Agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa is a low-input low-output system primarily for subsistence. Some of these areas are becoming less able to feed the people because of land degradation and erosion. The aim of this study is to characterize the potential for increasing levels of soil carbon for improving soil quality and carbon sequestration. A combination of high- and low-resolution imagery was used to develop a land use classification for an area of 64 km2 near Omarobougou, Mali. Field sizes were generally small (10–50 ha), and the primary cultivation systems are conventional tillage and ridge tillage, where tillage is performed by a combination of hand tools and animal-drawn plows. Based on land use classification, climate variables, soil texture, in situ soil carbon concentrations, and crop growth characteristics, the EPIC-Century model was used to project the amounts of soil carbon sequestered for the region. Under the usual management practices in Mali, mean crop yield reported (1985–2000) for maize is 1.53 T ha−1, cotton is 1.2 T ha−1, millet is 0.95 T ha−1, and for sorghum is 0.95 T ha−1. Year-to-year variations can be attributed to primarily rainfall, the amount of plant available water, and the amount of fertilizer applied. Under continuous conventional cultivation, with minimal fertilization and no residue management, the soil top layer was continuously lost due to erosion, losing between 1.1 and 1.7 Mg C ha−1 over 25 years. The model projections suggest that soil erosion is controlled and that soil carbon sequestration is enhanced with a ridge tillage system, because of increased water infiltration. The combination of modeling with the land use classification was used to calculate that about 54 kg C ha−1 year−1 may be sequestered for the study area with ridge tillage, increased application of fertilizers, and residue management. This is about one-third the proposed rate used in large-scale estimates of carbon sequestration potential in West Africa, because of the mixture of land use practices.  相似文献

Effluent lagoons on dairy farms can overflow and potentially pollute adjacent land and associated water bodies. An alternative solution to effluent disposal is needed by dairy operators in island environments. An attractive win‐win alternative is to recycle nutrients from this resource through effluent irrigation for forage grass production that minimizes environmental pollution. This study assessed biomass production and nutrient removal by, and high application rates to, tropical grasses that were subsurface drip‐irrigated with dairy effluent. Four grass species – Banagrass (Pennisetum purpureum K. Schumach.), California grass (Brachiaria mutica (Forssk.) Stapf.), Stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst) and Suerte grass (Paspalum atratum Swallen) – were subsurface (20–25 cm) drip‐irrigated with effluent at two rates based on potential evapotranspiration (ETp) at the site (Waianae, Hawaii) ?2·0 ETp (16 mm d?1 in winter; 23 mm d?1 in summer) and 0·5 ETp (5 mm d?1 in winter; 6 mm d?1 in summer). Treatments were arranged in an augmented completely randomized design. Brachiaria mutica and P. purpureum had the highest dry‐matter yield (43–57 t ha?1 year?1) and nutrient uptake especially with the 2·0 ETp irrigation rate (1083–1405 kg ha?1 year?1 N, 154–164 kg ha?1 year?1 P, 1992–2141 kg ha?1 year?1 K). Average removal of nutrients by the grasses was 25–94% of the applied nitrogen, 11–82% of phosphorus and 2–13% of the potassium. Average values of crude protein (90–160 g kg?1), neutral detergent fibre (570–620 g kg?1) and acid detergent fibre (320–360 g kg?1) were at levels acceptable for feeding to lactating cattle. Results suggest that P. purpureum and B. mutica irrigated with effluent effectively recycled nutrients in the milk production system.  相似文献

Widely popular Mehlich-3 phosphorus (P) was not used in the estimation of the intrinsic status of soil P. The objectives of this study were to develop the state-space model to determine the intrinsic soil P pools, a weakly adsorbed P pool, and a tightly adsorbed P pool, from the Mehlich-3 P. A linear relationship between Mehlich-3 P and the intrinsic soil P pools was derived from theoretical analysis of the extraction process of adsorbed P as competitive exchange by aqueous fluoride. Adsorption experiments of soil P were carried out to determine the dynamics of Mehlich-3 P after fertilizer phosphate was applied to soils. The results showed that state-space models of the two soil P pools could describe the dynamics of soil Mehlich-3 P in P adsorption experiments. Mehlich-3 P was a fraction of the weakly adsorbed P, and this fraction showed a linear relationship with soil P-sorption site density.  相似文献

