This study examined the frequency of infection by an unidentified pathogenic fungus of oak logs bored into by males alone
or by both males and females ofPlatypus quercivorus (Murayama) in the field. The fungus, which is associated with mass mortality of oak trees in Japan, was not isolated from
logs bored into by males alone, which bored only short entrance galleries. However, it was isolated from logs bored into by
both males and females, which together bored longer galleries and reproduced successfully. This suggests that it is difficult
for the fungus to colonize logs bored into by males alone. The fungus was not isolated from a log in which the beetles failed
to reproduce, and in which the galleries were significantly shorter than in logs where reproduction succeeded, but it was
unclear whether the shortness of the galleries prevented colonization of the log by the fungus. The study also revealed that
some gallery-initiating males survived for at least 2 months in the absence of females, and that females elongated entrance

We intensively surveyed the concentrations of chemical species in aerosols and gases using a four-stage filter-pack method at a site in Japan facing the Sea of Japan in winter with 6-h sample intervals. A few chloride species emitted anthropogenically were detected, and the HCl (g) concentration was quite low. The number of chloride species artifacts was also low. The HNO3 (g) concentration was significantly higher when the monitored air mass passed over the Korean Peninsula compared to when it did not pass over the Korean Peninsula. In addition, the HNO3 (g) concentration was significantly higher when the air mass arrived at the monitoring site by passing the route at lower latitude than the latitude of the monitoring site. On the other hand, the SO2 (g) concentration showed no change between various trajectories of the air mass. The $ {\text{NH}}^{ + }_{4} $ (p)/non-seasalt- (nss-) $ {\text{SO}}^{{2 - }}_{4} $ (p) ratio was intermediate between the compositions of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4HSO4 when the air mass passed over the Korean Peninsula, whereas it was intermediate between NH4HSO4 and H2SO4 when the air mass did not pass over the Korean Peninsula. Frustrated magnetic materials, in which local conditions for energy minimization are incompatible because of the lattice structure, can remain disordered to the lowest temperatures. Such is the case for Ba(3)CuSb(2)O(9), which is magnetically anisotropic at the atomic scale but curiously isotropic on mesoscopic length and time scales. We find that the frustration of Wannier's Ising model on the triangular lattice is imprinted in a nanostructured honeycomb lattice of Cu(2+) ions that resists a coherent static Jahn-Teller distortion. The resulting two-dimensional random-bond spin-1/2 system on the honeycomb lattice has a broad spectrum of spin-dimer-like excitations and low-energy spin degrees of freedom that retain overall hexagonal symmetry. 相似文献

On-farm vaccination of chickens against Campylobacter jejuni is considered a potentially effective countermeasure to decrease campylobacteriosis via consumption of contaminated chicken meat, but is not yet available. In this study, 2 groups of Jidori chicks were immunized subcutaneously with a formalin-killed C. jejuni with 2 different adjuvants. Other chicks served as the unvaccinated control group. Both vaccines induced high levels of anti-Campylobacter IgG but did not decrease bacterial excretion in cecal droppings and bacterial load in the liver and spleen after oral challenge with 10(5) CFU of the homologous strain. Further study is needed to address the observed irrelevance and to develop a novel effective vaccine against C. jejuni. 相似文献

We have reviewed the effects of long-term climatic/oceanic conditions on the growth, survival, production dynamics, and distribution of Hokkaido chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta in Japan during the period 1945–2005 using path analysis, back-calculation, and scale analyses, and applied a prediction method based on the SRES-A1B scenario of the intergovernmental panel on climate change. The populations of Hokkaido chum salmon were found to have had high growth rates at age 1 year since the late 1980s. Path analysis indicated that the growth at age 1 year in the Okhotsk Sea was directly affected by warm sea surface temperature associated with global warming, with the increased growth at age 1 year resulting in higher rates of survival and large population sizes. Predictions on the global warming effects on the chum salmon were (1) decreased carrying capacity and distribution area, (2) occurrence of a strong density-dependent effect, and (3) loss of migration route to the Sea of Okhotsk, especially for Hokkaido chum salmon. We have also outlined the future challenges of establishing a sustainable conservation management scheme for salmon that include adaptive management and precautionary principles, as well as conservation of natural spawning populations and recovery of natural river ecosystems in Japan despite the warming climate. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Of the free, conjugated and bound forms of polyamines, the free form of spermidine was the most abundant polyamine in Heterosigma akashiwo throughout the growth period except for the lag phase. Free spermidine content increased remarkably during the exponential growth phase and increased as the growth rate increased. The maximum growth yield of H. akashiwo was reduced by the addition of methylglyoxal bis-guanylhydrazone (MGBG) and the reduced growth yield could be counteracted by the addition of spermidine to the medium. It is concluded that spermidine plays a significant role in the growth of H. akashiwo . These results are similar to those obtained in Chattonella antiqua that belongs to same taxonomic Class as H. akashiwo . 相似文献

