Little is known about genetic causes of congenital methemoglobinemia in dogs. Here, we report a CYB5R3 mutation in a Pomeranian dog with congenital methemoglobinemia. A 6‐year‐old neutered female Pomeranian dog was investigated for cyanosis noticed during anesthesia for an orthopedic procedure. The history included lifelong mild exercise intolerance and bluish tongue. Methemoglobinemia was diagnosed using co‐oximetry. The CYB5R3 gene was analyzed by comparing the patient's genomic DNA with the reference canine sequence. Mutation functional significance was investigated using snpEff and multispecies protein homology analyses. A homozygous missense single nucleotide CYB5R3 mutation (ATC ? CTC at codon 194) caused a p.Ile194Leu substitution. The pIle194 residue is highly conserved in other mammals, supporting the likely pathogenicity of the substitution. The mutation described here is identical to that associated with familial methemoglobinemia in a family of Japanese Pomeranian dogs. This observation, together with the homozygous mutation found in our case, indicates that the mutant allele may be widespread within the Pomeranian breed internationally. 相似文献

Changes in the sequence of crops grown on agricultural land are well known to enhance the yield of grain crops such as wheat. A survey of the literature gathered from around the world show mean yield benefits of up to 20% or more. Much is known about the principal mechanisms responsible for these benefits, including effects on disease control, improved nitrogen nutrition and water supply, although researchers continue to be challenged by inexplicable “rotation effects” that have yet to be documented or fully understood. This review summarizes our current understanding of the ‘better-known’ mechanisms of crop rotation, and discusses other mechanisms (e.g. changes in rhizosphere biology, allelopathy or soil structure) that may help to account fully for the rotation benefits that have been observed by agricultural producers for more than 2000 years. Where possible we emphasise new techniques employed to investigate these less well-understood aspects of the “rotation effect”. At the farm level, the inability to capitalize on the benefits of break crops may owe more to economics, the availability of suitable break crops and the complexity of the crop response. Computer-based decision support tools have been developed to assist growers to apply the information gathered from scientific studies, although efforts to integrate this information at whole-farm scales are embryonic. 相似文献

This paper shows how the world wide web can facilitate the transformation of a trans‐national identity into a global, or pan‐national identity. Specific to the Philippines diaspora is the concept of tahanang, or home as a metaphor for a pan‐national Philippine identity. Not only does the web facilitate the spatial interactions of diasporic communities but it also fosters the representation of national identity. In the case of the Philippine diaspora we find that social networking, via the web, operates at and through a variety of spatial scales, including intra‐diasporic, inter‐diasporic, diaspora‐host, and diaspora‐homeland. 相似文献

Effects of previous cropping on seed yield and yield components of oil-seed rape (Brassica napus L.)

Information about the effect of the preceding crop or crop combination on the seed yield of oil-seed rape is extremely scarce. Experiments were carried out in northwest Germany to investigate the effect of different preceding crops on the growth, seed yield and yield components of oil-seed rape. The two directly preceding crops, wheat and oil-seed rape, had only a negligible and non-significant effect on the seed yield of the following oil-seed rape crop. Oil-seed rape grown after wheat had more pods per plant, due to an increase in the number of pods on the higher category branches. In contrast, the seed yield and yield components were more affected by the cropping sequence, i.e. the crops 2 years before. Averaged over two experimental years, the greatest yields were observed in oil-seed rape following the sequence peas-wheat (694 g m−2), whereas the smallest seed yield occurred after 2 years of oil-seed rape cropping (371 g m−2). The differences in the seed yield were again associated with more pods per plant, which compensated for the lower number of plants m−2, whereas the number of seeds per pod and the mean seed weight were almost unaffected by the previous cropping. It was not possible to relate the described differences to the crop development, since differences in the biomass caused by the previous cropping were only significant at maturity. Oil-seed rape grown after 2 years of oil-seed rape had the highest ratings of stem canker (Leptosphaeria maculans) as well as verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae). But the general level of the diseases was low, and therefore other causes for the effects described must be considered. 相似文献

This paper describes a new approach for spatial relative risk mapping as a tool for geographical risk assessment. The spatial epidemiological analysis is based on geographically referenced data about pseudorabies (Aujeszky's disease) virus infections at farm level in a region of high animal density in Germany at the beginning of the national eradication project. On the basis of serological findings 186 farms were classified as positive out of a total of 482 investigated farms listed in veterinary administrative registers. Geographical cluster analysis was used to identify two areas of high risk (RR = 2.4 and 3.3). Non‐parametric density estimation was used to estimate the proportion of infected farms per square kilometre. Furthermore, the spatial relative risk function was approximated through the prevalence ratio defined by the ratio of the local prevalence and the overall prevalence of the farms outside the cluster regions. The corresponding approximated relative risk map indicates and quantifies a clear spatial pattern of disease frequency. 相似文献

In this paper, choropleth maps display the geographical distribution of Echinococcus multilocularis in red foxes in Lower Saxony. Areas of high prevalence of the infection in foxes and with high fox population density pose high risk for the human population for alveolar echinococcosis. Spatial statistical methods were used to analyse regional count data obtained from 5365 hunted or found-dead foxes. Spatial smoothing (of raw estimates of regional prevalences based on count data before mapping) was used because raw estimates can give an erratic impression of the spatial pattern of the infection. For smoothing, empirical Bayesian methods are used as an explorative spatial epidemiological tool. The resulting map showed the geographical variation of the estimated prevalences around a median at 9% and indicated the presence of spatial-trend effects. Based on this finding, conditional autoregressive spatial modelling for Freeman-Tukey transformed data was used as an inferential spatial epidemiological tool. There were significant additive linear and quadratic spatial-trend effects with elevated prevalences in the north and south and extreme values (prevalences>38%) for the south of Lower Saxony. 相似文献
