The present study was designed to determine the effects of supplemental fat or oil rich in oleic acid on the fatty acid profiles (FAP) and physical and sensory traits of pork carcasses. Sixty barrows and gilts were equally distributed among five dietary treatments consisting of a control diet of corn and soybean meal and four similar test diets that contained 10% animal fat (45.3 oleic), safflower oil (72.1 oleic), sunflower oil (80.9 oleic) or canola oil (57.7 oleic). The pigs were slaughtered after being fed these diets for 90 d at about 100 kg live weight. Carcass traits, FAP and sensory properties were evaluated for each treatment. First-rib fat thickness, ham muscling score and longissimus muscle areas were not different (P less than .05), but last-rib fat thickness was increased (P less than .05) with the supplemental dietary fat or oils. No differences existed for marbling scores, lean color, firmness or texture scores between the controls and pigs supplemented with either animal fat or safflower oil. However, pigs supplemented with sunflower or canola oil had lower marbling scores, lean color, firmness and texture scores. Fat became softer and more oily (P less than .05) with the supplemental dietary safflower, sunflower and canola oils. Sensory evaluation (loin chops) showed no differences (P less than .05) in sustained juiciness, tenderness or flavor intensity evaluations among treatments. However, the pigs fed canola oil had lower (P less than .05) flavor quality scores or overall palatability evaluations. Chops from the pigs fed canola oil also had 46% more off-flavors than all other treatments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether intravaginal prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) would be effective for the treatment of metritis or pyometra in the bitch. Seventeen bitches with metritis or pyometra were treated with PGF2 alpha. Prostaglandin F2 alpha (150 micrograms/kg body weight) was administered once or twice daily by infusing 0.3 ml per 10 kg body wt into the vaginal lumen. Bitches were also treated with amoxicillin (15 mg/kg body wt/48 h) and/or gentamicin (4 mg/kg body wt/day) administered as intramuscular (i.m.) injections. Fifteen bitches were treated successfully with intravaginally administered PGF2 alpha for 3 to 12 days and with intramuscularly administered antibiotics for 4 to 12 days. Success of treatment was judged by cessation of vaginal discharge, the absence of fluid in the uterus as determined by ultrasonography, and the overall health status of the animal. As two bitches with pyometra showed clinical deterioration in spite of medical treatment, ovariohysterectomy was performed after the first and the second treatment, respectively. No side effects (salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperpnoea, ataxia, urination, anxiety, pupillary dilatation followed by contraction) were observed after PGF2 alpha treatment. The disease did not recur during the subsequent oestrous cycles within 12 months after the initial treatment. The results demonstrate that intravaginal administration of PGF2 alpha was effective in 13 dogs (86.6%) with metritis or pyometra, and caused no side effects. Although the study was based on a relatively small number of cases, it is concluded that prostaglandin F2 alpha can be a useful means of treating bitches with metritis or pyometra. However, in severe cases of pyometra ovariohysterectomy is needed.
A 5-month-old female Great Dane puppy was treated for hematochezia, tenesmus, and rectal prolapse by resection of a 10-cm-long segment of colon and rectum. Grossly, the colorectal segment had diffuse mucosal and submucosal thickening with multiple polypoid nodules. The histologic diagnosis was colorectal hamartomatous polyps with ganglioneuromatosis. Duplication of PTEN was detected by quantitative multiplex polymerase chain reaction testing. The presence of 2 hamartomatous colorectal lesions with PTEN mutation is similar to human Cowden syndrome.
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Recombinant equine growth hormone (reGH) has recently been evaluated for effects on body condition and wound healing. It has the potential to influence articular cartilage via stimulation of IGF-1. OBJECTIVES: To investigate effects of administration on synovial joint metabolism. METHODS: Six mature horses were given 20 microg/kg bwt reGH daily for 8 weeks by i.m. injection. Three control horses were injected with sterile water. Serum and synovial fluid samples were collected at 6, 8, 11 and 16 weeks for GH and IGF-1 assays. Articular cartilage harvested at week 16 was evaluated by Western analysis using monoclonal antibodies BC-13, BC-4, 8-A-4 and CH-3. RESULTS: Concentrations of IGF-1 in serum and synovial fluid were significantly elevated (P < 0.05) at 6 and 8 weeks in the reGH group. Glycosaminoglycan concentrations in synovial fluid were significantly less than controls at these time points, suggesting that reGH may modulate proteoglycan metabolism in articular cartilage. In the reGH group, there were not any alterations in synovial fluid content of 3B3(-) epitope or aggrecan metabolite, or in aggrecan or link protein catabolites retained within cartilage, that might be expected with development of osteoarthritis. CONCLUSIONS: Intramuscular administration of reGH may be a more efficient means of delivery of IGF-1 to joints for cartilage resurfacing initiatives. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: We found no alterations in cartilage metabolism indicative of development of osteoarthritis.
