The principal aim of this research was to determine the influence of wildfires on soil organic matter (SOM) content and composition in soils located on the northern slope of the Cantabrian Cordillera, an Atlantic mountainous region in the North West of Spain, where wildfires are frequent. Samples from soils with similar aspect, slope, elevation and vegetation characteristics, but with different wildfires histories were collected. Total organic carbon and total nitrogen contents were determined as well as the C/N ratio. Furthermore, a qualitative characterization of the soil organic carbon (SOC) was carried out by 13C variable amplitude cross polarization magic angle spinning (VACP/MAS) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our results show that, on the one hand, all the sampled soils can be considered important pools of carbon in this Atlantic mountainous region, especially in the heath areas. On the other hand, the fire-affected soils present higher SOM contents than their unburnt counterparts. This could be attributed to an important reaccumulation of fresh vegetal material, which is probably a consequence of the decrease of SOM decomposition rates after fire. Moreover, charred organic compounds are not found in all the burnt soils, which could be due to the long time since the last fires events took place, to different fire severities, or to different post-fire erosion processes in the studied soils.  相似文献

Two introduced wild species Helianthus annuus L. and H. petiolaris Nutt. have become widespread in central Argentina and overlap the sunflower crop region. Intermediate off-type plants between the wild and cultivated species are often found, which is of concern because of the recent release of imidazolinone resistant varieties and the likely use of genetically modified sunflower cultivars. The progeny of 33 off-type plants obtained from 14 representative sites of the diffusion area were studied to confirm hybrid origin. Germination, survival, morphological traits and days to flowering confirmed hybridization between crop and both wild species, when compared to eight accessions of typical wild plants. Some progenies were presumably crop–wild H. annuus hybrids, some originated from the cross of cultivated plants and H. petiolaris, and two were the advanced generation of a cultivated hybrid. Hence, morphological traits are a good clue for the identification of spontaneous hybrid plants at field. The results indicate that crop–wild hybridization and introgression occur at various places in central Argentina. This fact may represent a way to herbicide resistance escape and future transgene escape if GM sunflower cultivars are released for commercial use.  相似文献

This study was performed to test suitable washing protocols for removing potentially toxic elements (PTE) deposited on leaves of plants from metal mine tailings. Two experiments were performed; with five and four treatments, respectively. In both cases, a non-washed treatment was included too. All the washing protocols significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced PTE concentrations in leaves of Dalea bicolor and Aliona choisyi. A. choisyi leaves had higher PTE concentrations than those of D. bicolor. From the first experiment, the concentration of lead (Pb, mg/kg) in unwashed leaves of A. choisyi was 715; while in the washed leaves treatments, it was in the range of 142–308. For cadmium (Cd) it was 23 vs the range of 7–18, for copper (Cu) it was 210 vs the range of 35–115 and for zinc (Zn) it was 3398 vs the range of 777–380, respectively. The single use of water does not remove all PTE deposited in leaves and conduces to overestimation of PTE leaf concentrations. Washing effectiveness varied according to PTE, plant species and treatments, but not the time of washing. Cd was the least removed from leaf surface (up to 69%), while Cu and Zn were the most removed from D. bicolor leaves (98% to 100%). Treatments involving the use of diluted HCl and sodium hexametaphosphate had the highest removal of Pb and Zn, while diluted HCl was effective to release Cd and Cu from leaves. The conscious washing procedure before chemical analysis leaf PTE concentration might significantly modify PTE concentration and the perception of plant accumulation.  相似文献

Purpose

The concentrations and distribution of arsenic (As) in two different soil types (Vertisols and Entisols) of Central Mexico impacted by mine activities and irrigation with As-rich groundwater are analyzed in order to determine their impact on the soil quality, and to contribute reliable data that may help to assess the environmental risk that represents the progressive accumulation of As in the arable soils of Guanajuato.

Materials and methods

Two Entisol and two Vertisol profiles located in the Guanajuato state (Mexico) were described and sampled from ~?1.20-m-deep pits. Soils are irrigated with As-rich deep and shallow groundwaters that were sampled from irrigation boreholes. Additionally, a Vertisol profile located in a parcel not impacted by irrigation was sampled and used as a control soil. Minerals were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). Geoaccumulation indexes (Igeo) were calculated to evaluate As enrichment with respect to a control soil and the Upper Continental Crust (UCC). Anions and cations of groundwater were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), respectively. As in soils was determined by ICP-AES.

