Objective —To test a crimp clamp system designed to secure monofilament nylon leader (MNL) material commonly used as lateral fabellotibial sutures (LFS) in extra-articular stabilization of the canine stifle joint.
Study Design — In vitro biomechanical tests of MNL loops secured with either the crimp clamp system or knots were performed. Suture loops (n = 94) were created from 27.3 kg tensile strength MNL and fastened with knots or crimp clamps. Tests were conducted on steam-sterilized, ethylene-oxide-sterilized, and nonsterilized MNL sutures. Loops were evaluated in single load tests and cycled tests. Values for load to failure, initial loop tension, loop elongation, mode of failure, and point of failure were determined.
Results —Crimp-clamped loops were superior to knotted loops in all parameters tested in both cycled and noncycled tests. Loop failure generally occurred by breaking within 3 mm of the fixation in both clamped and knotted tests. Loop elongation after cycling was greater in the knotted loops compared with clamped loops ( P < .001). Load to failure was greater in clamped tests than in knotted tests (P < .001), regardless of sterilization technique used. Significantly higher initial loop tension could be achieved with the clamp system compared with knot fixation ( P < .001).
Conclusions —The crimp clamp system provides superior in vitro loop fixation characteristics compared with knot fixation in 27.3 kg test MNL.
Clinical Relevance —Based on the results of biomechanical testing and the known biocompatibility of the system's implant components, clinical trials using the crimp clamp system are warranted.  相似文献

A model simulating acute-compressive spinal cord trauma at the second lumbar spinal cord segment (100 g, 300 seconds) was used to evaluate the efficacy of a vehicle control, methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS), and a 21-aminosteroid compound (U74389G). Dogs were allocated into one of five treatment groups (A to E) using ultrasonographic determination of spinal cord diameters to ensure even distribution of spinal cord diameters among the treatment groups. Initial dosages of the vehicle control (A), methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg of body weight) (B), or U74389G (30 mg/kg, 3 mg/kg, or 10 mg/kg of body weight) (C, D, or E, respectively) were administered intravenously 30 minutes after trauma. Dosages were reduced by one-half for 2 and 6 hour treatments. Then every 4 hours for 42 hours, dosages were reduced one-third and one-sixth from the original dose of methylprednisolone and U74389G, respectively. Neurological examinations were performed daily for 21 days. Histopathological examination of the traumatized spinal cord showed malacic and degenerative lesions. Although significant differences in some portions of the neurological and histopathologic examinations were observed, clinical efficacy for MPSS and U74389G could not be established in this model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Washington DC is the center of the nation's ninth largest metropolitan area (PMSA), home to 4.4 million people and 2.9 million employees in a web of 25 separate, autonomous municipalities spanning three states and the District of Columbia. As such, the region is a good place to analyze the pattern of suburbanization of producer service employment over the past 25 years. In addition to overall suburbanization, the metropolitan area has seen changes in the nature and role of its dominant economic force, the federal government. Direct federal employment has stagnated while federal contracts to private companies have soared. Producer service employment seemed to increase in importance in jurisdictions away from the region's core, simultaneous with increases in total employment, following increases in federal contracting, and independent of increases in federal employment. These trends have affected the growth of producer service employment across the metropolitan area, encouraging their suburbanization. By subjecting our initial models to sub-sector data and analysis of temporal trends in the coefficients, we uncover the uniqueness of legal services and additional evidence of suburbanization over time.  相似文献

A survey was made of soil factors likely to be responsible forchecked growth of Sitka spruce on soils derived from basaltin western coastal areas of Scotland. Despite the high organicP contents of these soils, availability of P appears to be themain factor limiting growth; growth indices were significantlycorrelated with foliar P concentrations and inorganic P levelsof the soil. The low availability of soil P appears to be associatedwith high levels of oxalate-extractable Al (amorphous) in thesoils, a strong correlation existing between the latter andthe P sorption index of Bache and Williams. CaCl2-extractableAl (‘available’) values were also high and althoughthey exhibited no significant correlation with growth therewas a negative correlation between growth and foliar Al concentrations. High mycorrhizal counts were associated with tree roots on siteswith better growth while beaded roots were mainly associatedwith poor growth. There is a suggestion that high CaCl2-extractableAl in these soils may affect mycorrhizal development, as a strongcorrelation was found between the occurrence of beaded rootsand foliar Al concentration. Factor analysis confirmed that low availability of P in thesesoils may be ameliorated by mycorrhizal development and thata negative association exists between growth, the occurrenceof beaded roots and foliar Al concentration.  相似文献
