Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are the most endangered of the seven species of sea turtles. The health status of leatherbacks is largely unknown, although the number of nesting females recorded throughout the world has decreased precipitously in the last few decades. Central African beaches may provide one of the last strongholds for nesting leatherback females. In the region, oil extraction and incidental capture pose significant threats to the health of the population. Physical examinations, hematology, plasma biochemistry, plasma corticosterone concentration, plasma protein electrophoresis, plasma vitamin concentrations, and toxicological parameters were evaluated in nesting female leatherbacks in the Republic of Gabon. The general clinical condition of the 35 turtles examined in this study was rated as good. The blood value results for a subset of these turtles are presented and compared to published results from other sea turtles. To the authors' knowledge, these are the first published baseline hematology, plasma biochemistry, and plasma protein electrophoresis values from clinically healthy nesting leatherback turtles.  相似文献

The nutritional biology of the oribatid mite Archegozetes longisetosus Aoki was examined using a control (starvation) and four types of food: Protococcus sp. algae from tree bark, two fungi—Stachybothrys sp. and Alternaria sp.—and filter paper. Direct observations, histology, enzymology and plating techniques were employed to record contact with food, contents and structure of the alimentary tract, presence and viability of bacterial microorganisms inside the mite body, and chitinase and cellulase activity of mite homogenates. Algae were highly palatable, resulting in high apocrine secretion and guts that were continuously full. Initially there was no evidence of chitinase or cellulase production. Chitinase activity started after 10 days, probably due to consumption of fungi that invaded the algal cover, and correlated with the presence of chitinolytic bacteria (Serratia rubidea) in the mite homogenate. Alternaria was grazed intensively, but cell walls of spores and hyphae remained intact and no chitinase was detected suggesting that only cell contents were enzymatically digested. Stachybothrys sp. was rejected as food. The bacterium Alcaligenes faecalis was dominant in homogenates in each of the treatments, but under starvation Achromobacter xylosoxidans became co-dominant. Cellulase activity was not detected in any treatment, but strong chitinase activity was induced with a filter paper (colonized by invasive fungi) diet. Furthermore, bacteria were common in mesenchyme between the internal organs in the filter paper and starvation treatments.  相似文献

A 1.7-kg mature, female brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) was diagnosed with egg retention. Eggs could not be manually stripped and so were surgically removed. To prevent future complications, bilateral ovariectomy was performed. Complications were minimal, and the fish resumed eating within 2 days. Sutures were removed 21 days after surgery. Ovariectomy in display aquarium fish is a viable option for the resolution of ovarian disease.  相似文献

Adult dogs possess strong diurnal locomotor activity/rest rhythms, and sleep/wake patterns have been characterized. However, behavioral sleep/wake data are lacking related to aging and daily feeding pattern. Three groups (young adults [Y], 1.5–4.5 years; middle-aged adults [M], 7–9 years; and senior, 11–14 years) of beagles (N = 48) wore the Actiwatch activity monitoring system (Respironics Co., Inc., Bend, OR) for 3 days while housed indoors with 12-hour light/dark schedule and fed once or twice daily. Actiware-Rhythm software (version 5.52; Respironics Co., Inc., Bend, OR) was used to estimate behavioral sleep or wake from locomotor activity data. All dogs demonstrated diurnal sleeping patterns. Total wake minutes during the light phase declined with age (P < 0.05) and differed by 7.7% and 10.2% for middle-aged adults and seniors, respectively, compared with young adults. Further analysis revealed that increased light phase nap bouts (P < 0.008), not increased nap duration, caused this decline. Total sleep minutes during the night increased with age, as middle-aged adults and seniors slept at least 38 (P = 0.01) more minutes than young adults. Increased sleep time at night resulted from a longer sleep interval duration (P = 0.05), delayed morning activity onset time (P = 0.02), and marginally fewer waking bouts (P = 0.07). Independent of age, twice-daily feeding significantly influenced daytime sleeping patterns but did not affect total minutes recorded as sleep during the day. Interestingly, napping bouts decreased significantly (P = 0.01) and napping duration increased (P = 0.0001) when fed twice-daily. Twice-daily feeding was also associated with earlier sleep onset time at night and onset of morning activity, as well as shortened sleep interval. Clear changes in behavioral sleep patterns were observed with age and daily feeding schedule.  相似文献
