Alzheimer type II astrocytes in the brains of pigs with salt poisoning (water deprivation/intoxication)

The finding of Alzheimer type II astrocytes, in addition to the pathognomonic combination of laminar cerebrocortical necrosis and eosinophil infiltration, in the brains of pigs is reported for the first time in cases of indirect salt poisoning following water deprivation.     

Fumigation as a Means of Eradicating Colorado Beetle in Imports of Potatoes, Grain and Timber

Colorado beetle is not indigenous to the United Kingdom, but is often found in imported produce and is a serious pest of potato crops. The efficacy at 10°C of five fumigants was tested against diapausing beetles in the laboratory. Phosphine was the most effective giving 100 % kill in tests with a concentration time product of 6.7 g.h/m³; 100 % kill was also achieved in tests with: methyl bromide at 166 g.h/m³; carbon tetrachloride at 4000 g.h/m3; ethylene dichloride at 6240 g.h/m³; and 1,1,1-trichloroethane at 11600 g.h/m³. A set of practical dosage schedules is given.     

The use of the glutaraldehyde coagulation test for detection of hypogammaglobulinaemia in neonatal foals

The effectiveness of the glutaraldehyde coagulation test (GCT) in detecting failure to acquire colostral immunoglobulin in neonatal foals was investigated. This was achieved by comparing and correlating results from the GCT with those obtained by single radial immunodiffusion (SRID) of equine IgG. The GCT was found to be a practical, inexpensive, semiquantitative test with a high specificity and sensitivity at critical IgG levels.     

TACTOID SIZE AND ION EXCLUSION IN FLOCCULATED CLAYS

The chloride-exclusion volume of calcium-saturated specimens of two bentonites and seven soils were determined over a range of electrolyte concentrations. These systems are believed to approximate the flocculated condition of most Manitoba soils. The montmorillonite was found to be arranged in tactoids or crystallites having an approximate 19Å basal spacing. The assumption of complete chloride exclusion from the interlayer volume over most of the concentration range combined with exclusion according to Gouy theory by the external surfaces provided a reasonable explanation of the experimental data. The number of montmorillonite layers comprising a tactoid, as calculated from the negative absorption determinations, was found to be strongly dependent upon the particle size of the montmorillonite.     

The cytopathological features of thymoma in a dog

A dog presenting with weight loss and displacement of the heart to the right was diagnosed as having a thymoma by transthoracic fine-needle aspiration biopsy. The cytological findings are described and correlated with the histological findings. Cytologically the lesion contained numerous large clusters of neoplastic epithelial cells with scant basophilic cytoplasm, and scattered, well-differentiated lymphocytes. Histologically the thymoma was composed of predominantly spindle-shaped epithelial cells arranged in broad sheets or forming sworling and storiform patterns. Some lobules contained lymphoid cells.
