Impacts of plant invasions are largely scale-dependent and responses to the same exotic species may vary among communities. Since impacts caused by individual trees could anticipate consequences of a closed canopy of an invader, we studied the response of Galápagos native plants to quinine (Cinchona pubescens) trees in two vegetation zones. Quinine has invaded >11,000 ha of Santa Cruz Island, including the Miconia- and Fern-Sedge-Zones. We analysed species composition and abundance along transects radiating from the trunks of individual quinine trees. Species richness and percentage cover decreased significantly with proximity to individual trees, and these effects were more pronounced in the Fern-Sedge Zone than in the Miconia Zone. Cover of endemic and native herb species and grass species significantly declined by 57–88% in the Fern-Sedge Zone. This was not the case in the Miconia Zone, but here the dominant endemic Miconia robinsoniana decreased by 41%. Quinine is a major driver of plant community change in both vegetation zones. The greater susceptibility of species in the Fern-Sedge Zone was ascribed to the presence of a new growth form: quinine trees in a formerly treeless environment. Species of the Miconia Zone appeared to be better pre-adapted to higher shade levels created by the Miconia shrubs. Our results emphasize the need for future control of quinine to preserve the diversity of the native Galápagos flora.  相似文献

The long-term storage of soil organic matter (SOM) in forest soils is still poorly understood. In this study, particle size fractionation in combination with accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) and solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was applied to investigate organic carbon (OC) stabilisation in Cambisol and Luvisol profiles under spruce (Picea abies) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forests. In most samples, OC was preferentially associated with <2 μm fractions. Throughout soil profiles the contribution of OC in the clay fraction to the total OC increased from 27%-53% in A horizons to 44-86% in E, B and EB horizons. The 200-2000 μm fractions from all sites and all depths showed a percentage of modern C (pmC)>100. They were enriched in 14C owing to high inputs of recent material from leaves and roots. Clearly less active material was associated with <2 and 2-20 μm fractions. This demonstrated that the particle size fractionation procedure applied to our study was capable to isolate a young OC fraction in all samples. The pmC values were strongly decreasing with depth but the decrease was much more pronounced in the fine fractions. The <2 and 2-20 μm fractions of B, E and EB horizons revealed radiocarbon ages between 512 and 4745 years before present which indicated that the SOM in those horizons was little affected by the recent vegetation. The major components of labile and stable SOM pools in topsoils and subsoils were always O/N-alkyl C (28-53%) and alkyl C (14-48%) compounds. NMR spectra of bulk soils and particle size fractions indicated that high alkyl C and O/N-alkyl C proportions throughout the soil profile are typical of Cambisols and Luvisols which were not subjected to regular burning. A relation between radiocarbon age and chemical composition throughout soil profiles was not observed. This suggests that the long-term stabilisation of SOM is mainly controlled by the existence of various mechanisms of protection offered by the soil matrix and soil minerals but not by the chemical structure of SOM itself.  相似文献

The goals of this study were to present a technique of digitalised sound recordings and phonocardiograms (dPCGs), and to analyse its diagnostic capabilities. Heart sounds of 20 dogs were auscultated in vivo (on-line) and recorded with dPCGs by two authors using a Welch Allyn Meditron Stethoscope System. Sound recordings were auscultated off-line and blindly by four different observers having various auscultatory experiences, then listened to while viewing dPCGs. The results were compared to echocardiographic diagnoses. There was a significant agreement (p < 0.001) between on-line and off-line auscultatory findings regarding the four observers, ranging from 45% to 75% (weighted kappa values: 0.72 to 0.87). The best agreement was achieved by Observer 1 having the highest experience. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between Observer 1 and Observer 4 (with the lowest experience) in judging the quality of the murmurs during the off-line and blind auscultation. However, there were only minimal differences (95% to 100% agreements) in dPCG analyses among the four observers regarding intensity and quality of the murmurs while simultaneously listening to and viewing the dPCGs. Significant correlations were found between the traditional '0 to 6 scale' and a new '0 to 3 scale' murmur intensity gradings by all observers (correlation coefficients 0.640 to 0.908; p < 0.01 to p < 0.001). Analysis of dPCGs might be a valuable, additional tool helping with the diagnosis of canine cardiac murmurs, especially for those with less cardiological experience.  相似文献

There are two classes of photoreceptor cells in the median ocellus of Limulus. One class of cells respond to long wavelength (visible) stimuli with a depolarizing receptor potential and to near ultraviolet light with a biphasic, initially hyperpolarizing, receptor potential. The other class of receptors respond with a depolarization to near ultraviolet and with a biphasic response to visible light. In the latter type of cell, visible light can counteract the depolarization elicited by near ultraviolet light. The evidence suggests that there are two photopigments in each cell and that both are involved in the generation of receptor potential.  相似文献

One of the most important tasks in precision farming is the site-specific application of fertilisers and pesticides in heterogeneous large-area fields. For such site-specific crop management, effective remote sensing methods for the detection of crop diseases and nutrient deficiencies are required. The aim of the present work was to compare laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) parameters from nitrogen-deficient and pathogen (rust and mildew)-infected winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants and to assess the potential of LIF to detect and discriminate between these types of stress. Both long term nitrogen deficiency and pathogen infection resulted in an increase of the ratio of fluorescence at 686 and 740 nm (F686/F740) accompanied by a reduction of leaf chlorophyll content to approximately 35 μg cm−2. A linear negative correlation between chlorophyll content and F686/F740 ratio (r= 0.78) was found for leaves with chlorophyll content ranging between 17 and 52 μg cm−2. Since chlorophyll breakdown appeared an unspecific symptom to both nitrogen deficiency and pathogen infection, it was not possible to discriminate between these types of stress only by means of the F686/F740 ratio. Specific for the pathogen-infected leaves was a large heterogeneity in the records of their spectral parameters caused by inhomogeneous, discrete lesions of fungi infection. Nitrogen-deficient plants with homogeneous reduction in chlorophyll content showed, in contrast, more uniform readings of the spectral parameters. Thus, mildew- and rust-infected plants, grown under sufficient nitrogen fertilisation could be distinguished from those grown under reduced nitrogen supply by the higher variance of their spectral readings. The simultaneous scanning multipoint mode measurements of LIF and laser light reflection characteristics with parallel estimation of their heterogeneity is proposed for the discrimination between nitrogen deficiency and pathogen infection under field conditions.  相似文献

