Clinical, ophthalmoscopic, and histopathologic findings of vitamin A deficiency in a group of 535 feedlot cattle are described. Liver vitamin A content and results of histologic examination of ocular and osseous (optic canal) tissue confirmed the diagnosis. Blindness was the only clinical sign observed. Even though the steers and heifers in this feedlot were approximately the same age and were fed the same ration for an equal period, none of the heifers had overt clinical signs of hypovitaminosis A. Production of vitamin A by the bovine corpus luteum may account for the sexual dimorphism observed in vitamin A-deficient cattle. 相似文献

SUMMARY The epidemiological, clinical and pathological features of a disease syndrome in adult cattle grazing woolly-pod vetch (Vicia villosa ssp dasycarpa) or popany vetch (V benghalensis) are reported. Outbreaks of toxlcosis occurred between midwinter and midsummer in 3 dairy and 6 beef herds on the north coast of New South Wales, between 1982 and 1992. Friesian, Angus, Murray Grey, Guernsey and Hereford breeds were affected. Mean morbidity and case fatality rates in affected herds were 7% (65 of 889) and 69%, respectively. Signs of pruritic dermatitis, illthrift and death were associated with an eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation of many organs, particularly involving the renal cortex, dermis, myocardium, adrenal glands, lymph nodes and hepatic portal triads. 相似文献

Comparison of carbon fibre and nylon suture for repair of transected flexor tendons in the horse 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Carbon fibre-polylactic acid composites and monofilament non-absorbable suture material were compared for the repair of surgically transected superficial digital flexor tendons in 10 horses. All surgical wounds healed by first intention. The repaired tendons were enlarged, the carbon implanted tendons being larger than those sutured. The horses were killed at six, eight, 12,20 or 24 weeks. Greater fibrous thickening occurred in tendons repaired with carbon fibre, especially at 12 weeks postoperatively. Carbon fibre incited a greater histological response with macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils and fibroblasts. The fibrous tissue in the repair sites appeared to mature and the collagen to align at a similar rate irrespective of the method of repair. Only that tissue within and immediately surrounding the carbon bundles was immature at six months. There was minimal tendency for carbon filaments to separate and those that did were often surrounded by epithelioid macrophages forming a granuloma. Massive eosinophil concentrations were present between each granuloma. With each sequential test period the sutured tendons became increasingly stronger than the carbon implanted tendons. Bone was collected for trabecular bone morphometry from 6 dogs with hypercalcemia of malignancy. Five of the dogs had lymphosarcoma and 1 had an anal sac apocrine gland carcinoma with vertebral metastases. Parathyroid gland weights varied around normal, with those for 1 dog being slightly low and those for another dog being moderately increased. As a group, the dogs had decreased bone volume, with increased resorption surfaces and increased numbers of osteoclasts. In 4 dogs, osteoid seams and osteoblasts were limited in extent and this distinguished them from dogs with hyperparathyroidism. Although most dogs had received corticosteroids, chemotherapy, or radiation treatment, the bone changes in these dogs were similar to 1 dog that had not received treatment. Also, the changes could not be related to uremia or renal mineralization that had developed in 2 of the dogs. Two of the dogs had somewhat greater amounts of osteoid-covered surface and slightly widened osteoid seams, ie, findings more like those of hyperparathyroidism. One of these dogs had anal sac apocrine gland carcinoma and the other had lymphosarcoma in which there was invasion of the bone cortex at the sampling site. It was concluded that bone remodeling changes do occur in hypercalcemia of malignancy and that these changes are varied and often are not those of hyperparathyroidism. 相似文献
