To date, the most widely adopted resource conserving technology in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of South Asia has been zero-tillage (ZT) wheat after rice, particularly in India. The paper reviews and synthesizes the experience with ZT in the Indian IGP. ZT wheat is particularly appropriate for rice–wheat systems in the IGP by alleviating system constraints by allowing earlier wheat planting, helping control the weed Phalaris minor, reducing production costs and saving water. ZT wheat after rice generates substantial benefits at the farm level (US$97 ha−1) through the combination of a ‘yield effect’ (a 5–7% yield increase, particularly due to more timely planting of wheat) and a ‘cost savings effect’ (US$52 ha−1, particularly tillage savings). These benefits explain the widespread interest of farmers and the rapidity of the diffusion across the Indian IGP, further aided by the wide applicability of this mechanical innovation.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematodes of the genus Heterorhabditis are a suitable alternative to chemical insecticides because of their high control effect against insects in cryptic environments and their environmental safety. The availability of H. bacteriophora hybrid strains with increased tolerance to environmental extremes could be a driving force for a more widespread use of nematode-based plant protection products. However, increase in heat and desiccation tolerance of hybrid strains could compromise their fitness regarding virulence, host penetration and reproductive capacity. The fitness of heat and desiccation tolerant hybrid strains was compared to the commercial strain EN 01. Only the heat tolerant strains were superior or similar in fitness to strain EN 01. The strains with increased desiccation tolerance were usually less fit, a possible result of a trade-off effect of selection for desiccation tolerance. Hybrid strains selected for enhanced tolerance after an adaptation to stress were generally better in fitness ranking compared to those for which adaptation prior to stress exposure was excluded. This might be a result of pleitropy. Host penetration and virulence was not correlated. The commercial strain had the highest reproduction per mean number of nematodes penetrating the host insect, which is a result of automatic selection of inbred lines with high reproduction potential during the commercial production process in liquid culture.  相似文献

Objective: To determine (1) the minimum number of throws to form secure Aberdeen (AB) and square knots to start (SS) and end (SE) continuous patterns, in fat‐ and plasma‐coated polydioxanone; and (2) compare relative knot security (RKS) and knot volumes of these secure SS, SE, and AB knots. Study Design: In vitro experimental materials testing. Sample Population: Polydioxanone suture material (3 metric). Methods: Each knot was tested 20 times, and throws incrementally added until secure SS, SE, and AB knots were found. RKS and knot volumes were calculated for SS, SE, and AB knots. Results: Secure SE knots needed 5 throws in plasma or fat. Secure SS knots needed 4 throws in plasma, but 5 in fat. The minimum AB configuration that was secure in plasma or fat was 3+1, however, the 4+1 AB knot was also secure in fat. Mean (SD) RKS of secure knots were: SE 59.69% (5.91), SS 67.92% (12.50), AB 81.08% (8.99). AB knots had significantly higher mean RKS than any SS or SE knot in plasma or fat (P<.001). Mean knot volume of 3+1 AB knot was significantly smaller than any secure SS or SE knots by 22.6–69.4% (P<.0001). Mean knot volume of 4+1 AB knots was significantly smaller than all fat secure SS and SE knots by 19.9–57.5% (P=.0001). Conclusion: The knot security of the SS knot was decreased by fat coating polydioxanone suture, requiring an additional throw to keep it secure. Secure AB knots had a higher breaking strength and smaller knot volume than secure SS and SE knots. Clinical Relevance: The AB may be preferable to square knots in continuous closures. As many body fluids contain lipid, surgeons should tie knot configurations considered secure in fat. We advise tying a 4+1 AB and placing a minimum of 5 throws to tie SS and SE knots using 3 metric polydioxanone.  相似文献

Megaesophagus was diagnosed in 15 llamas on the basis of survey and contrast radiography. Age of onset ranged from 13 months to 9.5 years. Clinical signs varied, with salivation being the most common; regurgitation or dysphagia were noted in only 33% of the cases. Duration of the disorder ranged from 1 week to 5 years. Organophosphate toxicity was the cause of megaesophagusin 1 llama. While most cases were of unknown etiology, the 3 with histological abnormalities included 1 with vagal neuropathy and 2 with a degenerative myopathy of esophageal muscles. The many faces of disease mapping include maps of disease case locations, regional counts of cases, and disease risk. Another approach is that of mapping the relative risk. Previous methods to map the relative risk were based on regression models of relative risk, given information about geographical locations and established risk factors. However, spatial epidemiological investigations are often exploratory with limited knowledge about the putative risk factors. Indeed, often the primary motivation for the analysis is to identify unknown geographically varying risk factors.