Substantial amounts of Macrocystis and Lessonia are traditionally harvested and exported from Chile as raw material for alginate. Because of intense mariculture of abalone (Haliotis ssp.), herbivorous molluscs that feed on brown kelps, pressure on local populations of Macrocystis and Lessonia has increased to critical levels within the past 5 years, strongly supporting efforts to produce algae maricultured biomass. Here, we present our results on the development of new techniques for large‐scale kelp mariculture in Chile. We have abandoned the traditional technique of direct spore seeding onto inoculation lines. Instead, we used gametophyte cultures that were manipulated to enter gametogenesis and to produce synchronous batches of 104–105 embryos. Juvenile sporophytes were cultured under permanent aeration and agitation, floating unattached in contamination‐free glass bottles up to 10 L, plexiglass cylinders and 800 L greenhouse tanks. When holdfast initials were formed at a size of 8 cm, the sporophytes were spliced into Nylon rope fragments and transferred to the sea. Twelve months after initiation of gametogenesis in the laboratory, Macrocystis pyrifera attained 14 m length and 80 kg fresh weight m?1 line in the sea. For Lessonia trabeculata 6 months after gametogenesis initiation, 0.25 kg fresh weight m?1 was attained in the sea.  相似文献

It has been estimated that about half of a plant??s total hydraulic resistance is located belowground, but it is not well known how temperate tree species differ in root hydraulic properties and how these traits vary with the species?? drought tolerance.

? Aims

We examined root anatomical and hydraulic traits in five broad-leaved tree species with different drought tolerance, analyzed the relation between root anatomy and hydraulic conductivity and root embolism, and investigated the relation of these traits to the species?? drought tolerance.

? Methods

In small-diameter roots (2?C6?mm), we measured vessel diameters and vessel density, specific hydraulic conductivity, and the percental loss of conductivity (??native?? embolism) during summer in a mixed forest.

? Results

Specific conductivity was positively related to vessel diameter but not to vessel density. Drought-tolerant Fraxinus showed the smallest mean vessel diameters and drought-sensitive Fagus the largest. Specific conductivity was highly variable among different similar-sized roots of the same species with a few roots apparently functioning as ??high-conductivity roots??.

? Conclusion

The results show that coexisting tree species can differ largely in root hydraulic traits with more drought-sensitive trees apparently having larger mean vessel diameters in their roots than tolerant species. However, this difference was not related to the observed root conductivity losses due to embolism.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Intestinal immune regulation including development of oral tolerance is of great importance for the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. Concerning this, regulatory T cells (Tregs) occupy a pivotal role in cell-mediated immunosuppression. Dysregulation of mucosal immunology leading to an abnormal interaction with commensal bacteria is suggested to play a key role in the pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in men and dogs. The aim of this study was to characterise the expression of Foxp3 in the normal canine gut of 18 dogs (mean age: 6.03 years), in 16 dogs suffering from IBD (mean age: 5.05 years), and of 6 dogs with intestinal nematode infection (mean age: 0.87 years) using immunohistochemistry. In the duodenum, Tregs in healthy dogs declined from villi (median: 10.67/62 500 μm2) to crypts (median: 1.89/62 500 μm2). Tregs were further increased in the villi of middle-aged dogs (median: 18.92/62 500 μm2) in contrast to juvenile (median: 3.50/62 500 μm2) and old (median: 9.56/62 500 μm2) individuals. Compared to healthy controls, animals suffering from IBD revealed reduced numbers of Tregs in duodenal villi (median: 4.13/62 500 μm2). Dogs with intestinal nematode infection displayed increased numbers of Tregs (median: 21.06/62 500 μm2) compared to healthy animals.Age-related changes indicate a progressive establishment of oral tolerance and immunosenescence in the canine elderly. The results further suggest that a defect in Treg homeostasis may be involved in the pathogenesis of canine IBD. In contrast, increased numbers of Tregs in the duodenum may be due to nematode infection.  相似文献

Anaplasma (A.) phagocytophilum is a tick-transmitted obligate intracellular bacterium and has been identified in a wide range of mammalian species, causing febrile disease in some. Few reports show that it can also cause granulocytic anaplasmosis in cats. As data on the occurrence of A. phagocytophilum in cats from Germany is limited, a total of 326 serum and 306 EDTA-blood samples from cats from Germany were screened by direct (Giemsa-stained blood/buffy coat smears, real-time PCR) and indirect (IFAT) methods. Of 274 Giemsa-stained blood smears which could be evaluated none was positive for morulae, but one blood sample (< or =0.1%; 1/306) was positive for A. < or = phagocytophilum-DNA in PCR. Antibodies (cutoff > or = 1:64) were detected in 53 out of 326 samples (16.2%). Altogether, the results show a high seroprevalence rate of anti-A. phagocytophilum antibodies in cats in Germany while the low detection rate of this bacterial agent by direct methods is similar to those of other studies on A. phagocytophilum infections in cats.  相似文献
