown discolouration of the skin, surface pitting, weight and firmness loss during storage. All these undesirable changes were significantly delayed by putrescine + carnauba wax application. Respiration and ethylene evolution rate were also brought down by combined application of putrescine and carnauba wax treatment. The superiority of combine treatment over other applications seems arises due to additive benefit of antisenescence and barrier properties of putrescine and carnauba wax, respectively.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the potential and nature of root‐mediated allelopathic interference of Chenopodium murale on wheat. Early growth of wheat reduced significantly in agar medium where C. murale seedlings were previously growing as well as in rhizosphere soil of C. murale. The reduction in wheat growth was due to the presence of inhibitory metabolites released by roots of C. murale in the growth media. Even the soil incorporation of root residues also reduced the wheat growth in terms of seedling length and seedling dry weight. Only a partial amelioration in growth inhibition occurred upon charcoal supplementation or nitrogen fertilization in these amended soils. Root residues did not reduce the available nutrients in the soil, which was rather nutrient rich. These results indicated the definite role of allelopathy of C. murale roots in retarding wheat growth. Root amended soils contained significantly higher amount of phytotoxic phenolics as the putative allelochemicals, which were ferulic acid, vanillic acid, p‐coumaric acid and benzoic acid. The study concluded that C. murale roots and their exudates exerted allelopathic effects on wheat by releasing water‐soluble phenolic acids as putative allelochemicals in soil.  相似文献

Objective To measure the plasma cortisol response in calves dehorned by four different methods (scoop, guillotine shears, saw, embryotomy wire) for 9 h after dehorning.
Design A physiological study with controls.
Procedure Horn amputation was carried out on calves restrained manually in a race.
Results The four methods of dehorning provoked similarly increased cortisol responses which lasted for 6 h. During the first hour after dehorning the plasma cortisol concentrations were similar to those following ACTH injection. The overall cortisol response to control handling was about 30% of the responses to dehorning.
Conclusions The similarity of the cortisol responses produced by the four methods of dehorning suggests that the distress experienced by calves following dehorning by amputation is similar regardless of method used.  相似文献

The Vertisols of the Purna Valley, which cover the districts of Amravati, Akola and Buldhana in the state of Maharashtra, India, lack any perceptible evidence of salt efflorescence on the soil surface which would indicate the presence of salt, but the drainage conditions are poor. The limited data available indicate that the adverse physical condition of the soils is due to their poor hydraulic conductivity (HC), which is impaired by sodium in the exchange complex. However, the factors and processes that are inherently related to the development of sodicity in these shrink-swell soils are not yet understood. In order to establish the cause-effect relationship, eight Vertisol pedons from methodically selected sites were studied morphometrically in the field, and for their sodicity-related physical and chemical properties in the laboratory. The soils are deep, calcareous, clayey and very dark greyish brown to dark brown in colour. Cracks extend up to the slickenside zones in soils of Pedons 1–3 in the northeastern area of the valley, while they cut through the slickenside zones in soils of Pedons 4–8 in the southwest. The slickenside faces were larger in the soils of the southwest than in those of the northeast. All these soils meet the specifications of the Vertisols order of soil taxonomy. Saturation extracts of the soils had very low electrical conductivity (ECe ⩽ 2 ds m−1). They ranged from moderately alkaline in the northeast, Pedons 1–3, to strongly alkaline in the southwest, pedons 4–8. In soils from the northeast the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) was less than 5 throughout the depth of the pedons, whereas in other soils it was up to 6 in the surface horizons and between 7 and 26 in the subsoil horizons; four of these soils qualified as sodic according to the criteria of the United States Salinity Laboratory. The inherently low hydraulic conductivity was due to the dispersion of clay particles caused by a high percentage of exchangeable magnesium (EMP) in the highly smectitic soils, and also to a slight increase in ESP (⩾5). The results of this study suggest that ESP 5 should be used as the lower limit for sodic subgroups of Vertisols, rather than ESP 15 as given in Keys to Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 1994). This is because there are severe limitations to the use of such soils owing to the development of adverse physical conditions even at such a low ESP. The authors emphasize the need to keep this fact in mind during future land resource management programmes on the soils of this valley as well as on similar soils occurring elsewhere. The development of sodicity in the soils of the southwestern part of the valley has been attributed to the semi-arid climatic conditions that have induced the pedogenetic process of depletion of calcium ions from the soil solution in the form of calcium carbonate, thereby resulting in an increase of both the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and the ESP with pedon depth. This chemical degradation, which affects the sodicity of Vertisols, appears to be a basic process that needs to be recognised in the future along with those already described as natural processes of soil degradation.  相似文献

Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Myxozoa: Malacosporea) is the causative agent of proliferative kidney disease (PKD), which affects both wild and farmed salmonid fish. The objective of this study was to outline differences in susceptibility to PKD in different salmonid species, hybrids and breeding lineages. Susceptibility to T. bryosalmonae infection was established based on cumulative mortality, pathological findings and detection of T. bryosalmonae in the kidney using immunohistochemistry and molecular methods. Determination of pure and hybrid individuals of different species in the genus Salvelinus, and dissimilarity of rainbow trout lineages, was performed using traditional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and microsatellite analyses. Rainbow trout displayed higher disease severity compared with brook trout and Alsatian charr. Moreover, the results indicated differences in infection susceptibility, not only among different salmonid species but also among different lineages of charr and rainbow trout. Our study indicated that some salmonid species and even different lineages of the same species are more suitable for farming under PKD pressure.  相似文献

Teleost fish have developed their own specific adaptive mechanism, both behavioral and physiological, to maintain homeostasis in response to unfavorable temperatures. Therefore, this study was aimed at assessing the critical thermal maxima (CTMax), critical thermal minima (CTMin), and oxygen consumption rate of Anabas testudineus (17.03 ± 1.2 g) after acclimating to three preset temperatures (25, 30, and 35°C) for 30 days. The CTMax and CTMin were 40.15, 41.40, 41.88°C and 12.43, 13.06, 13.94°C, respectively, and were significantly different (P < 0.05). The thermal tolerance polygon for the specified temperatures was 278.30°C2. The oxygen consumption rate (117.03, 125.70, 198.48 mg O2 kg−1 h−1, respectively) increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing acclimation temperatures. The overall results indicate that the thermal tolerance and oxygen consumption of A. testudineus are dependent on acclimation.  相似文献

A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to study the immuno-protective effect of microbial levan on Labeo rohita juveniles challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Six purified diets were prepared with different levels of microbial levan: control (no levan), T1 (Basal + 0.25%), T2 (Basal + 0.50%), T3 (Basal + 0.75%), T4 (Basal + 1%) and T5 (Basal + 1.25%), fed to six groups of fish in triplicate. Among the treatment groups the haemoglobin content and total leucocyte count were increased with a dietary supplementation of levan at 1% or more. An increasing trend for total erythrocyte count was observed with increasing level of dietary levan. Lower levan-supplemented groups showed a higher albumin/globulin ratio. As the levan supplementation was increased, there was a gradual increase in serum lysozyme activity and respiratory burst activity [nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) assay] reduction values. The highest lysozyme activity and NBT were observed in the T5 group although this was similar to the T4 group ( P  > 0.05). No significant histo-architectural changes were associated with dietary levan levels. After challenge with A. hydrophila , moderately degenerated hepatocytes, oedema and leucocytic infiltration in parenchymatous tissues, and extensive haemorrhage and haemosiderosis in the kidney were observed in the control group. However, the T5 group supplemented with 1.25% levan showed infiltrating leucocytes in the liver while the kidney showed only moderate degeneration of renal tubules. The relative survival per cent of juveniles after challenge with A. hydrophila was the highest in the T5 group followed by T4. This suggests that microbial levan at 1.25% can be used as dietary immunostimulant for L. rohita juveniles.  相似文献