Preureteral vena cava (circumcaval ureter, retrocaval ureter) occurs in a third of the feline population and has been associated with ureteral strictures in humans. The aim of this retrospective cross‐sectional study was to describe the contrast‐enhanced multidetector row computed tomographic (MDCT) characteristics of presumed preureteral vena cava in a group of cats. Medical records from two institutions located in different continents were searched from 2010–2013 for cases with complete contrast‐enhanced MDCT examinations of the abdomen (i.e. included the entire course of the ureters and prerenal and renal segments of the caudal vena cava) and a diagnosis of preureteral caudal vena cava. For cases meeting inclusion criteria, CT scan data were retrieved and characteristics of the preureteral caudal vena cava were recorded. Presence of concomitant renal or ureteral diseases was also recorded. A total of 272 cats had contrast‐enhanced abdominal CT scans during the study period and of these, 68 cats (22.43 ± 4.96%) had a diagnosis of presumed preureteral vena cava. In all affected cats, a “reverse‐J ureter” was observed, i.e. a ureter running medially at the level of L4–5, passing dorsally to the caudal vena cava and then exiting ventrally between the caudal vena cava and aorta returning to its normal position. Having a preureteral vena cava resulted in an increased risk for concurrent urinary signs (OR = 3.00; CI: 95%; 1.28–6.99; P = 0.01). Findings supported the use of contrast‐enhanced MDCT for characterizing morphology of preureteral vena cava and its relation with ureters in cats.  相似文献

Biosynthetic studies of the prion protein (PrP) have shown that two forms of different topology can be generated from the same pool of nascent chains in cell-free translation systems supplemented with microsomal membranes. A transmembrane form is the predominant product generated in wheat germ (WG) extracts, whereas a completely translocated (secretory) form is the major product synthesized in rabbit reticulocyte lysates (RRL). An unusual topogenic sequence within PrP is now shown to direct this system-dependent difference. The actions of this topogenic sequence were independent of on-going translation and could be conferred to heterologous proteins by the engineering of a discrete set of codons. System-dependent topology conferred by addition of RRL to WG translation products suggests that this sequence interacts with one or more cytosolic factors.  相似文献

A hedgerow intercropping study was conducted for 7 years in West Sumatra, Indonesia on an acid and highly A1-saturated (72%) soil to determine growth and yield responses of tree hedgerows and upland rice and cowpea intercrops. Three tree species,Paraserianthes falcataria, Calliandra calothyrsus, andGliricidia sepium, and a no tree control were planted at three lime rates of zero, 375 kg ha–1, and liming to 25% Al+H saturation. Annual fertilizer inputs of 20 kg P and 50 kg K ha–1 were kept low to approximate low input farming systems. The trees were pruned 4 to 6 times per year and prunings applied to the intercrops.Paraserianthes andCalliandra grew vigorously, whileGiricidia grew poorly and was replaced after four years withFlemingia macrophylla. Hedgerow growth and yields were reported in a previous paper [Evensen et al., 1994].Rice and cowpea yields initially increased with lime andParaserianthes pruning application, but yields and soil cations (Ca, Mg, and K) declined until fertilizer inputs were increased after four years. Thereafter, crop yields increased and soil cations returned to original levels. Soil C and N were maintained over the 7 years on plots with trees. These results indicate little build-up of nutrient cations due to recycling by the trees and suggest that successful alley farming on such highly weathered soils requires maintenance of soil fertility with external inputs.  相似文献

Aerial input of heavy metals into a man-made urban aquatic ecosystem near Gary, Indiana, was monitored for a 5 mo period and compared to that into a rural system. Significantly greater inputs of Cd, Pb, Zn, and Fe were noted for the urban system. Effects of automotive exhaust from the nearby Indiana Toll Road on Pb deposit into the system appeared to be slight. Estimates of the fraction of the total sediment metal burden accounted for by aerial deposit ranged from 69% for Cd to 18% for Fe.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One of the major global trends linked to the process of globalization is the expansion of agro-industry into the humid tropics. Although agro-industry is an important source of income for Brazil, it is also leading to the displacement of local populations and extensive clearing of native vegetation. In this context, we focus on a second trend resulting from globalization in which financial institutions have demonstrated increasing concern with environmental and social responsibility, notably through the inclusion of environmental and social conditions in loans to the agricultural sector. In this article, we provide an assessment of the potential for this type of economic instrument to help reduce the negative impacts of agro-industrial expansion, and how the different actors who are shaping this debate (non-governmental organizations, industries, the finance sector, government) can best help to realize this potential. We evaluate this broader question through the lens of two International Finance Corporation loans to Brazil's Grupo Maggi, the world's largest independently-held soybean exporter. We identify four areas in which private sector self-regulation can improve to realize environmental and social performance goals: (a) Financial institutions and firms can increase the clarity, quality, timeliness, and regularity of monitoring and reporting; (b) Civil society can develop a more sophisticated approach to distinguishing between companies and initiatives that essentially maintain the status quo and those that are trying to improve; (c) Civil society can help to develop simple, standard measures of environmental and social performance of agricultural lands for use by financial institutions and firms in establishing environmental and social management systems; and (d) Governments can develop strong regulations that capitalize on voluntary regulation mechanisms' flexibility and efficiency, as well as developing incentive systems for producers and firms that demonstrate high social and environmental performance in their operations.  相似文献