An exploratory approach to mapping the spatial relative risk is to scale the risk map using the background risk in the unexposed (or less-exposed) population. Exposure to unknown spatial risk factors is defined via specific cluster analysis. Identification of spatial disease clusters separates the population into those inside and those outside high risk areas (the exposed and unexposed populations). This exploratory approach to relative risk mapping gives the investigator an impression about the importance and geographical distribution of the unknown spatial risk factors.

Two examples illustrate the exploratory relative risk mapping approach using a spatial point data set on pseudorabies in pig-herds and a regional count data set on small fox tapeworm infections in red foxes.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Saatgut und Getreide kann mit niederenergetischen Elektronen (<300 keV) oder hochenergetischen Elektronen (1–10 MeV) wirksam behandelt werden, um Mikroorganismen und Insekten abzutöten. In dieser vorläufigen Studie wurde Mais mit niederenergetischen (125 keV) und hochenergetischen Elektronen (10 MeV) behandelt. Um diese Elektronenbehandlung nachzuweisen, wurden verschiedene Verfahren eingesetzt: Photostimulierte Lumineszenz (PSL), Thermolumineszenz (TL) und DNA-Kometentest. Für diese drei Nachweismethoden existieren bereits Europäische Normen und sie sind als Allgemeine Codex Methoden zum Nachweis bestrahlter Lebensmittel etabliert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass PSL und TL geeignete Verfahren sind, um sowohl eine Behandlung von Mais mit niederenergetischen als auch mit hochenergetischen Elektronen zu erkennen. Der DNA-Kometentest erwies sich als weniger geeignet: die Behandlung mit niederenergetischen Elektronen konnte—wie erwartet—nicht nachgewiesen werden. Die Behandlung mit hochenergetischen Elektronen konnte bei einer Maissorte erkannt werden, jedoch nicht bei einer anderen Sorte.  相似文献

This paper describes a new approach for spatial relative risk mapping as a tool for geographical risk assessment. The spatial epidemiological analysis is based on geographically referenced data about pseudorabies (Aujeszky's disease) virus infections at farm level in a region of high animal density in Germany at the beginning of the national eradication project. On the basis of serological findings 186 farms were classified as positive out of a total of 482 investigated farms listed in veterinary administrative registers. Geographical cluster analysis was used to identify two areas of high risk (RR = 2.4 and 3.3). Non-parametric density estimation was used to estimate the proportion of infected farms per square kilometre. Furthermore, the spatial relative risk function was approximated through the prevalence ratio defined by the ratio of the local prevalence and the overall prevalence of the farms outside the cluster regions. The corresponding approximated relative risk map indicates and quantifies a clear spatial pattern of disease frequency.  相似文献

In North America, the only endemic focus for Angiostrongylus vasorum (French heartworm) was historically thought to occur in the southeastern part of the island of Newfoundland. However, reports of A. vasorum infection in wild canids in West Virginia, USA, and Nova Scotia, Canada, suggest the introduction of the parasite to mainland North America. We screened for A. vasorum in coyotes from across southern Ontario. Additionally, we evaluated the performance of ELISAs for detection of circulating A. vasorum antigen (Ag-ELISA) and antibodies against A. vasorum (Ab-ELISA) designed for use in sera or blood of foxes for use with coyotes in this region. Autopsies were performed on 397 coyotes, and lung tissue extract prepared from each carcass was tested via both ELISAs. The sensitivity and specificity for both tests were estimated in the absence of a gold standard using a 2-test single population Bayesian model; sensitivity and specificity priors were based on the performance of the assays in foxes in Switzerland. Eight coyotes tested positive for A. vasorum antigen; no animal was antibody positive. The estimated sensitivity and specificity of the Ag-ELISA were 90.8% (95% credible interval [CrI]: 83.8–95.6%) and 95.5% (95% CrI: 93.4–97.2%), respectively. For the Ab-ELISA, the estimated sensitivity and specificity were 41.9% (95% CrI: 32.1–51.9%) and 98.0% (95% CrI: 96.3–99.0%), respectively. Based on these findings and negative postmortem data for the same animals, there is insufficient evidence to suggest the presence of A. vasorum in southern Ontario coyotes.  相似文献
