Impact of feeding migration pattern on growth rate of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) from River Kemijoki was investigated. River Kemijoki is located in the northernmost Gulf of Bothnia (Baltic Sea). Whitefish ascending the river to spawn show major growth rate variations. To study whether these variations are related to different feeding areas (migratory connectivity), whole otoliths from fast‐growing (FASTG) whitefish (n = 9, age 4 years, average weight 790 g) and slowly growing (SLOWLYG) whitefish (n = 9, age 8 years, average weight 600 g) were analysed for elemental (Ba, Sr, Mg, Zn, Mn, Ca) concentrations by inductively coupled plasma‐optical emission spectrometry. Results showed that the FASTG whitefish had much lower otolith Ba concentration (~45%, ≤ .01) than SLOWLYG whitefish, revealing that FASTG whitefish have spent more time in water of higher salinity/lower latitude, that is at feeding grounds in the southern Gulf of Bothnia. Otoliths of the FASTG whitefish had also higher Mg (~25%, p ≤ .001) and Zn (~20%, p ≤ .05) concentrations, but lower Ca (~5%, p ≤ .01) concentrations, than the otoliths from SLOWLYG whitefish. These results further reveal that FASTG and SLOWLYG whitefish have been spatially separated. In conclusion, bulk otolith elemental analysis revealed spatial separation and migration differences in river‐spawning whitefish subpopulations in the Gulf of Bothnia, which apparently lead to differences in fish growth rate. Our results increase the understanding of river‐spawning whitefish biology and its population structure and dynamics and may contribute to a sustainable management of river‐spawning whitefish stocks.  相似文献

The relationship between the conservation of plant genetic resources and their culture history is intimate. Consequently, biodiversity research must also take into account historical and cultural factors. An inventory of plants collected from all over Sweden was made with the aim of establishing a national Swedish gene bank for once cultivated hop. Only female hop, which could be regarded as cultivated hop on the basis of history, were selected. In this study, two different inventory methods were used: one based on plant habitat and the other involving the use of historical documents, primarily large-scale maps from the first half of the seventeenth century, used to locate their cultivars today. The documented history of the hop, combined with its biology, is the basis for the methods used. Hop is the only Swedish crop that according to a 1442 law had to be cultivated. The law lasted for over 400 years. Since the hop is a perennial, dioecious plant and only female individuals are cultivated, over time very few genetic recombination events are expected. Today, it is possible to connect and identify living plants using historical documents. The degree of connection between today’s living plants and the historical evidence for hop cultivation differ between the two methods.  相似文献

The occurrence of coagulase-negative, novobiocin-resistant staphylococci, i.e. Staphylococcus cohnii, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus sciuri and Staphylococcus xylosus, on the skin of animals and man has been studied. On cultures from cats, cows, dogs, guinea pigs, mice, rabbits and sheep studied, such organisms were predominant among the coagulase-negative staphylococci. From the skin of the hands of 21 of 38 persons whose professions brought them into contact with animals, e.g. inséminât ors, slaughterhouse workers and veterinarians, coagulase-negative, novobiocin-resistant staphylococci were isolated. This finding contrasted with that regarding 50 persons lacking such contacts, of whom only 1 harboured such bacteria. S. saprophyticus was isolated only from those slaughterers presenting with wounds on their hands. Coagulase-negative, novobiocin-resistant staphylococci were also isolated from every second specimen collected from the surface of meat at a slaughterhouse. No difference in the culture results could be demonstrated from specimens collected before and after cutting-up of the carcasses. Of 26 strains of coagulase-negative, DNase-negative staphylococci isolated from milk with pathological CMT, all but 5 were novobiocin-resistant. Fifteen were classified as S. xylosus, 4 as S. sciuri and 1 as S. cohnii. Of another 15 DNase-positive strains, 3 were resistant to novobiocin. Finally, clinical infections with coagulase-negative, novobiocin-resistant staphylococci in man, e.g. urinary tract infections caused by S. saprophyticus, are considered in relation to possible contagious reservoirs and modes of spread.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to explore and gather human reactions and perceptions on computer visualizations of interior wood. The subjective qualities of such products are important because they infl uence the most critical of consumer decisions: to buy or not. To learn more about a phenomenon than quantitative data can provide, qualitative methods are needed. Here, grounded theory was used with focus groups to form a map of 14 people’s experiences of wood. Six computer-generated pictures with visible wood were varied into 18 pictures, such that two-by-two comparison resulted in 3500 words. These were combined into a map that was generated earlier, which had found 2000 words. The main dimensions found were light, color, unity, and authenticity. Light is more than brightness; shadows and lighting seemed more important for the wood feeling, and color and contrast gave life and warmth to the material on the screen. Respondents wanted wood that was more “woody” and “warmer” than wood actually is, that is, a hyper-realistic picture. Perhaps smart modification rather than photorealism should be the goal. Distribution of the earlier found activity and harmony was important for most respondents. In addition, many subjects discussed the composition and/or the context or purpose of the pictures. The impact of wood is not just related to the wood itself; it is also intertwined with its surroundings.  相似文献