Results and discussion

Near total As concentrations are higher in Entisols (mean As value?=?7.20 mg/kg) than in Vertisols (mean As?=?1.02 mg/kg). As concentrations in the control soil are lower (0.34 to 0.70 mg/kg). The in-depth distribution of As in Vertisol profiles reveals that the higher As concentrations are found in the uppermost horizons (10 cm) and they tend to decrease with depth. In Entisols, As concentrations do not follow a vertical trend. Igeo values of As indicate moderate to heavy As contamination in Vertisols and moderate contamination in Entisols. SEM-EDS analyses revealed the presence of some potential As-bearing minerals such as magnetite and abundant Fe oxides and Ti-Fe coatings precipitated onto feldspar grains, particularly in Entisols.

Conclusions

Irrigation of Vertisols with As-rich groundwater determines As concentrations in the uppermost horizons that exceed the natural background of the region (0.4 mg/kg). In depth, clay grain-sized particles inhibit the downward migration of As, while Fe oxides and organic matter scavenge As by adsorption. As concentrations in Entisols are higher, and the in-depth distribution of this element is controlled by periodic contributions of As-bearing minerals delivered from mine prospects located at the river’s catchments.

Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea was suspected in a 1-week-old elk (Cervus elaphus) calf. The isolation of a toxigenic strain of C. difficile from a diarrheic fecal sample, along with exclusion of other enteropathogens, formed the basis of this presumptive diagnosis. Attempts to understand and conserve biodiversity are hampered by a lack of information about many taxonomic groups, particularly those groups that are the most species rich. Although fungi are ubiquitous and play an important role in decomposition, nutrient cycling and nutrient uptake, little is known about fungal diversity, as fungi are usually cryptic and ephemeral. Based on a meta-analysis of macrofungal diversity studies, we show that tree diversity is a promising surrogate for macrofungal diversity at large spatial scales. We present evidence that trees species richness can be used to predict macrofungal species richness and that on the global scale, the distribution of individual tree and macrofungal species notably differs. Additionally our findings provide support for the use of “ratio estimates” to estimate fungal species richness.  相似文献

In the Euro-Mediterranean region, mechanical fuel reduction is increasingly used in response to the mounting occurrence of catastrophic wildfires, yet their long-term ecological effects are poorly understood. Although Mediterranean vegetation is resilient to a range of disturbances, it is possible that widespread fuel management at short intervals may threaten forest structural complexity and the persistence of some plant species and functional types, with overall negative consequences for biodiversity. We used a chronosequence approach to infer woody vegetation changes in the first 70 years after understory clearing in upland cork oak (Quercus suber) forests, and to assess how these are affected by treatment frequency. Across the chronosequence there was a shift between plant communities with contrasting composition, structure and functional organization. Understory cover increased quickly after disturbance and a community dominated by pioneer seeder and dry-fruited shrubs (Cistus ladanifer, C. populifolius, Genista triacanthos, and Lavandula stoechas) developed during about 15 years, but this was slowly replaced by a community dominated by resprouters and fleshy-fruited species (Arbutus unedo, Erica arborea) >40 years after disturbance. During the first 15 years there were rapid increases in woody species richness, vertical structural diversity, cover by Q. suber juveniles and saplings, and shrub cover at <1.5 m strata, which levelled off or slightly declined thereafter. In contrast, tree species richness, tree density and density of arboreal A. unedo and E. arborea, vertical structural evenness, and cover at >1.5 m strata increased slowly for >50 years. Treatment frequency showed strongly negative relationships with species richness, structural diversity and evenness, and horizontal and vertical understory cover, particularly that of slowly recovering species. These findings suggest that fuel reduction programs involving widespread and recurrent understory clearing may lead to the elimination at the landscape scale of stands with complex multi-layered understory occupied by large resprouters and fleshy-fruited species, which take a long time to recover after disturbance. Fuel management programs thus need to balance the dual goals of fire hazard reduction and biodiversity conservation, recognizing the value of stands untreated for >50 years to retain ecological heterogeneity in Mediterranean forest landscapes.  相似文献
