The primary objective of this research was to determine the effect of supplemental dietary silicon (Si) on plasma and milk Si concentrations of lactating mares and the subsequent effect on plasma Si concentrations in nursing foals. Additionally, the role of Si on altering biochemical markers of bone turnover was investigated, because supplemental Si may be advantageous in enhancing bone health. Twelve Arabian mare/foal units were pair-matched by foaling date and randomly assigned to two groups, Si-supplemented (Supplemented) or control (Control). Blood and milk samples were taken on d 0, 15, 30, and 45, d 0 being the 1st d after parturition. Plasma and milk (or colostrum) Si concentrations were determined and serum was analyzed for osteocalcin, carboxy-terminal pyridinoline cross-linked telopeptide region of type I collagen, and pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline crosslinks. All Supplemented mares had higher (P < 0.01) plasma Si concentrations than Control by d 30, and Supplemented mares' milk had higher (P < 0.01) Si concentrations on d 45 than Control mares' milk. By d 45, foals of Supplemented mares had higher (P < 0.01) plasma Si concentrations than foals of Control mares. Supplemental Si did not influence (P > 0.36) bone metabolism in foals; however, trends (P < 0.10) for altered bone metabolism were observed in postpartum mares. Results indicate that supplemental Si increases plasma and milk Si concentrations. Further research is required to determine whether Si has a role in altering serum biochemical markers of bone and collagen activity.  相似文献

We examined whether pork with suspected content of Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 (DT104) could be used for production of dry-cured sausages without jeopardizing consumer safety. The results of the risk assessment showed, that if Salmonella is present in raw pork, it is usually in low numbers. Additionally, during processing, an eventual presence of Salmonella will be reduced with at least two log units. The simulations showed that only 1-2 DT104 would be present in dry-cured sausages made by Danish pork, and this extremely seldom. Likewise, up to 4 DT104 would be present in dry-cured sausages made by foreign pork. It is not clear whether these low numbers of DT104 are capable of producing disease at all. However, if higher numbers are present, disease might occur. Therefore, we set up a monitoring and managing program, including a list with demands to processing in order to achieve minimum two-log reduction of any DT104 bacteria. The suggested scheme implies a far better and more systematic monitoring than the current system, ensuring the consumer a higher degree of food safety.  相似文献

The effects of individual SNP and the variation explained by sets of SNP associated with DMI, metabolic midtest BW, BW gain, and feed efficiency, expressed as phenotypic and genetic residual feed intake, were estimated from BW and the individual feed intake of 1,159 steers on dry lot offered a 3.0 Mcal/kg ration for at least 119 d before slaughter. Parents of these F(1) × F(1) (F(1)(2)) steers were AI-sired F(1) progeny of Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Red Angus, and Simmental bulls mated to US Meat Animal Research Center Angus, Hereford, and MARC III composite females. Steers were genotyped with the BovineSNP50 BeadChip assay (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA). Effects of 44,163 SNP having minor allele frequencies >0.05 in the F(1)(2) generation were estimated with a mixed model that included genotype, breed composition, heterosis, age of dam, and slaughter date contemporary groups as fixed effects, and a random additive genetic effect with recorded pedigree relationships among animals. Variance in this population attributable to sets of SNP was estimated with models that partitioned the additive genetic effect into a polygenic component attributable to pedigree relationships and a genotypic component attributable to genotypic relationships. The sets of SNP evaluated were the full set of 44,163 SNP and subsets containing 6 to 40,000 SNP selected according to association with phenotype. Ninety SNP were strongly associated (P < 0.0001) with at least 1 efficiency or component trait; these 90 accounted for 28 to 46% of the total additive genetic variance of each trait. Trait-specific sets containing 96 SNP having the strongest associations with each trait explained 50 to 87% of additive variance for that trait. Expected accuracy of steer breeding values predicted with pedigree and genotypic relationships exceeded the accuracy of their sires predicted without genotypic information, although gains in accuracy were not sufficient to encourage that performance testing be replaced by genotyping and genomic evaluations.  相似文献