Field trials, conducted over 3 consecutive years, were aimed at assessing farmer opinions of the practicality and effectiveness of using Duddingtonia flagrans to control nematode parasites in their flocks on the Swedish island of Gotland. These trials were also monitored by intensive parasitological investigation. On Gotland, lambing occurs in spring, and around mid-summer (late June), ewes and lambs are moved to saved pastures due to pasture deterioration caused by dry conditions. Weaned lambs are then returned to original lambing pastures in early autumn for finishing. One farm (B) was used for 2001-2003 and a second farm (N) was also used in 2002 and 2003. On each farm, two flocks (each of 20 ewes + twin lambs) were managed separately, namely: fungus group which received a daily supplement + fungal spores from lambing until the summer move (6 weeks) and: control group which received supplement only. For Farm B, the numbers of lambs that were marketed prior to the end of the grazing season, were 13, 18, 19 for the fungus treatment whereas corresponding numbers for the control treatment were 8, 16 and 11 for years 2001, 2002 and 2003, respectively. Final weights of the remaining lambs at the end of each year were also consistently heavier, and the numbers of lambs retained for finishing during winter were less, on the fungus treatment compared with the control treatment. On Farm N, similar results were recorded, with more lambs marketed earlier in the fungus group (25 and 19) compared with the control (19 and 15) in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The weights of the remaining lambs at the end of the trial in 2003 showed a 4.5 kg weight gain advantage of the fungus group compared to the controls. Tracer tests during autumn 2001 on Farm B, showed that Teladorsagia circumcincta plus Trichostrongylus spp. levels were significantly less on the fungus treatment (P=0.018). The summer/autumn of 2002 was one of the driest on record for Gotland. This resulted in very low levels of infective larval availability. But on both farms, T. circumcincta numbers were less on the fungus than on the control paddocks (P=0.048 on Farm B). In 2003 very low numbers of infective larvae were recorded in the autumn tracers for both treatments on both farms. Both farmer co-operators were encouraged with these results and consider that biological control of nematode parasites in their flocks, using D. flagrans, is of practical value.  相似文献

A high-gradient extractor for soil microarthropods featuring computer-controlled temperature is described. The extractor's main distinctions are its accurate temperature control and independence from ambient temperature. It is automatic, and produces a graph for documentation of the temperature development during extraction. The drying efficiency of the extractor was investigated and found to be sufficient. Possible future improvements of temperature regimes and extractor design are discussed.  相似文献

Reinvestigation of soil profiles, down to 70 cm depth in mineral soil, sampled for measurements in 1927 revealed a general decrease in pH for spruce and hardwood stands with 0.3 to 0.9 units. The pH-changes in the top soil can partly be explained by biological acidification, increasing with stand age. Stand age and species composition have less influence in deeper soil horizons and much of the acidification there is ascribed to acid deposition.  相似文献
