Digests of diaphragms from 33 482 hogs slaughtered in the mid-atlantic states were examined for the presence of Trichinella spiralis larvae. The samples were obtained from 7 slaughterhouses, ranging in slaughter capacity from less than 50 per day to more than 4000 per day. The sources of the hogs varied from “backyard” operations, raising hogs for home use, to commercial farms. The means by which hogs were brought to the slaughterhouse also differed; the larger slaughterhouses often purchased directly from the producer while the smaller slaughterhouses (1000 hogs per day or less) usually purchased through dealers or brokers. Infected hogs were detected more frequently than was expected from previously-published prevalence studies; overall, 0.58% of samples examined contained T. spiralis larvae. All of the infected hogs were marketed through the smaller slaughterhouses (less than 1000 per day) and nearly all were marketed through brokers. The mean number of larvae per gram of diaphragm, determined by slaugterhouses type, ranged from 0.5 to 74.6; most infections were light although 5 had counts of 1000–2480.Most of the positive samples were obtained from one slaughterhouse, the data from which exhibited marked differences in the frequency of infection by day of the week; 128 positive samples of the total of 190 found were obtained on Fridays, although only 10% of all samples were obtained on that day. Analysis of the geographic origin of shipments containing infected hogs revealed that most originated in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, although the hogs shipped from the latter state might originated in New England or Maryland. Abstract.— Fish possess a growth hormone similar to mammalian growth hormone, and the presence of a growth hormone-releasing hormone-like material in the brain has been demonstrated in several teleost species. We investigated the effect of a mammalian growth hormone-releasing hormone on serum estradiol-17β and testosterone concentrations in tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus and a hybrid O. niloticus × O aureus because growth hormone has been implicated in the regulation of gonadal functions in teleosts. Three hours after injecting the releasing hormone, male and female serum testosterone concentrations significantly increased compared to controls, while serum estradiol-17β concentrations increased significantly only in females. These increases were commensurate with respective serum steroid concentrations in fish injected with gonadotropin releasing-hormone. Studies utilizing hypophysectomized fish resulted in non-detectable levels of serum sex steroids in fish treated with the growth hormone-releasing hormone; however, significant increases occurred in fish treated with human chorionic gonadotropin. Similarly, gonadal tissue incubated with growth hormone releasing hormone had non-detectable levels of sex steroids in the media, whereas gonads incubated with human chorionic gonadotropin had significant increases in sex steroid concentrations. These studies suggest that growth hormone-releasing hormone acts at the level of the pituitary. Although mammalian growth hormones have been shown to increase serum gonadotropic hormone concentrations, this study provides evidence that a mammalian growth hormone-releasing hormone has the ability to indirectly increase sex steroid levels in fish. 相似文献

Cultivated peanut, the second most economically important legume crop throughout the United States and the third most important
oilseed in the world, is consistently threatened by various diseases and pests. Sclerotinia minor Jagger (S. minor), the causal agent of Sclerotinia blight, is a major threat to peanut production in the Southwestern U.S., Virginia, and
North Carolina and can reduce yield by up to 50% in severely infested fields. Although host plant resistance would provide
the most effective solution to managing Sclerotinia blight, limited sources of resistance to the disease are available for
use in breeding programs. Peanut germplasm collections are available for exploration and identification of new sources of
resistance, but traditionally the process is lengthy, requiring years of field testing before those potential sources can
be identified. Molecular markers associated with phenotypic traits can speed up the screening of germplasm accessions, but
until recently none were available for Sclerotinia blight resistance in peanut. This study objective of this study was to
characterize the US peanut mini-core collection with regards to a recently discovered molecular marker associated with Sclerotinia
blight resistance. Ninety-six accessions from the collection were available and genotyped using the SSR marker and 39 total
accessions from spanish, valencia, runner market types were identified as new potential sources of resistance and targeted

Forestland tenure institutions and patterns are in a period of rapid change in the USA. Historically dominant forestland tenures
are disappearing, and new tenures are emerging. Traditional, vertically integrated forest products firms have shed their forestland
holdings which have been picked up by Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMOs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts
(REITs). Increasing numbers of private individuals and families are purchasing small rural tracts and some communities are
developing innovative means to gain control over nearby forestlands in order to protect these lands from commercial real estate
development. Within this context of rapid ownership change, small-scale forest owners including families and communities find
themselves at a competitive disadvantage, relative to large corporate owners, in wood commodity markets. This paper considers
how small-scale forest tenures, relative to large corporate tenures, may be advantageous to society with regard to selected
ecological, social, and economic factors. While the paper primarily draws upon illustrations from the US Pacific Northwest,

Developing more stress‐tolerant crops will require greater knowledge of the physiological basis of stress tolerance. Here, we explore how biomass declines in response to salinity relate to leaf traits across 20 genotypes of cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Plant growth, leaf physiological traits and leaf elemental composition were assessed after 21 days of salinity treatments (0, 50, 100, 150 or 200 mM NaCl) in a greenhouse study. There was a trade‐off in performance such that vigorous genotypes, those with higher biomass at 0 mM NaCl, had both a larger absolute decrease and proportional decrease in biomass due to increased salinity. More vigorous genotypes at control were less tolerant to salinity. Contrary to expectation, genotypes with a low increase in leaf Na and decrease in K:Na were not better at maintaining biomass with increasing salinity. Rather, genotypes with a greater reduction in leaf S and K content were better at maintaining biomass at increased salinity. While we found an overall trade‐off between sunflower vigour and salt tolerance, some genotypes were more tolerant than expected. Further analysis of the traits and mechanisms underlying this trade‐off may allow us to breed these into high‐vigour genotypes in order to increase their salt tolerance. 相似文献

A methodology and applications of ontology-based simulation are presented. An environment for building simulations based on the Lyra ontology management system is described which includes web-based visual design tools for constructing models and automatically generating simulation code. The ontology is used for representing all equations and all symbols appearing in these equations that are needed to describe a model. The example applications presented are models of soil, water, and nutrient management in citrus and sugarcane. Results thus far show that the ontology-based approach has advantages for representing the model structure, equations, and symbols, that complex models can be described in this format, and that efficient simulation code can be generated automatically from the ontology definition of the model. Potential applications, not yet fully explored, include ability to automatically connect models and data sources, using the ontology to organize model bases containing many models and model components, and using ontology reasoners to search for models, automatically discover model similarities and differences, and generate model instances from general principles. 相似文献

Crop-water production functions (CWPFs) are a useful tool for irrigation planning, but derivation of CWPFs by field experimentation is expensive, and traditional analytical techniques are not well suited to derivation of CWPFs. Physiologically based crop models provide a useful tool for simulation of agricultural experiments, but they have not been extensively applied to the task of CWPF determination. A new algorithm type based upon differential crop yield response to irrigation (“yield–irrigation gradients” [YIG]) is presented that uses these crop models to determine planning-level irrigation schedules and CWPFs. Three specific algorithms are developed within this type, varying in complexity, performance, and computational costs. Performance of the YIG methods is compared against a standard reference evapotranspiration method. In particular, the randomized iterative YIG (RIYIG) algorithm provides near-optimal results but at the highest computational costs of all the methods specified. All of the techniques presented have general applicability and are not limited to any one crop or location. 相似文献