The aim in this study is to elucidate the laterality of chicken spinocerebellar (SC) neurons that originate from the caudal cervical to caudal lumbosacral spinal cord. SC neurons in the spinal segment (SS) 17-20 consisted of a mixture of crossed and uncrossed axons. SC neurons in the more cranial and caudal SS than SS 17-20 (transitional zone) were generally uncrossed and crossed, respectively. In the transitional zone, SC neurons in spinal border cells and ventral border cells of the ventral horn changed dramatically from an uncrossed to a crossed type between SS 17 and SS 18. Chicken SC neurons are markedly different in laterality from mammalian SC neurons. 相似文献

The goal of this study was to localize antigen presenting cells (APC), which may play roles in defense against pathogens and fertility, and examine the effects of age and gonadal steroids on their population in the rooster epididymis. Healthy White Leghorn male birds (immature 60-day-old birds; matured 150-, 330-, and 550-day-old), and immature birds treated with testosterone propionate (TP) or estradiol benzoate (EB) for 3 or 6 days were used. Cryostat sections of the epididymis and ductus deference were immunostained for Ia to identify APC. RT-PCR was performed to confirm the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC class II) mRNA in the epididymis. Ia+ cells were localized in the surface epithelium and subepithelial layer of the ductules and occasionally in the luminal content of the epididymis and ductus deference. RT-PCR analysis confirmed expression of MHC class II mRNA in the epididymis, ductus deferens, testis, and spleen. The frequency of Ia+ cells in the subepithelial layer was significantly greater in the proximal efferent ductules than in the other two types of ductules in the epididymis of 550-day-old birds. Although there were no significant differences in the frequencies in the subepithelial layer of the proximal efferent ductules between 60- and 150-day-old birds, the frequencies were significantly greater in 330- and 550-day-old birds than in 60-day-old birds. The frequencies of Ia+ cells in the ductus deferences was increased in the 150-day-old birds compared with the 60-day-old birds, with a larger increase in 330- and 550-day-old birds. The Ia+ cell frequency was significantly increased by EB-injection, but not by TP-injection, on Days 3 and 6 of injection compared with Day 0. These results suggest that the population of APC in the epididymis increases with age after sexual maturation, and estrogen may be one of the factors involved in induction of Ia+ cells. 相似文献

We studied the biology of the ambrosia beetle Platypus quercivorus in the logs of five tree species to determine: (1) the relationship between the amount of frass produced by beetles and tunnel
length, (2) the relationship between frass shape and the morphological characteristics of P. quercivorus mouthparts, and (3) the suitability of five tree species for P. quercivorus reproduction. Five logs each from healthy Quercus crispula, Q. serrata, Castanea crenata, Sorbus japonica, and Cryptomeria japonica trees were used in this experiment. The results showed that there was a linear relationship between the amount of frass and
tunnel length. Whenever powdery frass was produced, larvae were found in the gallery in the log, while fibrous frass was present
only in galleries that contained just adults. The mouthparts of adults were completely sclerotized, which likely accounts
for the fibrous frass production. Host preference of P. quercivorus was examined at two stages using five tree species. The first stage is digging initiation, which concerns male preference
for digging a tunnel. More holes were made by males on S. japonica and Q. serrata logs, while fewer holes were made on C. japonica logs. The second stage is characterized by female orientation, mating, and progeny development. Platypus quercivorus could complete its lifecycle only in the two Quercus spp. 相似文献

Some of the highest genetic merit sires have been shown to harbour recessive mutations affecting fertility, which may spread rapidly in the population through AI. These disorders may result in abortion and decline in pregnancy per insemination in cows. This study was carried out on 240 Holstein‐Friesian cows and 15 mummified foetuses. Blood and tissue samples were collected from the cows and mummified foetuses, respectively, for DNA extraction. Allele‐specific PCR was designed for the detection of the cows and foetuses carrying the nonsense mutation (C/T) in apoptosis peptide activating factor 1 gene (APAF1). The mutant allele frequency of the APAF1 in carrier cows and mummified foetuses was calculated. Milk samples were taken from the carrier and non‐carrier cows for progesterone assay. The allele‐specific PCR reaction efficiently distinguished the C/T mutation in APAF1. Of 240 cows, seven cows (2.9%) were diagnosed to carry one copy of the mutant allele of APAF1. However, the carrier frequency was 33.3% in mummified foetuses (five of 15). The mutant allele frequency was 0.02 and 0.17 in the cows and mummified foetuses, respectively. Concentrations of progesterone did not differ between cows with APAF1 mutation and non‐carrier cows during 45 days post‐insemination. This study provided allele‐specific PCR for the detection of APAF1 mutation in cows. Moreover, it reports the carrier and mutant allele frequencies of APAF1 in dairy cows and mummified foetuses in Japan. 相似文献
