Effect of copper on formation of green mass and nutritional qualities of broad beans

It is shown on the basis pot experiment data that, depending on the concentration and length of effect of copper, not only the magnitude but also the direction of the effect can change. A dose-dependent accumulation of the metal and an increase in crude protein content are noted in the green mass of broad beans at a copper pollution level in sod-podzolic soil of 100–300 mg/kg.     

Effect of Synthetic Lysine Vasopressin on Adrenocortical Secretion

By means of direct arterial perfusion of the adrenal glands in the dog it has been shown that synthetic lysine vasopressin stimulates the secretion of hydrocortisone. This effect is not mediated via the adenohypophysis or any other organ but is rather the result of direct stimulation of the adrenal cortex by vasopressin itself.     

Evolution of a balanced sex ratio by frequency-dependent selection in a fish

Balanced (1 to 1) sex ratios are thought to evolve by a process known as frequency- dependent selection of the minority sex. Five populations of a fish with genetically based variation in temperature-dependent sex determination were maintained for 5 to 6 years in artificial constant-temperature environments that initially caused the sex ratio to be highly skewed. Increases in the proportion of the minority sex occurred in subsequent generations until a balanced sex ratio was established, thus confirming a central premise underlying the theory of sex-ratio evolution.     

Suppression of mutations in mitochondrial DNA by tRNAs imported from the cytoplasm

Mitochondrial import of a cytoplasmic transfer RNA (tRNA) in yeast requires the preprotein import machinery and cytosolic factors. We investigated whether the tRNA import pathway can be used to correct respiratory deficiencies due to mutations in the mitochondrial DNA and whether this system can be transferred into human cells. We show that cytoplasmic tRNAs with altered aminoacylation identity can be specifically targeted to the mitochondria and participate in mitochondrial translation. We also show that human mitochondria, which do not normally import tRNAs, are able to internalize yeast tRNA derivatives in vitro and that this import requires an essential yeast import factor.     

Exposed water ice deposits on the surface of comet 9P/Tempel 1

We report the direct detection of solid water ice deposits exposed on the surface of comet 9P/Tempel 1, as observed by the Deep Impact mission. Three anomalously colored areas are shown to include water ice on the basis of their near-infrared spectra, which include diagnostic water ice absorptions at wavelengths of 1.5 and 2.0 micrometers. These absorptions are well modeled as a mixture of nearby non-ice regions and 3 to 6% water ice particles 10 to 50 micrometers in diameter. These particle sizes are larger than those ejected during the impact experiment, which suggests that the surface deposits are loose aggregates. The total area of exposed water ice is substantially less than that required to support the observed ambient outgassing from the comet, which likely has additional source regions below the surface.     

Protective role of bioregulator stifun under the negative effect of cadmium

The effect of stifun on wheat, Welsh onion, and corn plants under the effect of cadmium is investigated. The protective effect of this bioregulator manifested itself in preventing inhibition of growth, stabilizing mitotic phases, and reducing the level of chromosomal aberrations. The results of histochemical investigations permit the assumption that growth regulators can reduce the uptake of cadmium ions into plant tissues.     

Identification of Bovine Blood B Cells with the Immunoperoxidase Staining Method

The mechanism of formation and the receptor-binding and functional properties of the B-lymphocyte subpopulations in the various immune pathologies are the factors that can affect the basic principles of initiation of a specific immune response and its relationship with the innate immunity of an organism. Identification of the positions of the immunoglobulin receptors on the lymphocytes is the specific clinical information on more accurate disease pathogenesis and differential diagnosis. The survey has proven that the IgM C₂ and C₉ monoclonal antibodies interact with the bovine blood B-lymphocytes. The relative numbers of B cells in the animal peripheral blood and the variation in the positions of the Ig receptors have been determined with the method for direct immunoperoxidase staining.     

Protein electrophoresis as an aid to oat variety identification

Summary Ten cultivars of oats (Avena sativa L.) were investigated for their isozymes of esterase (E), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and anodal and cathodal peroxidase (APX and CPX).From repeated observations, a typical zymogram was prepared for each enzyme system, and the frequencies of the isozyme bands were scored for each variety separately. The results showed that: (1) most of the isozyme bands are very stable in their appearance on the gel: (2) each variety has a characteristic isozyme pattern; (3) 7 out of 10 oat cultivars showed no intravarietal isozyme variation. Some variation was found for the varieties Mesa, Rapida and Curt. This overall high level of homozygosity and homogeneity of these varieties for the isozyme bands makes this technique useful for varietal identification.