Selenium is a trace element of importance for animal health. It is essential for adequate functioning of many enzymes such as, the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase, which protects the cell against free radicals. A muscular effort induces a rise in reactive oxygen species production which, in turn, can generate an oxidative stress. Two groups of eight racing pigeons were fed respectively with a diet containing 30.3 (control group) and 195.3 (selenium group) μg selenium/kg diet. The pigeons were submitted to a standardised simulation of a flying effort during 2 h. Blood was taken before and after the effort to measure antioxidant markers and blood parameters related to muscle metabolism. Plasma selenium concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity were significantly higher in the selenium group. There were no significant differences for the other measured parameters. As a consequence of the effort, the pigeons of the selenium group showed a higher increase of glutathione peroxidase activity and a smaller increase of plasma lactate concentration. Variations because of the effort in the other markers were not significantly different between the two groups. It is concluded that the selenium status was improved with the feeding of feedstuffs high in Selenium.
Chicks and chickens maintained under commercial conditions were vaccinated against Newcastle Disease via drinking water. Prior and after different times of vaccination blood samples were drawn from different numbers of birds and checked for HI antibodies. The modes of distribution of the antibody titers within the random sample were assayed. The following results were obtained:
1. 1. On the basis of the distribution of the serum titers can be concluded whether the antibody level within a flock is increasing or decreasing.
◦ —A right steep asymmetry can be observed up to 20 days post vaccination.
◦ —In the phase of maximal antibody levels an almost symmetric distribution of the titers is present.
◦ —In later times (more than three weeks p. vacc.) the distribution shows a left steep asymmetry (Poisson distribution).
2. 2. A poisson distribution is also observable during the elimination of maternal antibodies of chicks until complete elimination.
3. 3. The mode of distribution of the HI titers in sera of day-old chicks correlates with the mode of distribution of the dams. Therefore, conclusions are possible from the status of the chicks to the dams and reverse.
4. 4. Factors which interfere with the mode of distribution are:
◦ —Two or more peaks after vaccination of chickens. This indicates an uneven immune response within the flock.
◦ —Distributions with several peaks may also occur if flocks are composed of day-old chicks from parent flocks with different levels of antibody titers.
Clonidine (CL) is a alpha2-adrenergic agonist that produces analgesia in animals and humans by a non-opiate alpha2-adrenergic action in the spinal cord dorsal horn. The objective of this prospective randomized study was to investigate the clinical effects of CL/lidocaine (LD) combination administered by the subarachnoid route in sheep. Each sheep received each of three treatments, at no shorter than weekly intervals. Treatments consisted of 0.003 mg/kg CL, 1.2 mg/kg LD and a combination of CL (0.003 mg/kg) and LD (1.2 mg/kg) (CLLD). Subarachnoid injections were given in all animals between the last lumbar and first sacral vertebra. Heart rate (HR), arterial pressures, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, analgesia, sedation, and motor blockade were determined before drug administration (basal) and 5, 10, 15 and 30 min after drug administration, and at 30-min intervals until loss of analgesia occurred. The duration of analgesia after subarachnoid CLLD administration was 187 +/- 24 min (mean +/- SD), i.e. more than twice of that obtained with CL (99 +/- 19 min) or LD (55 +/- 4.4 min) alone. In all sheep, CL, administered either alone or with LD, induced moderate sedation. After subarachnoid administration of three treatments, all sheep had ataxia and subsequent sternal recumbency. The CL treatment causes decreases in blood pressure (diastolic arterial pressure and mean arterial pressure) and HR. Data suggest that the CLLD combination could be used subarachnoidally in sheep requiring prolonged surgery.
The objectives of this study were to assess changes in nutritional status/body condition score, percentage pregnancy and calving
rate in Zebu cows and to establish the relationship between body condition score loss and postpartum interval to resumption
of ovarian activity. A total of 198 cows and postpubertal heifers of the Tanzanian Shorthorn Zebu kept under a traditional
management system were randomly selected from 200 smallholder herds. Factors investigated during bi-weekly visits include
body condition score (BCS), heart-girth circumference, milk yield and reproductive status of the animals, pregnancy/non-pregnancy
and cyclicity/non-cyclicity. Local weather conditions and dates of occurrence of other reproductive events such as calving
were also recorded. Calvings occurred all year round but with a strong seasonal distribution characterized by annual peaks
observed between April and July. The annual calving pattern was closely related to rainfall, with peak precipitation occurring
a few months before peak calving. The overall percentage pregnancy varied from 30% to 50% throughout the year. Postpartum
cows exhibited minimum mean BCS and heart-girth circumference 12–14 weeks after calving, and cows with BCS loss >1 point exhibited
the longest time interval from calving to onset of ovarian activity.