Adult female mink were fed rations containing 1.1, 1.8, 4.8, 8.3 and 15.0 ppm mercury as methyl mercury chloride over a 93 day period. Histopathological evidence of injury was present in all groups. Mink fed rations containing 1.8 to 15.0 ppm mercury developed clinical intoxication within the experimental period. The rapidity of onset of clinical intoxication was directly related to the mercury content of the ration. Mercury concentration in tissue of mink which died were similar, despite differences in mercury content of the diets and time of death. The average mercury concentration in the brain of mink which died was 11.9 ppm. The lesions of methyl mercury poisoning are described and criteria for diagnosis are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the lipoarabinomannan antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (LAM-ELISA), carbohydrate antigen complement fixation (CH-CFT), and protein D antigen agar gel immunodiffusion (D-AGID) tests for bovine paratuberculosis, relative to histopathology, and to culture and isolation of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis from tissues and feces. Samples for test evaluation were collected from four sources including blood and tissues from 400 cull cows at three abattoirs in Ontario, blood and feces from a paratuberculosis survey of cattle from 120 dairy farms in Ontario, a serum bank containing samples from cattle from Ontario and Québec, and a bank of sera from cattle from Pennsylvania and the northeastern United States. The data were analyzed using receiver operator characteristic curves, estimates of relative sensitivity and specificity, and kappa statistics of agreement between tests. The LAM-ELISA performed significantly better than both the CH-CFT and the D-AGID tests. The LAM-ELISA was better at predicting fecal shedding status than tissue infection. However, the LAM-ELISA also had limitations. When interpreted as positive or negative (+/-), at a critical optical density of 0.675, its sensitivity and specificity relative to bacteriology were 49% and 87% respectively. Although the serological tests examined in this study provided some information, they did not predict well the infection status of individual animals.  相似文献

The Concerted Action on potato late blight ‘Eucablight’ ( http://www.eucablight.org ) was launched in 2003 to promote collaboration between researchers across Europe and to collate the previously fragmented data on host resistance to late blight and characterization of populations of its causal agent, Phytophthora infestans. Fundamental to the project was the development of standardized protocols, databases and data collection tools with which data from across Europe could be centralized. The ultimate aim was to capitalize on the vast resource of data available in order to allow a pan‐European analysis to be conducted. The P. infestans database is currently populated with information relating to over 15 000 isolates from 20 European countries. The host resistance database holds primary disease data, and derived statistics, from more than 50 field trials assessing mainly foliage blight resistance. The use of five standard cultivars in these trials facilitated the comparison of resistance information across years and regions. The host database is structured, and made accessible, in such a way that DSS builders can access the model parameters they need to construct locally adapted forecasting systems. In this presentation we describe the database and the data analysis tools that have been developed in this project and how they are directly applicable to other host‐pathogen systems.  相似文献

Summary

Rooting and growth responses of miniature rose cuttings were investigated in an experiment in which four propagation temperatures, two photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) with five auxin (IBA) concentrations, cutting sizes and cutting positions, were combined factorially in a response-surface design. Most prominently, temperature, cutting size and auxin and their interactions, influenced root and shoot growth. A propagation temperature of 24.6°C, and IBA concentrations between 10–3 and 10–1M, depending on temperature, were optimal for root formation. Root formation in extra short cuttings was delayed at low IBA concentrations. Regarding root formation, IBA could substitute for increased temperature as well as for increased cutting size. Onset of axillary bud growth was fastest at 24.6°C, and delayed in extra short cuttings. Application of IBA at 10–4 to 10–3M was optimal for axillary bud growth. By increasing the IBA concentration both time to flowering and plant height increased at 24.6°C. In cuttings from higher positions on stock plants, axillary shoots enhanced their growth to flowering, became shorter, and weighed less, suggesting occurrence of positional effects (topophysis). The growth rate increased with increasing IBA concentration, as well as from medial to low positioned cuttings. Increasing propagation PPFD from 46 to 72 µmol m–2s–1 did not affect the parameters. Time to axillary bud growth and time to first flower were related to time-to-visible root. Fast formation of roots apparently resulted in fast axillary bud growth. In time-to-visible root and axillary bud growth, the smallest variation between plants was found at optimal ranges for temperature, IBA concentration and cutting size, and further factors optimal for root formation and axillary bud growth provided the most synchronized plant development.  相似文献
